Feast of Fun: Gay Talk Show

Interviews with amazing people, comedians and LGBTQ+ legends, with pop culture and politics wrapped up in a delicious candy coating of camp.

Hosted by Puerto Rican drag queen Fausto Fernós and his husband, Norwegian reality TV star Marc Felion, Feast of Fun began as one of the original 50 podcasts featured on iTunes in 2006, and celebrated by Apple: Feast of Fun “helped bring podcasting from an underground movement to a mainstream phenomenon.” Five time winner of the People’s Choice Podcast Award for Best LGBT podcast.

We’ve done thousands of shows with wonderfully wild people, LGBTQ legends and their friends, and tackle the tough questions like: is Sasquatch a drag queen? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll pop?

Subscribe and join us as we chat with gay musicians, counterculture comedians, trans pirates, lesbian warriors and pagan witches and celebrate the ridiculous and transform pain into pleasure.

A Decade with Stephen Meritt and the Magnetic Fields Dec 09, 2020
    Show notes

NOTE: This encore presentation of our episode of Feast of Fun is in honor of LD Beghtol, the singer-songwriter and Magnetic Fields Collaborator, he passed away at the age of 55 this week.
    -------
Songwriter Stephin Merritt is known as “the Cole Porter of his generation” for his unusual melodies, lovelorn lyrics and dry wit. But he’s also notoriously known as the most miserable man in rock music.
Today we’re talking to our good friend, filmmaker Kerthy Fix on her new documentary- “Strange Powers: Stephen Merit and the Magnetic Fields.”
The film primarily explores the long term friendship between Stephin Merrit and his band mate Claudia Gonson and gives us a never before seen look at the songwriter’s complex personal life. We’re also given an intimate look at the song making process for the band which has one of the most dedicated followings in popular music.
Listen as we chat with Kerthy on the ten years spent making the film, the overblown zip-a-dee-doo-dah controversy and what love song she thinks best represents the eccentric musician.
And we go even further back to Kerthy’s own early years as a performance artist, using the power of theater to cope with grief and the incredible origins of Pussilla, her superhero alter ego with the really strong you-know-what.

    FOF #2916 - A Very Lady Bunny Covid Christmas Dec 07, 2020
    Show notes

When winter’s chill sets upon us during the holiday season, it’s a perfect time for Lady Bunny to deliver a flaming hot roast, and this Christmas nobody’s safe, not even Santa!
In her new holiday special “What Child is This?” filmed at New York’s legendary Stonewall Inn to an audience of one, Lady Bunny examines our not-so-quiet desperation living in the middle of the Covid Pandemic where Republicans have politicized the act of human kindness of wearing masks.
Fair warning - this is not Lady Bunny’s first pandemic so you may recognize some of her legendary raunchy AIDS jokes in her show repurposed for Covid chuckles and she delivers a stocking full of peppermint twisted parodies like “Rudolpho The Uncut Reindeer,” “All I Want for Christmas (Is a Vaccine),” and “Santa’s Spreadin’ COVID Around.”

FOF #2915 - Kristen Stewart’s Lesbian Christmas Miracle on Ice Dec 03, 2020
    Show notes

Billed as the first mainstream rom-com to feature LGBTQ characters front and center, Hulu’s holiday feature "Happiest Season," aims to reach a big audience with its tender-hearted comedy starring Twilight’s Kristen Stewart and Terminator Dark Fate’s Mackenzie Davis.
How sentimental! Or is it? On the surface, these made for TV movies popularized by The Hallmark Channel and Lifetime Network seem at odds with putting LGBTQ relationships in focus, but Happiest Season is so much more than that.
The movie delivers a feel good story without reducing the legendary ensemble into ridiculous caricatures. It even shows the violence some queer people face when coming out.
Today we’re taking a look at all the queer romantic comedy, made-for-TV holiday films that will be stuffing your TV stocking this season, including “Happiest Season” which we think would be great if it was renamed K-Stew’s Queer Christmas Miracle (which of course was released during the Beaver Moon.)

FOF #2914 - Sari, Not Sorry! Kamani Sutra, the South Indian Drag Queen Dec 02, 2020
    Show notes

Way before the British colonized India and brought with them homophobia, racism and transphobia, lots of Indian people practiced the art of the Kama Sutra, an ancient guide that celebrates the art of living well, the nature of love and how to get your freak on.
In recent years, India has fought for and won marriage equality and while being gay is more accepted these days, the art of drag is still a bit of mystery to Indians and folks especially don’t quite know what to make of a bearded beauty.
Our guest today is South Asian bearded drag queen Kamani Sutra who was inspired to dress up in drag by her grandfather who used to dress up in women’s clothing to perform at festivals.
    KAMANI SUTRA: https://www.instagram.com/kamani_sutra_/
Listen as we chat with Kamani about growing up in the city of Hyderabad in the state of Telangana in South India, the role of hijras in Indian culture and why she wants to hear about your deepest desires.

Silence Equals Death Dec 02, 2020
    Show notes

Silence still equals death. Gran Fury's iconic design from 80s is making a comeback, this time tackling gun violence.
In the mid 80s, a broken healthcare system and a government content with letting people die from AIDS forced artists to make art that challenged, inspired and aroused the public to change their views on LGBT folks, HIV & AIDS.
When same sex kisses were shocking, scandalous and on the side of busses all over New York City. Gran Fury "Kissing Doesn't Kill" 1989.
The artists collective known as Gran Fury, with their bold use of provocative images, graphic design and guerrilla dissemination tactics was instrumental in changing the cultural climate- who can forget the thousands of people wearing black t-shirts with pink triangles and the words “Silence Equals Death,” a grim reminder that in order to survive we needed to speak up and be heard?
After the Orlando Massacre, LGBT rights groups are once again using images like the Silence Equals Death triangle almost 30 years later to try to change not only our culture and gun laws, but to also get rid of corrupt politicians. Politicians that are well funded by lobby groups like the NRA. Gun violence, anti-gay measures, abortion and now bathroom bills exist to do one thing: keep corrupt politicians in office.
Today, we take a look at the future of LGBT rights by taking a look at Gran Fury, the iconic artists collective that inspired a generation of people to act up, fight back and fight AIDS.

Unwrapping Pee Wee's Christmas Special Dec 01, 2020
    Show notes

One of our favorite oddball TV Christmas moments is Pee Wee’s Christmas Special, a star studded hour long event that aired in 1988 at the height of Pee Wee Herman’s popularity.
In the show, Pee Wee learns the true meaning of Christmas as Santa Claus asks him to share his gifts with all the boys and girls of the world.
The series starred the regular cast of Pee Wee’s playhouse and such campy stars as KD Lang, Oprah, Joan Rivers, Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon and a pre-HIV Magic Johnson.
Today we take you inside Pee Wee’s Christmas Special with the she-larious Irene Marquette, who is putting on a holiday extravaganza inspired by Pee Wee Herman’s Holiday Show complete with variety acts and animation in the Curio Show at Chicago’s IO Theater.
Join us as we talk about what happened to all those crazy wigs and costumes. Who was the most difficult celebrity to work with and why Paul Reubens felt trapped by his most popular character ever.

FOF #2913 - St Sukie de la Croix’s Very British Fairy Tale Nov 30, 2020
    Show notes

Once upon a time there was a little fairy named Sukie who grew up in the town of Bath, in Great Britain. He saw his world change through the impact of Stonewall and the rise of the modern gay rights movement, the AIDS crisis, and the rule of the Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher.
Then St Sukie moved to Chicago to be a journalist for LGBTQ publications and he became a queer legend after introducing himself as a vampire, fairy, pirate or viking.
In his new book "The Memoir of a Groucho Marxist: A Very British Fairy Tale," St Sukie takes us on a magical realist journey throughout his childhood growing up near Stonehenge in a world that also gave rise to Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and The Hobbit.
Today St Sukie de la Croix the artist formerly known as Darryl Michael Vincent finally lifts the veil on his mysterious persona and tells us of his early upbringing in a working class family in post WWII England and partying with Princess Margaret.
Listen as St Sukie weighs in on the Netflix series The Crown and X-Files’ Gillian Anderson’s portrayal of Margaret Thatcher, the soap opera of Prince Charles and Lady Diana and why Queen Elizabeth’s family struggles with being human.

FOF #2911 - Checking Your Attitude for Gratitude Nov 24, 2020
    Show notes

2020 has been a hell of a year. With the Covid pandemic raging on and Republicans pushing everything to the brink of collapse, it’s beyond ironic that the last show we did in 2019 with comedian Brian Sweeney was called “The Year of Hell” yet this year is definitely worse, or is it?
After all there’s nothing so rotten, that some good can’t come from it, we’ve had a pretty good election and with Georgia’s January runoff, progressive superstar Stacey Abrams is now a key figure in the balance of power between Americans and facism.
Today our favorite grouch Brian Sweeney joins us to look at things we're grateful for that did come to pass in 2020.
