    FANTI

Sometimes the people, places, and things we love don’t love us back. We’re fans, but we also have some ANTI- feelings toward them. Every week on FANTI, journalists Tre’vell Anderson and Jarrett Hill bring their pop culture and political expertise to things we must stan and stand up against. FANTI is a place where nuance reigns supreme with energetic, complicated, and sometimes difficult conversations that bring deep knowledge and thoughtful perspective to the things we love and rage about, from the White House to the Real House(wives).

    Da-Da Got Fired: Intersectionality & Code-Switching Oct 08, 2020
    Show notes

This week, Tre’vell and Jarrett are talking all about code-switching and how our identities and intersections dictate how we choose to (and are sometimes forced to) navigate the world.

There’s a phenomenon that all of us that are marginalized people experience, probably on a pretty regular basis, called code-switching when amongst mixed-company.

To code-switch is to change the way you speak – maybe almost involuntarily – when you’re engaging people perceived to be of similar lived experience, distinctly different than when you’re amongst people perceived to be of varied, differing backgrounds.

Most of us adjust our tone and timbre according to the person we're addressing. We speak to our friends one way. To our grandmother a different way. And to our boss in a completely different way.

But does code-switching still serve us?

Some feel it's the key to upward mobility. Molly from HBO's Insecure had sage advice for her new law intern Rasheeda aka Da-Da for refusing to code-switch but Da-Da seemed to be doing just fine without it.

    Until she wasn't.

    But first...

    Pass the Popcorn

Everybody in the White House got the rona.

    DIS/Honorable Mentions

This week, we're shouting out our own Tre'vell Anderson who interviewed pop superstar Normani for Teen Vogue. You can read the full article here.

Also, we're checking out The Forty-Year Old Version on Netflix.

    Finally…

The Census has been extended to October 31st, if you haven’t done it, do it today, it’s super easy, it won’t even take you 10 minutes. Go to Census.gov and fill it out right now

Divesting from Bill Cosby Ain't Easy Oct 01, 2020
    Show notes

This week, Tre’vell and Jarrett kick off part one of our three-part series about how Black America grapples with the parts of Black nostalgia some deem too problematic to enjoy.

In 2018 Issa Rae said this.

The subtext to this declaration of Black solidarity includes the fact that while the Black collective may be "rooting for everybody Black" we weren't talking about just anybody.

Specifically, we aren't talking about those within the Black community who do harm within and outside of said community.

So, we aren't rooting for Tory.

    Or Chris.

    Or Candace.

And we certainly aren't rooting for "America's Father" now that we know him better as "Pill Cosby. "

But where does that leave the hundreds of actors, writers and producers who helped to create products like The Cosby Show and had nothing to do with the man currently sitting in prison for being a monster?

And where does that leave the millions of Black people who grew up with the show (and its spinoff A Different World) and who would like to support the work of the cast and crew?

We'll offer you our take and you can decide for yourself...

    But first...

    Pass the Popcorn

Jarrett slowly realizes that he does in fact have an OnlyFans account.

    DIS/Honorable Mentions

This week, we're shouting out Glee star Amber Riley (aka Riley) who has a dope new single you can check out here.

We're also honoring the team over at The New York Times who broke the Trump taxes story.

An honorable mention to The Great Pottery Throwdown. Watch it stateside here. If pottery is not your bag you can check out American Barbecue Showdown here.

Stop arguing with your cousin on Facebook for a second and check out The Social Dilemma and wonder no more how we all got here.

Catch All In: The Fight for Democracy over on Amazon here.

    Show notes

This week, Tre’vell and Jarrett give the Real Housewives of Atlanta the FANTI treatment.

With news of breakout star Nene Leakes leaving the reality series this season, FANTI takes a look at the good, the bad and the ashy that is (in our humble opinions) the best of the franchise.

    But first...

    T-Time

Jarrett checks in with Tre'vell on their hunt for the perfect therapist match.

    DIS/Honorable Mentions

This week, we have special Emmy Honorable Mentions for Zendaya and Tyler Perry as well as Emmy loser Ramy. Congrats to all who were nominated and the folks who produced this year's show.

Whoopins (I Turned Out Fine. Or Did I?) Sep 17, 2020
    Show notes

This week, Tre’vell and Jarrett are addressing another controversial topic: spankings.

How individuals choose to raise their children is often a very personal decision based, in part, on how the parent(s) were disciplined themselves. Whether it's spankings, time-outs, withholding privileges or some combination, everyone has an opinion on what's the best way to raise good kids.

Reenforcing positive behavior and correcting negative actions in our children is important in most households but are their differences across ethnic lines?

FANTI examines corporal punishment and whether or not it's an effective means of discipline?

Jarrett and Tre'vell take a look at their own upbringings, what they think spanking did (or didn't do) to impact the kind of adults they grew up to be and reveal why they think some people actually deserved a good chancla to the head.

    But first...

    A Tough Question

Chris F wants to know where Jarrett and Tre'vell stand on the b-word.

    DIS/Honorable Mentions

This week, Jarrett has a mention for the US Census. You can click here for more information and to make sure you are being represented.

Tre'vell has a dishonorable mention for JK Rowling and her transphobic trash opinions.

Jarrett would like to acknowledge the first Black woman to run for Vice President of the United States, Charlotta Bass, with an honorable mention. Ms. Bass crawled back in 1952 so that Kamala Harris could walk.

An honorable mention comes from Tre'vell for ex Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum. Gillum recently sat down with journalist Tamron Hall and revealed that he is a bisexual man.

Jarrett's got one more honorable mention for friend to the show Dr Lori and her new book My God Today. You can follow her here.

Tre'vell has an honorable mention for Jarrett's new TikTok channel.

We're talking about a gene of music lovingly dubbed "Blue-Eyed Soul" and sharing a few of our White and Non-Black artists who have trafficked in it. Is it cultural appreciation, cultural appropriation or outright theft?

Get ready for another complex and complicado conversation about how we racialize music.

    But first...

    Pass the Popcorn:

This week, Jarrett, Tre'vell and Gerrick give us the rundown on the Brandy and Monica Versuz battle. All we really wanna know is:

Why were they fighting over a boy who clearly belonged to the streets?

My Brother's Keeper, or Nah (ft. Seth Brundle and Dr. Charles HF Davis) Aug 27, 2020
    Show notes

This week, Tre’vell and Jarrett are joined by Seth Brundle and Dr. Charles HF Davis for an honest and open discussion about the myriad of ways cishet Black men are failing the Black community.

This should go without saying but let's just say it:

    We LOVE Black men.

We love the resilience, the vulnerability, the joy in spite of a country that seeks to harm, the righteous anger, the creativity and all of the good-good that goes along with being a Black man in America and beyond!

    But…

There's some fuckbois in this house.

We dig deeper into the recent story of hip hop star Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez and why the latter thought pulling a gun on the former was anything other than the absolute worst idea on the planet.

Plus, we'll talk about the various ways Black men can show up for each other and their communities without falling victim to toxic masculinity.

    But first...

    A Tough Question:

This week, Jarrett seeks advice from Tre'vell on the screening process Black folks should implement to screen out potential White love interests who aren't as "down for the cause" as they should be.

    DIS/Honorable Mentions

This week, we give an honorable mention to Mike Hill who has a new book out and Jamie Harrison who could potentially unseat Lady G in the Senate. Click here if you're interested in making a donation to Harrison's campaign.

We've also got some honorable mentions for the team over at the Los Angeles Times who handled the Chicano Moratorium retrospective and Black game show contestants.

DISHONORABLE mentions go out to The Whitney Museum which recently “acquired” works from Black and Black queer and trans artists via print sales for the movement. In addition to the art they also had a bunch of audacity.

Lastly, a dishonorable mention to the police involved in the shooting of Jacob Blake.

Black Lives Matter...kind of weird that we keep having to say this.

Vote or Don't, But Dude Gotta Go (ft. Mervyn Marcano) Aug 20, 2020
    Show notes

This week, Tre’vell and Jarrett are joined by political strategist Mervyn Marcano to discuss the conflicts of being a voter and living in the intersections.

Does any party have a platform that truly aligns with the beliefs and needs of those groups most marginalized? Does the Democratic party deserve the Black vote, the LGBTQI vote or the vote of women? Have they done enough in this election cycle to earn those votes or do they leave voters in those groups in the position of choosing them by default when the other choice is Trump?

    But first...

    Pass The Popcorn:

This week, Tre'vell and Jarrett discuss "A Pimp Named Slickback" aka Katt Williams who recently partnered with Supreme for a digital ad campaign in which the comedian addressed our current moment and racial injustice. Click here for the full video.

    DIS/Honorable Mentions

This week, we give an honorable mention to First Lady (Always) Michelle Obama who gave a stirring speech during this week's Democratic National Convention. Can't wait to hear Be Best do the remix.

An honorable mention is in order for friend to the show Shar Jossell. If you're not checking out #SundaysWithShar on IG please remedy that immediately.

We have another honorable mention for former guest Antonio Johnson whose new book “You Next: Reflections in Black Barbershops” you can pre-order here or from your local Black owned bookstore.

An honorable mention for podcast host Kid Fury who recently revealed that they have been struggling a bit with their mental health and we encourage you to give yourself the space to feel the feelings we've all been collectively grappling with during these tough times and to be kind to each other and yourselves.

Finally, a DISHONORABLE mention for those who did not not get the memo that Trans Lives Matter! Our thoughts are with the three women recently attacked right here in Los Angeles. We have to do better and we WILL do better.

What does it mean to be Jewish and Black in America? Whose stories are accepted as the default representation of an ethnic group? We'll examine the various ways the social construct of race operate within the Jewish faith.

In a new segment, Tre'vell takes us on their journey to discovering more about themselves and the world through therapy.

Beyoncé is King Aug 06, 2020
    Show notes

This week, Tre’vell and Jarrett do their absolute best to give the gift, the voice, the Queen that is BEYONCÉ the FANTI treatment.

If you've been living under a rock for the past week maybe you missed the news about Mrs. Knowles Carter and her reinterpretation of Disney's The Lion King for her movie Black is King.

We'll get into what's so great about Beyoncé (SPOILER ALERT: Everayyythaaaang!) and take time to dissect a few of the criticisms the multi-talented star has received for the film and in her career so far.

Is Beyoncé using "Africa" as a costume or is it merely another example of African Americans desire to reconnect to their stolen roots?

Is the artist guilty of cultural appropriation or is it appreciation?

We'll take a deeper look at the artist's love letter to the continent and parse through a few of the milestones of her long and successful career.

    But first...

    A Tough Question

This week, Tre'vell would like to know if it's necessary or even preferable for a Black person to have a Black therapist?

DIS/Honorable Mentions (Black is King Edition)

This week, Jarrett has an honorable mention for Yemi Alade whose work on "Don't Jealous Me" was impeccable. You can pick up her latest album, Woman of Steel, here. Costume Designer Zerina Akers, Colorist Robert Crosby and Lead hairstylist Neal Farinah along with a team that included Nakia Rachon Collins all did what needed to be done.

An honorable mention to Mrs. Tina Knowles-Lawson for gifting us with the gift!
