The Republican Party emerged in 1854 to combat the Kansas–Nebraska Act and the expansion of slavery into American territories. The early Republican Party consisted of northern Protestants, factory workers, professionals, businessmen, prosperous farmers, and after 1866, former black slaves. If the Republican Party of the mid 1800's were to look at the modern day Conservative it would be almost indistinguishable from what they originally envisioned. However, the guest this week, George Weigel, represents a facet of the Republican Party that still believes in the riches of the Judeo-Christian tradition to contemporary questions of law, culture, and politics, in pursuit of America’s continued civic and cultural renewal. George is a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, and was the previous president of that organization from 1989 through June 1996.
The hosts spoke with George about a wide range of issues from the looming threat of war from Russia, as they amass over 100k troops along the Ukrainian border, to the erosion of a universal understanding of truth.

Mr. Weigel is perhaps best known for his widely translated and internationally acclaimed two-volume biography of Pope St. John Paul II: the New York Times bestseller, Witness to Hope (1999), and its sequel, The End and the Beginning (2010). George Weigel is the author or editor of more than thirty other books, many of which have been translated into other languages. Among the most recent are The Cube and the Cathedral: Europe, America, and Politics Without God (2005); Evangelical Catholicism: Deep Reform in the 21st-Century Church (2013); Roman Pilgrimage: The Station Churches (2013); Letters to a Young Catholic (2015); The Fragility of Order: Catholic Reflections on Turbulent Times (2018); The Next Pope: The Office of Peter and a Church in Mission (2020); and Not Forgotten: Elegies for, and Reminiscences of, a Diverse Cast of Characters, Most of Them Admirable (2021). His essays, op-ed columns, and reviews appear regularly in major opinion journals and newspapers across the United States. A frequent guest on television and radio, he is also Senior Vatican Analyst for NBC News. His weekly column, “The Catholic Difference,” is syndicated to eighty-five newspapers and magazines in seven countries.

Have you heard the term, "We are a Christian Nation, founded on Christian Ideals?" Our guest this week, Brian Kaylor, would likely take issue with a comment like that, and guess what...He's also a Christian Pastor, Editor, and President of one of the oldest Christian publications in America called Word & Way, founded in 1896. Brian, unlike many evangelicals in America, is steadfast in his efforts to ensure that separation of church and state rings true for believers and non-believers. It's not uncommon to find Brian testifying alongside atheist and satanist when state legislatures are pushing for Bible literacy classes in public schools, or when there's a bill giving special rights to collegiate religious student associations.
This is an amazing chat and discussion that I hope you will enjoy!
Check out this short documentary that features Brian Kaylor "Is America a Christian nation? Pastors at odds about fusion of faith and politics" https://www.cbsnews.com/news/america-christian-nation-religious-right/?fbclid=IwAR0UdEeT6iOzWHCN67Hwy51yrSM5JtNFB0Q7AkNRopjzlTag4ZQ7QS4XASs

Brian T. Kaylor is an award-winning author and journalist. He serves as Editor & President of Word&Way (a Baptist magazine in the Midwest) and as Associate Director of Churchnet (a Baptist network in Missouri).

Brian is the author of four books on religion and politics: Vote Your Principles: Party Must Not Trump Principles (Union Mound Publishing, 2016), Sacramental Politics: Religious Worship as Political Action (Peter Lang, 2015), Presidential Campaign Rhetoric in an Age of Confessional Politics(Lexington Books, 2011) and For God’s Sake, Shut Up! He serves the Baptist World Alliance as Vice-Chair of the Communication Advisory Committee, and as a member of the Awards Committee, Commission on Christian Ethics, Nominating Committee, and General Council.

REPLAY: "Cancelled, But Called" - w/ Joe Walsh Jan 11, 2022

**We're currently on a brief vacation and will return in early 2022, but wanted to replay some of our favorite episodes and interviews from this past year. Hope you enjoy!**
Joe Walsh is a former Illinois congressman elected to Congress in the Tea Party wave of 2010. Following his service in Congress, Walsh became one of the most popular conservative talk radio hosts in the country, syndicated in major markets throughout the United States. In August of 2019, Joe announced his candidacy for president of the United States, waging a Republican primary challenge against Donald Trump. So, how does a person go from a one-time supporter of Trump, tweeting in the fall of 2016, "On November 8th, I'm voting for Trump. On November 9th, if Trump loses, I'm grabbing my musket. You in?” to writing a book called: “F*ck Silence: Calling Trump Out for the Cultish, Moronic, Authoritarian Con Man He Is”?

Will Wright (Political Host) talks with Joe Walsh on this week’s Faithful Politics Podcast about his career as a social worker, politician, and political homelessness. This episode shows you a side of Joe Walsh that you probably have never seen, or heard, before, as he reflects on past regrets, redemption, and the future of the GOP.

    About Joe Walsh

William Joseph Walsh (born December 27, 1961) is an American politician, conservative talk radio host, former social worker, and former 2020 Republican presidential candidate who served one term in the United States House of Representatives representing Illinois's 8th congressional district.

Born and raised in the Chicago metropolitan area, Walsh began his career as a social worker providing education and job skills training to students in low-income areas, gradually becoming more politically active. In the 1990s, he identified as a moderate Republican, but he later became a conservative and a Tea Party activist.

During his time in Congress, Walsh was criticized for his often personal attacks against members of the Democratic Party and, specifically, President Barack Obama. He accused the president of abandoning the U.S.–Israel alliance and bankrupting the country. Walsh maintained a no-compromise approach to legislating that included rejecting any tax increases. He consistently voted against raising the federal debt ceiling and authored a balanced budget amendment to the United States Constitution. Later, during his presidential campaign, Walsh expressed regret for some of the comments and stances he made during his time in Congress.

After leaving office, Walsh began hosting a talk radio show. Though initially a strong supporter of Donald Trump, Walsh became increasingly critical of the president and, on August 25, 2019, he announced his presidential campaign.

Gaslighting is a tactic in which a person or entity, in order to gain more power, makes a victim question their reality. Enter former-President Trump. Over the last four years, America has been under the influence of a person who seemingly graduated from Gaslighting University with a Ph.D. in Alternative Facts. Whether Trump knows it or not, he is masterful in the art of gaslighting-jitsu. The guest this week may know a thing or two about being gaslit, as she has been the target of this Trump tactic, Amanda Carpenter joins Will and Josh to discuss her book, "Gaslighting America: Why We Love It When Trump Lies to Us". They also discuss the future of the Republican Party, and how faith played a key role in her life during one of the most heinous acts perpetrated by the Trump campaign during 2016 primaries.
    Guest Bio:
Amanda Carpenter is a political commentator for CNN and author of GASLIGHTING AMERICA: Why We Love It When Trump Lies To Us. Prior to CNN she was the Communications Director for Senator Ted Cruz and previously served as Senior Communications Advisor and Speechwriter to Sen. Jim DeMint.
For both senators, Carpenter crafted countless op-eds, speeches, talking points, briefing papers, jokes, press releases, tweets, Facebook posts, and other materials on a range of subjects before the United States Senate, including but not limited to economics, campaigns, healthcare, foreign affairs, and constitutional matters. Her work for them has been published in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, and other outlets.
Roll Call featured her in a 2014 front-page profile, "Ted Cruz's Twitter Torrent: Outspoken GOP Aide Takes on Own Party" calling her "Capitol Hill's most-followed staffer" on Twitter with more than 56,000 followers.
In 2013, she led the creation of Cruz’s viral #MakeDCListen speech and campaign that pollster Frank Luntz said produced "the best political sound-byte of 2013.” In 2011, she was named by the Washington Post as one of the "Top 10 Capitol Hill Staffers to Watch."

Every leader in the world, from President Putin to President Biden, has had a love/hate relationship with the media. When coverage is good and beneficial to their agenda, the media can do no wrong in the eyes of elected officials. However, when honest reporting exposes and uncovers an area of weakness, well that causes leaders to vilify, attack, and in some extreme cases implicate reporters as a possible co-conspirator under the Espionage Act of 1917. Thanks, Obama.
This week we talk with veteran journalist Julie Mason and Olivier Knox on the role of journalism in keeping our elected officials honest. With trust in the media at an all-time low, according to Edelman's annual trust barometer, Julie and Olivier provide some useful insight on how we got here, the future of journalism, and what news consumers can do to become more media literate.
One thing that was discussed in the show was the slow collapse of local newspapers and media. So if you haven't subscribed to your local news organization with a paid subscription please do so, it's the only tool the public has to keep our local officials accountable.

In the final episode of our series exploring what Critical Race Theory (CRT) is, we speak with author, mathematician, and political commentator, Dr. James Lindsay. James has written six books spanning a range of subjects including religion, the philosophy of science and postmodern theory. He is the founder of New Discourses and currently promoting his new book "Cynical Theories: How Activist Scholarship Made Everything about Race, Gender, and Identity―and Why This Harms Everybody."
Dr. Lindsay offers a viewpoint and opinion on Critical Race Theory that differs from the previous two guests in this series. While many believe that CRT is a legal framework by which to view the racial disparity among minorities, Dr. Lindsay argues that this is a dangerous, and racist, theory that undermines the progress and the vision of the Civil Rights Movement.
If you are interested in hearing a counter argument to CRT, Dr. Lindsay provides a well informed and well researched view that you are unlikely to hear anywhere else.

**We're currently on a brief vacation and will return in early 2022, but wanted to replay some of our favorite episodes and interviews from this past year**
When you think about the image of masculinity, what comes to mind? Many, and I mean many, people think of William Wallace from Braveheart, others think of folks like Oliver North, and even some think of John Wayne, the movie legend, who has brought us films like "Sands of Iwo Jima" or "the Green Berets". But why is it that those are the figures we conjure up, and why are they all white? This week Josh and Will get a chance to speak with author, professor, and all around super woman, Kristin Kobes Du Mez (Du Mez=‘do’ ‘may’) about her most recent book 'Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation'. They answer some of the aforementioned questions by examining her book and learn more about the role that evangelicals played in crafting this idea of manhood.
    Guest Bio:
Kristin Kobes Du Mez is Professor of History and Gender Studies at Calvin University. She holds a PhD from the University of Notre Dame and her research focuses on the intersection of gender, religion, and politics. She has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, NBC News, Religion News Service, and Christianity Today, and has been interviewed on NPR, CBS, and the BBC, among other outlets. Her most recent book is Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation.
