Neerja was just 22 years old when she sacrificed her life while protecting hundreds of passengers on a flight which was hijacked by terrorists.

Irena Sendler: Warsaw Rescuer
It’s fair to say WWII and the Holocaust is one of the darkest eras in global history. But, as so often happens, the worst times can also bring out the best in some.
Take Irena Sendler, for example.
A social worker, Sendler was also a bona fide rescuer, carrying out 2,500 Jewish people from inside the increasingly desperate Warsaw ghetto.
In this episode, you’ll hear about how Irena smuggled the children out in inventive ways, how she evaded execution at the hands of the Nazis, and her thoughts on heroism.
She saved 2,500 people and thought it was normal.

For Olga of Kiev, life in early 945AD was good. She had a beautiful son, her beloved husband was out collecting tribute from the neighbours and pagan religion reigned.
Then those neighbours murdered her husband using a set of very bendy trees.
This was when Olga took the gloves off. And guys, she really never put them back on.
What came next was one of the most staggering revenge tours of all time. We’re talking weaponised pigeons, death by sauna and one very chaotic funeral.
In this episode, you’ll hear about how Olga rained terror down on those neighbours, how she became a Saint (yep) and even established one of the first tax systems.

So… who among us didn’t know the Underground Railroad wasn’t… actually… a railroad?
Turns out, more than you might think. No, it wasn’t underground, nor was it a railroad but it sure is an evocative description of the network that fought to help Black slaves escape the American south and the crimes against humanity taking place there.
And it’s how Harriet Tubman helped free dozens of slaves on 13 different missions.
Yep, you read that right. Thirteen (13) missions. This was a woman who would not give up and who put her life and her freedom on the line so many times.
In this episode you’ll hear about how Harriet rescued dozens of people from slavery, fought for women’s rights and served as a spy during the American Civil War.
Today she is a Black rights icon and a symbol of the fight for freedom. You know you’ve got to hear her story.

Exiled at a young age with her family, Sayyida al Hurra gently fanned the flames of vengeance throughout her childhood before using her fearsome intellect, charm and passion to cause some serious headaches for the Spanish. Oh, and she was friends with one of the most famous pirates ever: Barbarossa.

Barangaroo: Aboriginal Leader
You might know Barangaroo as the new dining and business precinct in Sydney Australia, but the real Barangaroo’s story is as far from the glitzy precinct as possible. Literally - Barangaroo wasn’t even born in that part of Sydney.
She was born around 15 kilometres away around Manly, where the Cammeraygal people lived. There, she grew to become a powerful leader.

Lady Trieu Thi Trinh: Legend and warrior
Part woman, part legend, what do we really know about Lady Trieu Thi Trinh? The Vietnamese resistance leader dubbed half Cinderella and half Joan of Arc, Lady Trieu’s story predates both of those fictional and historical women.

Like many Indigenous Australians born in the 1800s, Fanny Cochrane Smith’s story is one of adversity, struggle and colonisation.
But it’s also one of good food and even better, music. This week, we hear about Fanny Cochrane Smith, the voice behind the only recordings of Tasmania’s Indigenous languages.

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that the Nazis were the absolute fucking worst.
Dutch young women Hannie, Freddie and Truus knew this better than most. They spent many of their young years under Nazi occupation.
The good news? The Nazis probably hated these sweet-faced resistance fighters even more than the girls hated the Nazis.
They toted guns in their bicycle baskets and batted their lashes to distract Nazi’s while others carried out their guerilla resistance, and so much more. The horror of the Nazi regime lived with the women for years.
