Feeling Things with Amy & Kat

Feeling Things with Amy & Kat is a podcast for anyone who’s ever had feelings—or wants to. Hosted by Amy Brown and therapist Kat Van Buren, this is a space where nothing is off-limits. From deep reflections on childhood to pop culture obsessions to what’s happening in the world, all feelings deserve a seat at the table—big, small, awkward, joyful, confusing, and everything in between. At its core, it’s real friends having real conversations about real feelings. Some episodes go deep, some stay light, but all are rooted in curiosity, honesty, and connection. In a world that moves fast, sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause… and feel things.

Friendship Breakups & Advocating for Your Health (5th Thing) Feb 06, 2024
    Show notes

Today’s quote: “The view is always better from the high road – and there’s less traffic!”

Amy & Kat answer two questions from a listener email:

How should we feel if a friendship ends?

A lot of people don’t talk about ending friendships, but it can feel like more of a loss than someone we’ve been dating (even if you knew it was the right decision for yourself)!

It’s a VERY normal experience for a friendship to end (and it can really suck). Kat reminds us that grieving is not about getting over something – it’s about learning live with the loss.

How can get your doctor to take your symptoms seriously?

Amy is in perimenopause and is getting her hormones tested to try to figure out the right way to treat her symptoms. There’s a lot of shame around menopause especially if you’re doctor isn’t taking your symptoms seriously or is disregarding your concerns.

Reminder! You are allowed to have information & ask questions about your own health!! Don’t feel bad advocating for yourself and if you need to, find a new doctor who will listen to you!

PLUS – beauty mishaps: Veet for eyebrows and Preparation H for undereye?!

From Vision To Reality Through Grateful Anticipation (Outweigh) Feb 03, 2024
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: In the final episode of "Unfiltered Confidence: Navigating Self-Discovery Within Recovery," Leanne interviews Suzanne, a living testament to the transformative journey of overcoming disordered eating and toxic shame.

In "From Vision To Reality Through Grateful Anticipation." Suzanne shares her incredible experiences and the power of gratitude and (her own version of) manifestation by simply being "grateful in advance."

Through Leanne and Suzanne's candid conversation, it's an invitation to gain insight into the art of manifesting profound changes by using your brain. Suzanne shares how this included for her attracting a life partner after a prolonged period of not dating, and how she first started by creating radical self-acceptance and self-love within herself as prerequisites to receiving love from others.

They also explore the necessity of using specificity in setting intentions, highlighting the importance of writing down your aspirations as a tangible step towards turning visions into reality.

Things You Should Never Say To Your Partner (5th Thing) Jan 23, 2024
    Show notes

Today’s quote is from Brené Brown: “choose discomfort over resentment.”

Amy and Kat discuss Brené’s habit of using a “boundary ring” where she spins her ring around three times before she makes a decision as a way to keep her from saying yes when she really means no.

It’s 25 days until Kat’s wedding and she’s chasing down 100 RSVPs because of this very “forward” thing she did with her invites.

Amy shares a list of things you should never say to your partner:

    • Don’t use “never” and “always”
    • Instead of “yes, but” use “yes, and”
    • Don’t compare: “you should be more like _____”
    • Avoid dismissals like “you’re overreacting”, “calm down”, and “this is not that big of a deal”

One of Amy’s goals this year is trying to be a better adult and Kat talks about the process of growing up and “getting” old” in her latest episode of You Need Therapy.

Self-Forgetfulness, Sourdough Bread, Vision Boards & More Jan 18, 2024
    Show notes

Amy was given a book about self-forgetfulness from her friend, Jeremiah Carter, so he is on with her to talk about the meaning of it. Whether we admit it or not, we all care to varying degrees what people think of us. The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness (by Timothy Keller) is a little gem of a book that will have you considering how busy most of us are measuring up all of our words, actions, and responses to both the standards of those around us and our own standards. It’s a short read with a powerful message. Amy and Jeremiah also talk about homemade sourdough bread (and Amy's favorite way to eat it), a movie recommendation, visualization/manifestation gratitude and more!

Can You Take a First Date to a Wedding? (5th Thing) Jan 16, 2024
    Show notes

How is it already mid-January?? So yeah, time flies. But we are our own pilots according to Michael Altshuler: "The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot." Kat is piloting and navigating her wedding big time right now and Amy doesn't have a Hinge update for us....but there's still time for her to find a Hinge date for Kat's wedding. Something Amy is currently trying to pilot: Chocolate Chip Cookies!!!

Amy bought a cookbook that is all chocolate chip cookie recipes. It's called The Chocolate Chip Cookie Book - it's by Katie Jacobs and it's genius. There's recipes for classic chocolate chip cookies and more unique ones but also recipes for stuff like chocolate chip cheesecake and a cookie dough milkshake. There's tips and tricks shared as well. Could be a great birthday present for someone this year...someone in your life that loves cookies.

Speaking of cooking, do you use plastic or wood cutting boards? Amy & Kat also talk about why we shouldn't be using plastic cutting boards!
