Book A Free Financial Coaching Call!

Hey there, lovely listeners! 👋 We've got an inspiring case study to share with you today about budgeting after divorce and the challenges of managing finances on a single income. Even if you haven't experienced divorce, this episode has valuable insights for anyone looking to improve their financial game.. Let's dive in! 🌊

💪 Our amazing client embarked on a seven-month coaching journey with us during her divorce. She was a single mom with three kids, juggling various debts, and living on a single income. Her story is a testament to what's possible when you take control of your finances.

📋 What did she accomplish? Let's break it down:

    • Income: $3,600 per month (on the conservative side)
    • Debt Paid Off: A whopping $17,000, including clearing all collections!
    • Minimum Monthly Payments: Reduced from $5,091 to $0
    • Savings: Skyrocketed from $1,000 to $24,000 🚀

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 She also involved her kids in the financial journey, teaching them about budgeting and the importance of saying "no" when necessary. It's a valuable life lesson that will serve them well.

📊 Organization and strategy were key. She took action, called collection agencies to negotiate early payoff amounts, checked her credit report monthly, and even used her tax return to tackle credit card debt. Remember, it's all about smart money moves!

🚗 Dealing with multiple cars and accounts tied to her ex-husband was a bit complicated, but she faced it head-on. She had to change the names on accounts and even sell a car to make her financial life more manageable.

💔 Closing the chapter with her ex was challenging but essential. It allowed her to gain closure and move forward, unburdened by financial ties to the past.

💡 The bottom line? Budgeting after divorce and managing a single income can be tough, but with the right plan and support, you can conquer it. Our client's journey is proof that financial freedom is within your reach.

    147 | Real-Life Budgeting: A Hands-On Guide to Creating a Zero-Based Budget Sep 29, 2023
    Show notes

    Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

Today, we're diving deep into the world of budgeting and answering a burning question: What is zero-based budgeting?

We received a great question from our Facebook group. Someone asked, "What is zero-based budgeting, and how do I do it?" This inspired us to break it down and make budgeting accessible to all.

📊 Setting the Stage with Our Budgeting Tool:

    - We use an amazing budget spreadsheet, and you can get it too (with a discount code) if you're interested.

    - It's designed to be user-friendly with clean fonts and clear sections.

💰 Step 1: Understanding Your Income:

    - Start by inputting your income, the money you're bringing in.

    - Every dollar is your soldier, and you're the commander.

🧾 Step 2: Debt Minimum Payments:

    - Now, let's tackle your debts.

    - Minimum payments are non-negotiable; you owe them.

    - Subtract your minimum debt payments from your total income.

    💡 Step 3: Budget Categories:

    - Next up are your bills and expenses.

    - These include essentials like utilities, groceries, subscriptions, and insurance.

    - Subtract these from your remaining budget.

    🍔 Step 4: Discretionary Spending:

    - Here's where you decide what truly matters.

    - Dining out, entertainment, pocket money – you choose how to spend.

    - Allocate funds to these categories wisely.

💼 Step 5: Savings (or Extra Debt Payment):

    - If your priority is paying off debt, allocate the remaining money to debt payments.

    - In our example, we have some savings goals.

    - Set aside money for planned expenses, like travel or gifts.

🔄 Step 6: Getting to Zero:

    - The magic happens when you get to zero.

    - Every dollar has a job, and the goal is to assign them all.

    - If you have any money left, put it towards your financial goals.

💪 Step 7: Be the Supervisor of Your Dollars:

    - Remember, you're in control.

    - Make sure every dollar fulfills its job – no extra jobs allowed!

📅 Step 8: Pay Debt Strategically:

    - When allocating money to debt, split it among your paychecks.

    - Don't wait until the end of the month; act as soon as you get paid.

    🔑 Conclusion:

    - Zero-based budgeting is all about intention and control.

    - Plan for everything, be intentional with every dollar, and watch your financial goals come to life.

    October's Special Budget Items:

    - Pause and reflect on your financial goals for October while considering the special October delights. What's the one thing you can do right now to get started? It might be grabbing our budget system, a powerful tool to guide your financial journey.

144 | Budget School Series (Pt. 5): Saving Money 101 plus Building Emergency Funds & Investing Wisely Sep 22, 2023
    Show notes

    Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

We're on day five of our budget school, and today, we're talking all about savings, emergency funds, and investments. Here are some episode highlights:

Savings 101: Savings is the part of your budget that's not being spent for right now. It's money set aside for the future. We want to help you be prepared for life's expected expenses.

Emergency Fund: Start with a mini emergency fund, like $1,000, which can vary depending on your family size and comfort level. The goal is to have 3-6 months' worth of living expenses set aside in a dedicated account.

Investments: Investing is a crucial part of financial planning. Aim to save at least 15% of your income for investments, but adjust based on your goals and financial situation.

Budgeting for Savings: Create savings buckets for annual or irregular expenses like Christmas, birthdays, and car maintenance. Calculate how much you need for these expenses annually and divide it by 12 to budget monthly.

Becoming Your Own Bank: The goal is to rely on your savings and investments rather than credit in emergencies. This financial freedom comes from careful planning and dedication.

    Action Steps:

    1. Identify where you are in your financial journey: emergency fund, debt payoff, savings buckets, or investments.

    2. Start funding your financial goals with each paycheck. Consistency is key.

    3. Prioritize building your emergency fund before diving into investments.

    4. Set up savings buckets for expected expenses, so you're prepared when they come up.

    5. Invest regularly to secure your financial future.

141 | Budget School Series Pt 2: All About Debt Plus Why & How To Get Debt-Free Sep 19, 2023
    Show notes

    Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

🎙️ Welcome back to Budget School! It's Day 2, and today we’re talking about debt. We know this wasn’t taught in school—so we made our own. Let’s get back to basics and give you a fresh start.

What Is Debt?💰 Debt = money you owe—car loans, credit cards, student loans, IRS bills, store cards, payment plans... all of it.💡 Pro Tip: If you borrowed from friends or family, pay it back—it’s the right thing to do.

Your Credit Score = I ❤️ Debt❤️ The more debt you have, the more the score “loves” you. But it’s a trap.🔑 Credit scores were invented in the 1950s to keep you borrowing. Your great-grandparents did just fine without them.

Debt-to-Income Ratio💼 This shows how much of your income is going to pay for the past.📉 If 20–36% of your income goes to debt, it’s time to take action.

The Minimum Payment Trap🧐 Credit card companies want you paying the minimum—forever.💡 Cut up and close the cards. They expect you to keep adding debt.

Acceptable vs. Petty Debt🏠 Mortgages and car loans = tied to assets.🛍️ Store cards = petty, high-interest traps.💰 Rich people use debt to grow wealth, not collect points.

Debunking the Myth🤔 Wealthy folks use strategic debt—not credit card perks.🚫 Credit card points aren't worth the stress.💡 Use a money market account, not a card, for emergencies.📆 Your age of credit doesn’t matter—being debt-free does.🚦 0% offers? Most don’t pay them off in time. Skip the risk. 🙅‍♂️

    Take Control of Debt

    1. Stop borrowing + cut up the cards

    2. List debts smallest to largest

    3. Call lenders to lower rates

    4. Throw extra money at the smallest one

    5. Imagine life with no payments 😌

140 | Budget School Series: The Ultimate Income Breakdown (Part 1) Sep 18, 2023
    Show notes

    Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

Welcome to our five-day budget school series! 🎉 Get ready to revolutionize your budgeting mindset. These next five days will break down the essentials of budgeting, from the basics to the advanced. We're here to guide you through it all.

💼 Income 101: It's not just about your regular paycheck. Your income includes everything from your job earnings to tips, bonuses, refunds, and even Grandma's birthday money. Every dollar needs a purpose in your budget, whether it's for essentials, savings, or a little treat for yourself.

🍕 Gross vs. Net Income: *Think of gross income as the whole pizza and net income as the slice you get to enjoy. We focus on net income for budgeting. Deductions like taxes matter, but we don't count them as income. And if you're dealing with debt or a tight budget, consider pausing investments to prioritize financial stability.

📆 Irregular Income vs. Regular Paychecks: Create a holding account for irregular income sources to maintain consistency in your budget. Pay yourself a consistent amount regularly. And remember, even with extra income, give it a purpose in your budget; don't let it vanish.

🗂️ Structuring Your Budget: Not everyone gets paid on the same day every month. If your payday falls at the end of the month, consider it part of the next month's budget. Your budget should always have a plan for every dollar.

💰 No Such Thing as an "Extra" Paycheck: Every dollar needs a job, even those from "extra" paychecks. Allocate them to essentials or your financial goals.

Your homework: Organize your income in your budget, align it with your paycheck dates, and evaluate if it meets your financial goals.
