Fantastic Plastic – Adrian Griffiths, CEO of Recycling Technologies – From Oil to Plastic and Back Again, a Journey to Purer Recycling for a Cleaner Planet Jun 14, 2018
    Show notes

We use approximately 322 million tons of plastic per year, a staggering number. Plastics are polluting our oceans, being ingested by aquatic life, and filling up landfills with no end in sight. Adrian Griffiths, CEO of Recycling Technologies, will explain how plastic is not the enemy we may think it to be though, as long as we continue to advance toward recycling plastics back to their near original form. From bags to bottles, and everything else, technological advances in chemical recycling are providing methods to convert these plastics back into oil, which is then distributed to petrochemical companies that utilize it to make more plastic. While plastic is incredibly efficient for a myriad of practical uses, and actually has a good carbon footprint in that it saves an enormous amount of carbon, the disposal of it has become a problem we can no longer ignore. The good news is that most plastics are highly recyclable as long as they can be separated into homogeneous polymer and color types. We'll look at the current state of recycling in terms of how much plastic is getting landfilled versus recycled and consider the benefits of 'down recycling' and other regenerative forms. The recycling CEO will explain thermal cracking, the process of fracturing long molecules into many shorter molecules. And we'll get insider knowledge about Recycling Technologies' 'refinery type' recycling machines capable of processing up to 7,000 tons of plastic waste per year. Adrian Griffiths will also discuss some of the foibles inherent in the recycling process, such as the need to filter out heavy metals, fluorine, chlorine, and others. Discover how Griffiths' recycling solution can be mass-produced and shipped to recycling centers anywhere in the world. The innovative CEO will delve into underlying issues and explain how this technology will change the way the world views plastic, as once discarded plastic will now have value and can be recycled for money. Thus recycling technology is the critical piece of the puzzle that will allow us to continue to enjoy the benefits of plastic, without the agonizing worry about the downside of its waste.

Are You Going to Eat That? Mark Gale, CEO, Charleston/Orwig — How Food Tech Companies are Racing to Deliver Plant-Based & Clean Meats to Your Dining Table Jun 13, 2018
    Show notes

Many Americans love a good burger. For some it's a summertime staple. Fire up the grill; grab the cheese, tomatoes, and mayo and get set for a truly all-American meal. But as food technology is perhaps just years away from potentially altering the American diet the question remains… are you going to eat that? Jump on board a fascinating discussion with Mark Gale, CEO of Charleston|Orwig, a strategic marketing and communications firm, as he explains how lab-grown meats and plant-based proteins may soon be what's for dinner. The marketing CEO will give us a peek behind the curtain into food labs that are racing to develop affordable protein alternatives that could put a dent in the traditional meat industry with healthier, environmentally-friendly products. Mark Gale will outline current problems facing food tech companies such as cost and taste/experience. Currently, the lab process for developing protein alternatives requires serum from animal blood, which is expensive and has made delivery of products to the marketplace difficult. But beyond cost, the eating experience is what may make or break lab-grown meat alternative products. We'll get an in-depth analysis of the kinds of cells that are easily produced, such as muscle cells, versus the combination of cells that typically make up meats that people enjoy. As purely plant-based products are making their way into popular restaurants such as TGI Fridays, White Castle, and more, food tech companies see an open door. They're banking their hopes upon a myriad of studies that show younger generations, such as Gen Xers and Millennials, are interested in adding non-meat products to their diet. And for the first time in history, younger generations are spending more food dollars eating out than in the grocery store, which could bode well for technology-based food companies.

Planet Impact – Ian Carnelli, Programme Manager at European Space Agency (ESA) – An Inch is Bigger Than You Think: How Scientific Research Prepares us for Potential Catastrophic Asteroid Impact Jun 13, 2018
    Show notes

The big asteroid is careening towards Earth and NASA is scrambling for a solution to save the planet, along with the help of a few of Hollywood's biggest actors, we've all seen the movie. But truth is sometimes stranger than fiction as the European Space Agency in conjunction with NASA is working now to ensure that this scenario never becomes a reality. Ian Carnelli, Programme Manager at the European Space Agency (ESA) discusses the current research and the Asteroid Impact Mission. Asteroid deflection in regard to planetary defense is, as you'd imagine, a complex area of study; however, it is crucial research considering the fact that an asteroid's impact on Earth could be up to a thousand times the Hiroshima bomb. ESA's manager provides a detailed overview of the study of asteroid impact that takes into account speed and asteroid composition. And we'll learn the importance of an inch, as Ian Carnelli explains how a small push of an asteroid that deviates its velocity as little as a quarter of an inch per second can change its orbit in a significant way. Listen in as Mr. Carnelli expounds upon the reasons why collecting real space data; impacting asteroid moons; along with studying craters, their shape, depth and size is important to calibrate models to simulate impacts. And he'll discuss the Rosetta mission and its contact with Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, and how it supplied important data to further research into the flight of a spacecraft near low-gravity environments.

Nersi Nazari – CEO of Vitalconnect – Improving Treatment Through Biosensors Jun 13, 2018
    Show notes

Technological advances have made life easier, that's for sure. Information and data is now accessible right at our fingertips via smartphones and tablets, but how can technology offer an opportunity to improve our health and keep us safe? Nersi Nazari, CEO of VitalConnect gives us an in-depth look at how advances in health technology are making patients' lives safer, and easier, through FDA approved, prescription monitoring devices. Biosensors deliver real-time monitoring of a patient's most critical vitals such as heart rate, breathing rate, electrocardiogram, and temperature, as well as fall detection, patient motion, and posture. Advances in chip technology and miniaturization of mechanics have revolutionized patient monitoring devices making them not only more efficient and accurate, but also small and discreet. Gone are the days of bulky, embarrassing monitoring products that scream to the world that you're a patient; privacy is now a patient's privilege! Through this informative discussion we'll discover how data can be interpreted in aggregate to track a patient's direction toward recovery and allow doctors to make more informed decisions on treatment. Additionally, we'll take a look at how AI and predictive learning technology can be applied to health monitoring to improve patient progress, and foresee potentially catastrophic medical events. Nersi Nazari also provides an overview on new advances that will allow for a patient's data to be digitally input directly into their medical files, thus reducing the potential for human error, and providing immediate doctor access to their crucial health data.
