    Show notes

Bankorus is the first AI-powered, crypto-wealth management platform and security token marketplace built on the blockchain. Their mission is to unlock the more than $60,000,000,000,000 USD ($60T) in traditional assets held by high net worth individuals (or HNWIs) and move it into crypto. HNWI now only hold less than one-hundredth of a percent of their wealth in crypto. Powered by AI and built on the blockchain, Bankorus provides HNWIs with a full suite of safe, KYC-compliant solutions for accessing crypto. Turn traditional or illiquid assets — real estate, farmland, art, chateau, VC/PE, hedge fund, bonds, etc — into liquid digital assets through tokenization. Buy and sell digital assets on our security token marketplace. Even borrow crypto against existing assets. Bankorus is a transformational opportunity to present a lucrative new asset class — cryptocurrency — to a historically aggressive, early-adopter investor, the HNWI.

Future Imperfect – Teddy Ort, Graduate Student, MIT Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) – Self-DrivingCars: Are We There Yet? Jun 20, 2018
    Show notes

Globally, there are approximately 3000 motor vehicle deaths per day, 90% of which are due to human error such as distracted driving or impaired driving (drugs, alcohol, sleep deprivation). With statistics like these, it's no wonder that auto manufacturers are in a race against time, and each other, to develop self-driving cars that will meet the challenges of all driving conditions. Teddy Ort, a researcher and graduate student at MIT's Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) a part of the Distributed Robotics Laboratory provides an interesting look at the future of self-driving vehicles. The MIT researcher discusses his research program's goal of developing the algorithm and artificial intelligence (AI) necessary to enable a car to avoid all motor vehicle accidents. We'll learn why self-driving cars are not available to the public quite yet. While AI may be perfectly successful within a well-established grid such as a city, it may not score as well in rural areas that are not as delineated through mapping technology. Mr. Ort provides an overview of some of the technical issues that must be overcome before self-driving vehicles rule the roads. Though it may seem sensible that these cars simply do the driving when the tech is able, then hand over the control to a human when needed, data suggests this 'passing of the reigns' is a sticky problem indeed. The MIT researcher gives an overview of the impediments to rural driving for these self-drivers, and how laser-scanning technology will provide the data necessary to read roads in much the same way a human would. And with unmarked roads comprising approximately 60% of all roads in the US, it's easy to see why camera and laser scanning technology will have to rise to the challenges of rural driving. Further, AI based technology will still have a learning curve when it comes to weather and reflective surfaces, for as a human can easily decipher that a car's image seen in a rainy road reflection is not real, AI must learn this skill. Though challenges certainly lie ahead, Teddy Ort informs us that these self-driving cars are on their way to our garages, but exactly when that day will be remains unknown.

Vic Merjanian- Titan Health & Security Technology- Augmented Reality Saving Lives Jun 20, 2018
    Show notes

Titan Health & Security Technology is connecting people who need help with the people nearest to them who can provide it. As a result, people are receiving emergency assistance quicker and without the delays and rerouted phone calls associated with dialing "911." The Titan app allows users to receive help at the touch of a button by grabbing a user's location and sending their data to all administrators, law enforcement agencies, and other emergency responders in their area. The Titan app has successfully reduced emergency response time by 50% and has already been utilized over 62 million times over the past year and a half. In addition, the Titan app has an augmented reality feature that allows response teams to locate people who are sending emergency alerts, which has been life saving in the case of fires and floods where people are trapped and unable to escape. But that's not all: the Titan app utilizes mesh networking so that device-to-device communication can continue in the absence of a network or Wi-Fi connection. With the ability to translate content in real time, the app is also breaking down language barriers that slow emergency response time. "It's really about showing people how they can connect with other people to reduce response time and get help when they need it, because in this day and age, it's no longer a question of if you need help, it's when you're going to need help," says VicMerjanian, CEO of Titan. The app is currently designed for organizations in the education, government, and private sectors, but will become available for individuals in the near future. Lighting the Way – Nicolas C. Pégard, PhD, University of California, Berkeley – How Neuroscientists Are Using Light to Understand the Brain and Neural Circuit Dysfunction Jun 20, 2018
    Show notes

Nicolas C. Pégard, Ph.D., a University of California, Berkeley neuroscientist will provide an illuminating overview of his work to develop optical systems that are designed to help neuroscientists solve problems. Of particular interest to Berkley, neuroscientist is a method known as optogenetics. Optogenetics is a process that uses light to modify molecular events in a specific manner, in living cells and organisms, which enables researchers to connect computers to the brain and focus on specific neurons. Essentially, the cell's genetic toolbox is used to create proteins that are not naturally present within the brain, a true combination process combining optics and genetics. The Berkeley researcher will detail how his team uses holograms to create artificial patterns of neural activity that can mimic what the brain is doing when it is experiencing a thought or engaging in an action. This allows researchers to put the brain into a state that replicates what would happen if the brain had actually experienced a sensory stimulus. Pégard gives us a glimpse into the future of these techniques of neuroscience, some of which sound like they could be pulled straight from a big budget science fiction Hollywood movie plot. Case in point, this neural activity method could actually trick the brain into believing something has occurred that did not, or even place new ideas into the brain. The discussion will detail how observation of the brain in a diseased state could lead to monumental advances in drug therapy for brain diseases, which may enable the development of higher efficacy drugs with minimal or no side effects. Further research could facilitate groundbreaking achievements in prosthetics, for if there can be communication with the brain that involves multiple thousands of neurons, prostheses could become higher functioning. Nicolas C. Pégard and neuroscience researchers foresee changes that could literally alter the course for human health and brain function, but for now, his team is taking it to step by step.

Dr. Suzanne Saffie-Siebert, CEO & Founder of Good Science Beauty – How Technology is Pushing Beauty and Skincare Products to a Higher Level of Effectiveness Jun 14, 2018
    Show notes

Skin, many of us don't give it much thought, but just like the heart and lungs, skin is an important organ too. In fact, our skin has seven layers of ectodermal tissue and it protects our underlying bones, and muscles, as well as all those important internalorgans. It's kind of a big deal, so maybe that's why the global skincare market is $100 billion dollars and rising. Come along for an interesting discussion on skin and technology, and what the future may bring, and what it already has! Dr. Saffie-Siebert, CEO & Founder of Good Science Beauty, a division of the biotech company, SiSaf, will breakdown how to get results with beauty products. And we'll learn why the method utilized for delivering active ingredients is even more important than the ingredients themselves. This is why technology plays a critical role in the success of active ingredient beauty products. Unlike regular application techniques, Good Science Beauty products can actually decrease toxicity as active ingredients are control-released and specific areas can be targeted. Dr. Saffie-Siebert's tech company delivers a handful of specialized, technology-backed, patented cosmetic products. She'll discuss silicon-based drug delivery built on elemental silicon, lipid, and amino acids that she and her team refer to as 'good silicon plus.' The technology-based application process is able to provide more successful results with similar base ingredients such assalicylic acid, etc. by delivering the active ingredients without drying out the skin, without compromising the skin. Thus, products can target blemishes without the negative residual effects produced by traditional cosmetic products. Dr. Saffie-Siebertwill also introduce a topic that might comes as a surprise to many—that sometimes 'organic' and 'natural' products are not as safe as synthetics. We'll gain insight into future developments in the application of hyaluronic acid for hydration, sunscreens for protection, as well compounds for skin brightening and rejuvenation. And the CEO scientist will discuss developing technology that may solve past problems of stability, solubility, and molecular size and thus open the door to impressive new products in the skincare industry.

Allison Berke- The Good Food Institute- From Factory-Farmed Animal Products to Clean Meat Alternatives Jun 14, 2018
    Show notes

Allison Berke is an academic advisor at The Good Food Institute, a non-profit organization working on the transition from factory-farmed animal products to plant-based and clean meat alternatives. By taking a small number of cells from an animal and applying biomedical methods in the lab, the science and tech team at The Good Food Institute is growing full meat products that are molecularly identical to animal meat, but in a way that is better for the environment and doesn't require the slaughter of animals. "Clean meat and plant-based meat are going to be better for the environment…better in terms of animal welfare, and also better in terms of global poverty and human health in that we can grow more calories on the same amount of land more efficiently and with fewer environmental inputs," says Berke. Tune in to hear the details, such as how to obtain the taste and texture of different types of meat, the challenges and constraints in terms of cost-effectiveness, and the growing interest in the plant-based and clean meat field–even by major factory-farm-based corporations such as Tyson.
