Feeling Things with Amy & Kat

Feeling Things with Amy & Kat is a podcast for anyone who’s ever had feelings—or wants to. Hosted by Amy Brown and therapist Kat Van Buren, this is a space where nothing is off-limits. From deep reflections on childhood to pop culture obsessions to what’s happening in the world, all feelings deserve a seat at the table—big, small, awkward, joyful, confusing, and everything in between. At its core, it’s real friends having real conversations about real feelings. Some episodes go deep, some stay light, but all are rooted in curiosity, honesty, and connection. In a world that moves fast, sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause… and feel things.

Being Able To Be Yourself & The Beauty Of ‘Overflow’ (5th Thing) Jan 24, 2023
    Show notes

“Every year you make a resolution to change yourself. This year, make a resolution to be yourself.” - Unknown

Being able to BE YOURSELF is knowing your story, owning your story, and acknowledging what you bring to the table in your relationships. What is part of YOU being YOU that can overflow into someone else’s life when the time is right? This isn’t something to force…just encouraging us to be open to the idea of OVERFLOW (which is something we talked about on the ‘5th Thing’ last week!)

Amy reads an email update from our precious listener Ithzel and how another podcast listener OVERFLOWED into her life. Ithzel’s words are also going to OVERFLOW into your ears as you listen to it. It is a very amazing note!!!

Do You Binge Eat? Habits In Your Brain Are Likely To Blame (Outweigh) Jan 21, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Did you know snapping a rubber band on your wrist can help stop a negative pattern in the brain? Did you know you can create more self-acceptance by consistently saying 3 things in the mirror that you like about yourself? Did you know creating new habits in the brain might be more beneficial to your recovery than working through emotions?
Amy is answering these questions with her expert guest, Sheri Rowney, certified LENS (neurofeedback) practitioner & owner of Harmonized Brain Center.
‘Brain Over Binge’ (by Katheryn Hansen) is a book that was instrumental in Amy’s recovery from a very grueling binge, restrict, purge cycle. Amy & Sheri also talk about this quote from the book:
“I never want to discourage anyone from resolving issues in their lives, but I do want binge eaters to avoid working endlessly on other problems and emotions without ever addressing the habit in the brain.” - Brain over Binge 2nd Edition, pg. 243

Turning Dreams Into Reality (5th Thing) Jan 17, 2023
    Show notes

Amy found the perfect clone to an expensive perfume that is so much cheaper…you need this in your life!! Today’s Quote: “A dream written down without a date becomes a goal. A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by action becomes reality.” - Unknown
Since “trying is cool” Amy & Kat share a thread from @MikeFoster2000 called: “SOME THOUGHTS ON THOSE WHO TRY.” Such a good reminder to keep showing up for yourself even if something you put out into the world fails. Speaking of trying things…Amy’s going to do another LIVE podcast event. The date and location will be announced this coming Friday 1/20.
The word OVERFLOW was brought to Amy’s attention from a listener named Ashley Beck that emailed in. Here’s an excerpt:
“I finally listened to your live podcast and wanted to share some hopefully encouraging words about what I walked away with after listening. The word "overflow" kept coming to me as I was listening. Each person who spoke: you, Kat, Cristi, all had something to offer from your own life that was able to overflow to those listening. That concept of overflow is such a hopeful one that constantly gives me encouragement when I'm going through difficult times. I guess it's the idea that our pain is not in vain -- that our pain will be redeemed not only in ourselves, but also in the lives of others. We are able to share and at the very least help someone not feel alone, and at the best, help them find their own redemption and healing.”
This got Amy & Kat talking about what we all can overflow into someone else’s life this coming year. How can you use part of your story to help someone else? And while Ashley was referring to the LIVE podcast - this doesn’t have to be a public thing - just as a way to overflow into your family, your friends, someone else in your life that might need your story, your encouragement, your hope.

Dealing With Unsolicited Comments About Your Body (Outweigh) Jan 14, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: How do you handle a man calling you husky? Cryo Kat (Katherine Cox) joins Amy to talk about the time her grandma’s boyfriend called attention to her pregnant body by saying: “Well, aren’t you looking husky!!!” He then proceeded to tell her that his wife didn’t really gain any weight when she was pregnant with all 5 of their kids!! Well, Kat gained 100 pounds while pregnant, so she clearly found his words hurtful and beyond annoying. Kat has also dealt with an ex husband that killed her confidence…it’s almost like her body was never good enough for him…even when she felt her best.

This chat is a friendly reminder to not comment on people’s bodies!! People can even have good intentions with their comment (i.e. complimenting weight loss, but weight loss doesn’t always = good and weight gain doesn’t always = bad!)

If someone does make a comment about your body (or food you’re eating) that you’re not comfortable with…you’re allowed to share your feelings and say that you’d like to change the subject!!

Why Bad Decisions Can Be Good & More (5th Thing) Jan 10, 2023
    Show notes

Ever been on a bad date? Do you beat yourself up over bad decisions? Are you feeling hopeless? Do you need good/cute/affordable places to shop? Do you love Harry Potter? Well, this episode is for you…Amy & Kat talk about a lot of random things!

    The Quote:

“Good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from bad decisions.” -Anonymous

Kat tells a story about one of the worst dates she’s ever been on. After sharing the quote for this episode, Amy reads an email from Chelsea who opened up about some of her feelings right now (hopeless and angry) and this led to a conversation about identifying our emotions. Knowing what you’re feeling is amazing because that tells you what you need…and there is hope in that.

They also talk about Kat’s recent obsession with Harry Potter, cute places Amy’s been shopping lately, and some goals for the year when it comes to additional resources for the podcast (i.e. a newsletter!!)

Dr. Amy Porto (@dr.amyporto) is our expert guest today and she talks with Amy about words that matter when it comes to food because that often extends to what we say about our body…which leads to what we think of our body…and ultimately our self and self-worth.

As an expert in her field with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Porto speaks the truth about nutrition.
