    FANTI

Sometimes the people, places, and things we love don’t love us back. We’re fans, but we also have some ANTI- feelings toward them. Every week on FANTI, journalists Tre’vell Anderson and Jarrett Hill bring their pop culture and political expertise to things we must stan and stand up against. FANTI is a place where nuance reigns supreme with energetic, complicated, and sometimes difficult conversations that bring deep knowledge and thoughtful perspective to the things we love and rage about, from the White House to the Real House(wives).

We'll get into all of that...

    But first…

It's T-Time and Jarrett has a topic up for discussion all about body image, mental health and self care.

Freelancing In Beyoncé's Gig Economy Dec 10, 2020
    Show notes

This week, Jarrett Hill and Tre'vell Anderson are talking about their complex and complicado relationships to the gig economy.

    2020 has been extra raggedy.

    You know. You were here.

With so many of us unemployed, underemployed and forced to find creative ways to keep our heads above water (Good Times!) we wanted to dedicate this episode to all of the folks out there driving for ride-share companies, delivering groceries, pitching to editors and otherwise hustling.

    We see you.

    But first…

Have you heard the good news?

FANTI Podcast is one of Apple Podcast Favorites of 2020!

    Pass the Popcorn

The Michael Jackson—R. Kelly Episode Dec 03, 2020
    Show notes

Disclaimer: This episode contains a frank discussion about the careers of Michael Jackson and Robert Kelly. While we do make mention of allegations of sexual assault and abuse, that is not the crux of this episode. However, if that’s something you’d rather not listen to, we get it. Feel free to skip this episode and revisit your favorite from our catalog here.

This week, Jarrett Hill and Tre'vell Anderson finally tackle a topic the #FANTIfam has been requesting for months: How do we engage (and should we engage?) with the music catalogues of Michael Jackson and R. Kelly.

Unless you've truly been living under a rock we don't need to catch you up to speed on the careers of either. We are also going to assume you don't need a refresher on any of the allegations that surround the legacies of either artist.

Is it okay to listen to the music R. Kelly wrote for other artists while removing his entire discography from the Spotify playlist? Should we refrain from moonwalking at events? Where does one draw the line when people who have been accused of the unforgivable leave behind such a rich musical imprint?

    But first…

Have you heard the good news?

FANTI Podcast is one of Apple Podcasts 2020 Favorites!

Should We Break Bread Or Break Our Silence? Nov 26, 2020
    Show notes

The holidays are upon us and with that comes family dinners, Zoom gatherings (hello, 2020!) and a spirit of community across the nation. While the nation grapples with a volatile election year within an already volatile four years of civil unrest, some have advocated for folks to find a path toward healing, a chance to put down our differences and look toward a new beginning as a healed nation.

But will doing so cause more harm than good for those who have been the target of subjugation? Should it fall to those groups to extend the olive branch?

“We can disagree and still love each other. Unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist.”

FANTI hosts Jarrett Hill and Tre'vell Anderson get into the complex and complicado of reconciliation and who should be doing the work.

    But first...

    Pass the Popcorn

Tre'vell and Jarrett chat about People's 2020 Sexiest Man Alive list and they have...opinions.

    DIS/Honorable Mentions

This week, Jarrett has an honorable mention for the phenomenally produced The Fresh Prince of Bel - Air reunion and specifically "OG Aunt Viv" Ms. Janet Hubert! If you missed it you can check it out here. He's also shouting out Barack Obama's new book and Grammy-nominated artist Mykal Kilgore.

Speaking of Grammys. Tre'vell has an honorable mention for Meghan Thee Stallion whose new album is… a BOP!

Lastly, an honorable mention for the word "ashy." IYKYK.

"BIPOC" Kinda Sucks Nov 19, 2020
    Show notes

Amid the social unrest of this year, and the calls to hold accountable the cops who murdered Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and George Floyd (among others), a new acronym came to prominence as a means to refer to marginalized folks -- BIPOC. That’s B-I-P-O-C, or Black, Indigenous, People of Color. It has now replaced POC as the way to refer to non-white folks en masse.

But is the term just another way for people to collapse our identities and experiences into one? FANTI hosts Jarrett Hill and Tre'vell Anderson dive deeper into the etymology of the term, it's usefulness and where it misses the mark.

    But first...

    Pass the Popcorn

Tre'vell and Jarrett chat about the latest news surrounding the Covid-19 vaccine.

    DIS/Honorable Mentions

This week, Jarrett has some contrarian opinions about the very popular show Schitt's Creek while Tre'vell gets into the IG accounts Ballroom Reacts and that of the fabulous Danielle Young. Jarrett has an honorable mention for the Chilled Cow YouTube channel while Tre'vell would like all of those out their hating on Harry Styles in a dress to go somewhere and sit down. Finally, Jarrett wraps up the episode with a special dishonorable mention for himself and his inability to stop watching The Bachelorette.

Learn more about BIPOC organizing here.

    Is Dave Chappelle Half-Baked? Nov 12, 2020
    Show notes

This week, we're diving into the career of comedian Dave Chappelle.

The legend of stand-up recently returned to Saturday Night Live to host their first episode since the 2020 presidential race was called for Joe Biden. The last time Chappelle hosted was the first episode following the election of President Donald Jackass Trump.

He performed a 16-minute monologue that took aim at anti-maskers, racists and threw in a little bit of both-sideserism to boot but some of his more dated material taking cheap shots at the LGBTQI community left us feeling…tired.

Has the multi-talented actor, comedian fallen off or has the world evolved around him?

We'll answer that question and more.

    But first...

    Pass the Popcorn

Tre'vell and Jarrett talk about where they were when they heard Joseph Biden got elected.

    DIS/Honorable Mentions

This week, Jarrett has an honorable mention for the #fantifam members who reached out over the past two weeks with feedback about where to purchase masks, about his obsession with the show The Lie and who just had something to say. We love it!

Tre'vell is coming in hot with an honorable mention for the blessed and highly favored Pastor Telley Lynnette Gadson who gave the sermons of all sermons for those who have reached peak Trump-fatigue. Jarrett also has an honorable mention for gospel artist Tye Tribbett. ICYMI catch our FANTI episode all about gospel here.

An honorable mention for Thee Blue Ivy Carter who will provide narration for Mathew A. Cherry's Oscar-winning book and short film Hair Love in audio-form. Her power! HER POWER!

Jarrett continues his fascination with what Dwight PayPal are doing with his recommendation of HBO's The Undoing starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant.

Our final honorable mention comes from Tre'vell and goes to Mauree Turner who was the first nonbinary person elected to Oklahoma's state legislature as well as the first Muslim person.

What Was Said?! (Again) Nov 05, 2020
    Show notes

Lordy lordy, look who made it to episode 40!

We're back with another FANTI episode and we're taking more audience questions from you! That's right, we're taking some of your very important emails, DMs and @ tweets and you all did not disappoint.

    But first...

    Pass the Popcorn

Tre'vell and Jarrett have an honest discussion about how they are each coping under the (third wave) of the lockdown.

    DIS/Honorable Mentions

This week, Jarrett and Tre'vell have an honorable mention for you. Yes, YOU.

2020 has been a whirlwind with murder hornets, a pandemic, and a janky election cycle that has us all feeling more than a little drained.

Being able to produce a weekly show and commiserate with you all (aka the #FANTIfam) has been a silver lining in a truly one of a kind year.

Let's remember during these exasperating times to be good to each other and to ourselves.

    Love,

Plus, a sneak-peak of Jarrett's chat with "Bad Hair" director Justin Simien and more!

Is Hallalujah-ween just as satisfying as trick or treating? Will White celebs somehow find a way to do Blackface this year despite wearing a mask? Do we need to be reminded again that "we are a culture not a mask?" Spooky skeleton season and even spookier candy corn gets the FANTI treatment
