    Show notes

    Take 10 with Tim – June 23, 2023, @ 8am
1.Break up the Reds. With the additional De La Cruz, McLain, and Abbott, the Reds have been streaking. They are five games over .500 and leading the NL Central. Do they make the playoffs?
a.Let’s look at all the playoff races.
2.You nailed the eminent promotion of Gavin Williams on Sunday. Were you pleased with the results? Is he someone you will roster for the rest of the season?
3.Kenta Maeda is back from the IL today (Friday). Do you dare start him against the Tigers (who have been better of late)
4.Julio Teheran has been a revelation, but how long can this continue? What is your strategy with him? Would you try and sell him for another piece, or would you keep running him out there?
5.Another guy that’s been a revelation is Nate Eovaldi. But I received an email from one of our Patreon members saying that his velo has been down. Sure enough, it has. What do you do about him?
6.Who would you rather roster the rest of the season?
    a.Aaron Judge or Yordan Alvarez?
b.Vlad Guerrero Jr. or Josh Naylor?
    c.Jonathan India or Marcus Seimien?
    d.Francisco Lindor or Bryson Stott?
    e.Josh Jung or Rafael Devers
f.Next Season: Julio Rodriguez or Corbin Carroll?
7.Who would you rather roster the rest of the season?
    a.Framber Valdez or Gerrit Cole?
    b.Tyler Wells or Joe Ryan?
    c.Bryce Elder or Cristian Javier?
d.Felix Bautista or any other closer?
e.Next season: Eury Perez or Spencer Strider?
8.Listener Question (CubFan815): Are there any pitchers in mlb (or up-and-coming) that you are worried will sustain injury due to their mechanics?
9.What one hitter will you be targeting for this weekend’s FAAB?
10.What one pitcher will you be targeting for this weekend’s FAAB?

    2073 - Waiver Wire - June 11, 2023 Jun 12, 2023
    Show notes

Ji-Hwan Bae, 2B/OF, PIT (CBS: 43% rostered, ESPN: 7% rostered): Why is Ji-Hwan Bae rostered to such a low level? He’s 19-of-24 swiping bases, good for fifth overall as we enter mid-June. It’s time to give your Free Agent pool a scan to see if somehow he has been overlooked. He shouldn’t be.
Will Brennan, OF, CLE (CBS: 9% rostered, ESPN: 3% rostered): In the past seven games, Brennan has gone 11-for-29 with two homers and seven RBI. On most teams, that would be a good week. In Cleveland, it’s otherworldly.
Kerry Carpenter, OF, DET (CBS: 8% rostered, ESPN: 1% rostered): The injuries to Riley Greene and now Akil Baddoo have allowed Kerry Carpenter to play full-time. He has gone 10-for-15 in his past four games and should see a steady diet of at-bats until the walking wounded are back walking.
Colton Cowser, OF, BAL (CBS: 28% rostered, ESPN: 1% rostered): If it wasn’t for the quad injury, there’s a good chance Cowser would already be plying his trade in Baltimore. Now recovered, how long will it take to see him plying his trade in Baltimore? My guess is not very long.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand, 3B, CIN (CBS: 45% rostered, ESPN: Everyone else has been called up in Cincinnati. It’s only a matter of time before Encarnacion-Strand gets his opportunity. With 17 home runs and a .427 BA in 177 at-bats at Triple-A Louisville, that opportunity will likely come sooner rather than later.
Stuart Fairchild, OF, CIN (CBS: 1% rostered, ESPN: not rostered): Jake Fraley once again hits the IL, joining Wil Myers and Nick Senzel. Stuart Fairchild has helped pick up the slack and thus far has done an admirable job, slugging a couple of homers with 19 RBI and seven thefts. The outfield has taken a big hit injury-wise in the past couple of weeks. Fairchild could provide at least a temporary option.
Nolan Jones, OF, COL (CBS: 42% rostered, ESPN: 8% rostered): Are we finally seeing a breakout from Nolan Jones? In five games this week, he has gone 6-for-16 with a pair of homers. It’s worth a small bid to determine if this hot streak is sustained.
Corey Julks, OF, HOU (CBS: 10% rostered, ESPN: 1% rostered): Long-term, Julks is more than likely a fourth outfielder, but short-term, the stolen base potential is providing sneaky value. He has four thefts this week with more to come, and for a small investment could be accumulating them on your Fantasy squad.
Nick Pratto, 1B/OF, KCR (CBS: 29% rostered, ESPN: 4% rostered): Over the past seven games, Pratto has gone 6-for-22 with a homer and 3 RBI, hitting mainly out of the leadoff slot. Playing time should not be an issue with Vinnie Pasquantino on the IL with right shoulder instability.
Emmanuel Rivera, 1B/3B, ARZ (CBS: 4% rostered, ESPN: 1% rostered): It’s crowded in Arizona, with Josh Rojas and Emmanuel Rivera in a job share, but Rivera appears to be slowly winning the battle. The power and speed are limited, but there’s no doubting Rivera’s ability to control the strike zone. In deeper Leagues, that .860 OPS provides value.
Tarik Skubal, SP, DET (CBS: 25% rostered, ESPN: 4% rostered): The rehab clock has started, and so far, so good. We’re looking at a much-anticipated early July return to the Tigers rotation. Buying in early will save you some of that precious FAAB.
A.J. Smith-Shawver, SP, ATL (CBS: 58% rostered, ESPN: 13% rostered): The 20-year-old righthander got that first start under his belt and handled it in fine fashion. He went 5 1/3 innings allowing two unearned runs in a no-decision. That has earned him another start against the Tigers. Go get him and get him active.
Mark Vientos, 3B, NYM (CBS: 17% rostered, ESPN: 1% rostered): Pete Alonso got plunked on the wrist last Wednesday, suffering a bone bruise and sprained left wrist that will leave him sidelined for the next month. There will be opportunities in New York for additional at-bats, and it’s worth a small bid to see if Vientos and that power potential gets his share of them.
Bryan Woo, SP, SEA (CBS: 13% rostered, ESPN: 1% rostered): The first game was underwhelming, to say the least, but Woo bounced back nicely in his second outing, holding the Angels to two runs over 4 2/3 innings while chipping in with seven strikeouts. He has earned another start.
    The Closer Report
Adbert Alzolay, RP, DET (CBS: 12% rostered, ESPN: 2% rostered): With two saves in his past five appearances and sporting a 30/4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 30 appearances, Alzolay has moved into the setup role with an eye towards working the ninth regularly.
Scott McGough, RP, ARZ (CBS: 8% rostered, ESPN: 2% rostered): McGough got off to a rough start and lost the closer job but has rebounded nicely. He hasn’t allowed an earned run since May 12, a span of 10 appearances (14 IP). Over that span, he has amassed 21 strikeouts. In Leagues that count holds, it’s time to include him in your future plans.
A.J. Minter, RP, ATL (CBS: 24% rostered, ESPN: 12% rostered): The season has been one of very high highs and very low lows, but after both the success and failure, Minter has shown a return to the “good AJ”. He has two saves and a win this week and has solidified his hold on the setup gig. It’s time to get him rostered and active, again.
Andres Munoz, RP, SEA (CBS: 51% rostered, ESPN: 47% rostered): There was considerable debate as to whether Paul Sewald would own the ninth inning for the M’s heading into 2023. A right shoulder strain suffered by Munoz back in early April made that decision a moot point. Well, Munoz has returned from the IL and is already flashing that huge strikeout potential. In a worst-case scenario, you wind up with a high K/9 setup man. At the best, a job share closing and save opportunities. It seems like a win/win to us.

2072 - The top 10 pitchers for the rest of the season Jun 09, 2023
    Show notes

    Take 10 with Tim – June 9, 2023
1.Oddly, one of the bigger news stories in our country are the Canadian wildfires and the smoke that’s making it’s way to Northeast and even as far South as North Carolina. In our little world, multiple baseball games have been cancelled which is wreaking havoc in H2H Leagues. Maybe our Canadian connection can clue us in as to when this might let up?
2.Elly De La Cruz – Thoughts
3.Jacob deGrom – It was the news we all feared. It’s his second TJ Surgery and based on other similar pitchers, his held quite long. The length of time for TJ Surgeries is roughly 10 years. Ask Walker Buehler.
a.If you have him, what are you to do?
b.What do you think the Rangers will do?
c.As a side note, the Rangers elected NOT to get insurance given the cost. Now we know what the insurance companies thought.
4.Alex Manoah was finally demoted to Low-A so he can be at the Complex in Dunedin…not because he’s that bad, well…maybe… Anyway, let’s predict
a.When does he make his return?
b.ERA and K/9 once he returns (i.e for the time he’s pitching, not including his previous starts)
    5.Rest of the season game.
    a.Jonny DeLuca or James Outman
b.LaMonte Wade Jr. or Seya Suzuki
    c.Freddie Freeman or Yordan Alvarez
d.Taj Bradley, Tanner Bibee or Logan T. Allen
    e.Taijuan Walker or Blake Snell
6.Kevin Gausman seems to have found another gear this season. He’s struck out 113 in 82 innings with 18 strikeouts.
a.Let’s rank the Top 5 to 10 pitchers going into next season
    i.Shane McClanahan
    ii.Gerritt Cole
    iii.Shoehi Ohtani
    iv.Corbin Burnes
    v.Zac Gallen
    vi.Kevin Gausman
    vii.Spencer Strider
    viii.Joe Ryan
    ix.Sandy Alcantara
    x.Christin Javier
    xi.Framber Valdez
7.Will Luis Arraez have a .400 batting average on the last day of the season?
a.I know he’s not a great fantasy option with one home run and one stolen base, but he can be a nice option if you punt batting average early in the draft with, say a Bobby Witt Jr. type of player. Thoughts on how you handle him on a fantasy team?
8.Aaron Judge hits the IL with a right toe sprain, and it could him a bit to recover. What should fantasy managers do? Give me a couple of options in a 12-team league?
9.What one hitter will you target for this weekend’s FAAB?
10.What one pitcher will you target for this weekend’s FAAB?

    Fantasy Baseball Live! – June 4, 2023
Segments 1 and 2 – Review of the weekend games
    Additional Questions
1.Two young pitchers made their MLB debut. The Tigers Reese Olson looked great, and the more heralded Bryan Woo of the Mariners got roughed up. Are you interested in either?
2.Ke’Bryan Hayes went back-to-back with home runs on Friday and Saturday. I did a baseballsavant review on him, and the data loves this guy. What say you?
3.Cedric Mullins goes down with a hamstring injury, and the Orioles sign Aaron Hicks. The Orioles are smart, but I don’t know about this one.
4.Weekly League dilemma. Jose Altuve is sitting out Saturday and Sunday with an oblique injury. He’s not being sent for any more tests. Do you start him on Monday in weekly leagues?
5.Alex Faedo and Marco Gonzalez hit the IL. Both are not household names but are, nonetheless, warm bodies; which we are quickly running out of.

2069 - Drafting the first round for the rest of the season Jun 02, 2023
    Show notes

    Take 10 with Tim – June 2, 2023
    1.Questions 1 through 4 – Redrafting the first round
a.Let’s draft the first round as if we were starting a new league for the second half. I’ll go first and take Ronald Acuna (smile)
2.The Tigers lost both Eduardo Rodriguez and Riley Greene on Tuesday. Both could be out for a while.
    a.Who are the pickups?
b.Harrison Bader also hits the IL. What else is new… Who is the pickup in New York?
3.Cedric Mullins goes down with a hamstring injury, and the Orioles sign Aaron Hicks. The Orioles are smart, but I don’t know about this one.
4.Gavin Stone was sent down, and Michael Grove gets the call against the Yankees this Sunday. Are you starting him?
a.Bobby Miller starts the weekend against the Yankees…are you starting him?
5.Team McLeod/High is leading our DL League. Congratulations to them…they have a great team. But they also decided to moan to the league that they have 13 guys on the IL. Is this proper fantasy baseball etiquette? Rich from NC will weigh in with the dangers of tempting the Fantasy Gods.
6.What one hitter are you targeting for this weekend’s FAAB?
7.What one pitcher are you targeting for this weekend’s FAAB?
