Finding the Throughline with Kate Hanley

Finding the Throughline: Conversations about the Creative Process invites you into the minds of writers and other creatives as they open up about their process, their doubts, and what kinds of changes they’re thinking about making. The questions are mildly invasive, honestly, and the answers are unvarnished…and so refreshing!
Whether your creative work is writing, painting, making music, parenting, or simply living, Finding the Throughline can help you get—and stay—inspired. Invigorated, even.
For detailed show notes on each interview, visit katehanley.substack.com. And if you’d like to hear these interviews in one ad-free episode (as opposed to broken up into three shorter episodes with a few ads sprinkled in to keep the lights on), become a paid subscriber once you’re there.

Continuing on this week’s theme of comfort (I’m replaying episodes this as I’m dealing with the aftermath of appendicitis) I’m re-sharing this episode from 2021 where I talk about why we feel so badly about money decisions we wished we’d done differently, and share an exercise to help you process some of that angst and get some good money energy flowing again.

[Comfort Podcasts]: The Surprisingly Deep Reason Why Feeling Cozy Matters , Ep. 896 Feb 27, 2023
    Show notes

Hi! So… I ended up having my appendix out just as my podcast episodes were due. Which is why I’m replaying episodes this week–and in honor of what I’m needing in my life right now, they are the episodes that bring me, and hopefully you, the most comfort.

Today’s episode takes a deep dive in to coziness, and why, surprisingly, it is a biological imperative that makes all kinds of wonderful, important things possible. Like, feeling safe. And healing. And dreaming. So get ready to feel better about getting cozy AF!!

(And in other news, by now my surgery was over a week ago and I should be laughing, coughing, and sitting up like a champ.)

[Things to Stop Doing]: 3 Tricks to Stop Blowing off Your Self-Care, Ep. 895 Feb 24, 2023
    Show notes

Today’s thing to stop doing, is blowing off your self-care, whatever that may be–going to bed at a decent time, getting some movement during the day, or calling your friend and having a mutual venting session.

I can just hear you thinking, Kate, you say this week is about doing less but it sounds like today you’re telling me to do more.

But really this is about stopping resisting your inspirations around taking better care of yourself. Which frees up a whole bunch of energy–energy you can put into doing those things that make you feel like a better version of yourself.

[Things to Stop Doing]: Why Venting Is Better Than Complaining, Ep. 894 Feb 22, 2023
    Show notes

Today’s thing to do less of is complaining. Complaining is a real slippery slope, because even though it feels constructive–because you’re airing your feelings–it tends to only make things worse because it causes you to really focus on what’s going wrong, and what we pay attention to only gets bigger. Like the tiny little pimple on your nose that you poke at and pick at and it turns in to a big angry red bump.

Which is not to say that you need to be a saint, or a martyr, and find a way to not be bothered by anything ever again.

This is where venting comes in. Let’s break down the difference.

[Things to Stop Doing]: 3 Ways to Stop Taking Things Personally, Ep. 893 Feb 20, 2023
    Show notes

This week is all about things you can stop doing. Because sometimes being a better person isn’t only about the doing, you know? Sometimes it’s about doing less.

The first thing you can stop doing is taking things personally. Which just makes whatever has happened about you, when really, everything someone else says or does is about them.

So if you’re not going to take it personally, and make it about you, how are you going to take it??

Positive psychology talks a lot about lenses–or tools that you can use to color how you see the world. If you’re going to put down the “this is about me” lens, here are three others that you can try on to help you shift out of that personal upset.

[Mood-Lifters]: When Your Day Goes Sideways, Ep. 892 Feb 17, 2023
    Show notes

We all know that sometimes, something happens to hijack your day–and your mood. (It happened to me the day before I wrote this episode; I share the details of how my afternoon got hijacked by a call from my son’s vice principal.). Today I’m sharing a three step approach that spells out ARC, which is apt, because these three steps are like a rainbow bridge that can take you from upset to stable.

    [Mood-Lifters]: Build a Mood-Friendly Routine, Ep. 891 Feb 15, 2023
    Show notes

Setting up a routine can help keep your mood in a good place, as opposed to waking up and just starting to react to whatever presents itself, which leaves you feeling pulled in a million different directions, frazzled, and probably low mood. In this episode I share the different ways to think about what to put in that daily routine so that you know you’re taking good care of yourself and your responsibilities–and that helps your mood stay steady.

[De-cluttering]: What to Do With Unwanted Gifts, Ep. 889 Feb 10, 2023
    Show notes

So far this week we’ve talked about letting go of the things that belong to the person you used to be and how to make space for the person you actually are now. Today’s episode is a bit of a stickier wicket--and that is what to do about things that you don’t use, don’t need, but you feel like you can’t get rid of them because you received them as a gift or they have a very high sentimental value.

    [De-cluttering]: The Power of 5-Minute Routines to Get–and Stay–Organized, Ep. 888 Feb 08, 2023
    Show notes

De-cluttering and creating a more functional, more serene space isn’t a one and done deal. I cleaned out our refrigerator and freezer last week and while I’ve been loving the pristine-ness of those shelves and drawers, one trip to the grocery store and it’s looking kind of jumbled and there are some leftovers that are already starting to get pushed to the way back. No, decluttering is an ongoing thing–but one that you can make a quick and simple routine. That’s what this episode is all about.

Today I’m replaying an interview from April, 2021 with Katie McCan–an award-winning professional organizer from Westchester County, New York, who’s sharing quick and simple routines that will help us keep our homes streamlined, serene, and ready to support us in whatever we want to do in our daily life.
