108 | Q&A: How Do I Do Estate Planning On A Budget? What About Trusts? Do I Need A Lawyer? Can I DIY it Myself? Can I Avoid Taxes? Jul 05, 2023
    Show notes

    Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

We're back for another Q&A episode all about estate planning and the desire to avoid probate and taxes.

    Key Points:

    • Thinking about this is great b/c you're forward thinking and preparing for the future.
    • Estate planning helps you avoiding burdening your children or loved ones with complex legal procedures.
    • Lawyers are necessary in some cases, while others can be handled with DIY resources.
    • Probate is the legal process that occurs after someone's death, involving asset distribution.
    • Waiting for probate to resolve can take months to years and may incur substantial costs.
    • Hiring a lawyer during probate usually involves paying a percentage of the total assets.
    • DIY resources can be suitable for simple wills and some real estate matters, but caution is advised.
    • Why we recommend hiring a lawyer in this instance.
    • A trust allows you to bypass probate entirely.
    • Establishing a trust requires upfront costs, typically around $4,000 to $5,000.
    • With a trust in place, assets can be transferred immediately without going through probate.
    • Any lawyer in the country can handle the trust's distribution without additional charges.
    • Not planning your estate properly can lead to financial messes and family stress.
    • Long probate periods can create conflicts among family members.
    • The cost of avoiding estate planning can far outweigh the initial investment.

Estate planning is a crucial step to protect your assets, minimize taxes, and avoid probate-related complications. While hiring an attorney can be expensive, DIY resources may not be sufficient for complex situations. It is essential to weigh the costs and benefits and make an informed decision based on your specific circumstances. By taking responsibility now, you can simplify the process and ensure a smoother transition for your loved ones in the future.

    • Why you should separate the emergency fund from everyday accounts to avoid using it for non-emergencies.
    • How one client used money from the emergency fund to buy sheep. Sheep are not an emergency.

    • How to access the emergency fund if it's in a different spot.
    • Why a money market account, which typically offers higher interest rates than regular savings accounts, is a great option for your emergency fund.
    • How to shop around for banks that offer high-yield savings accounts or money market accounts for their emergency fund.
    • How investments are different from the emergency fund.
    • How to make a good decision about using your emergency fund.

105 | Q&A: Student Loan Payments Are Back! We Just Got Our Budget To Where We Can Pay $400 Extra On Debt But Now There Will Be Nothing Left To Pay Off Debt. What Do We Do? Budgeting W/ No Wiggle Room Jun 28, 2023
    Show notes

    Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

We're back for another episode of Q&A! Today we're talking to a listener that had their budget ALL figured out and now the student loan payments are back and it's wrecking their budget! They had managed to save around three to $400 per month to put towards debt, but now their student loan payments are back, leaving them with no extra money at the end of the month! They're seeking advice on how to navigate this situation while juggling work and taking care of their kids.

Here are the basic tips & takeaways:

    • Revisit your expenses and take a closer look at your budget.
    • Determine the difference between needs and wants, and identify areas where you can cut back.
    • Revaluate your spending habits
    • Consider reducing entertainment subscriptions
    • Reevaluate your insurance plans & renegotiate your rates

    We also talk about:

    • What to do if you've already pared your budget down as much as possible.
    • How you may want to contact your creditors directly & how they'll be more willing to work with you if you chat with them BEFORE a default
    • How you can request deferred payments for a month or discuss the possibility of lowering payments or interest rates.

Finally, we also talked about the importance of teaching your children about personal finance. This situation can be an opportunity to discuss the negative impact of student loans and the value of saving for college from an early age. Having open conversations about finances and instilling good money habits can help them avoid financial struggles in the future.

104 | Q & A How To Plan For Unexpected Kids Expenses In The Budget + Managing Children's Expenses + Introducing the Kids' Savings Buckets Jun 26, 2023
    Show notes

    Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

In today's podcast, we are answering a question from a client about how to deal with expenses that come up as it relates to children.

We loved this mom's question & the realness of it:

What do you recommend to do when you have children, and you enter a phase where every day there is a new expense?

    • They grow out of shoes overnight and now require a purchase of $80 + shoes
    • Two days later your other son needs new cleats because the ones he has now have a hole in them and can't play soccer with his toes hanging out
    • Two weeks later the soccer team decides they are switching leagues and require a $300 deposit plus $150 for the uniform
    • And it just keeps going from there :)

We GET IT. Been there, done that, wasn't in the budget, sent kids to school with holes in their shoes, all of the above! We also know:

    • It's challenging to raise kids and budget at the same time, especially as the expense continues to climb
    • The expenses as it comes to kids can be unpredictable

We're telling you, again, about our concept of the kid's envelope and how it's going to save your life.

We're also explaining how to set up a sinking fund for your kids and how you can estimate the annual cost of your kids.

We also talked about how to set limits and say "no" when it's necessary.

    Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

It's SUMMER! We're talking all things summer including budgeting & planning for vacations, camps, activities, lunches and more. We'll cover:

    • Using the budget and calendar as tools to put the concepts into practice.
    • Determining what you can afford to spend on summer activities.
    • How to use sinking funds or separate budgets for summer activities and involve your kids in the process.
    • Teaching your kids about financial responsibility by having them contribute to paying for their summer camps or other activities.
    • Creating a system, such as envelopes or jars, to help your kids manage their money and learn budgeting skills. Also, encourage them to be involved in decision-making and prioritize activities based on their budget.
    • Planning your summer activities based on your budget and time availability, considering both monthly and weekly schedules.
    • Leaving gaps in your schedule and prioritize downtime.
    • Designing your ideal summer day and week, taking into account your kids' preferences and incorporating routines to maintain a sense of structure. Planning your summer on a macro level, considering the overall calendar and flow of weeks.
    • Discussing and creating ideal summer day schedules with your children, including both fun activities and chores.
    • Considering the time and effort it takes to keep your kids busy versus allowing them to have downtime and be creative.
    • Embracing boredom as it fosters creativity and encourages children to explore new activities and use their imagination.
    • Viewing summer as a season of rest and downtime, allowing you and your children to enjoy a slower pace before the busyness of other seasons.
