Show notes

We’re here for satisfaction ONLY on this episode of Fairy Tale Fix. In pursuit of a magical horse story that actually contains a magical horse Abbie tells the Russian folktale The Straw Horse. Kelsey follows up with The Witches on the Lake, from Scotland, and while the end of the story itself is trash we think you’ll find we fixed it pretty perfectly.

55: Thumbelina: Not Like Other Girls (ft. Sequoia Simone) Jan 03, 2023

Show notes

We are joined by a very special guest, Sequoia Simone of podcasts But Make It Scary and Fanatical Fics and Where to Find Them! Sequoia keeps our “wintertime is for Hans Christian Andersen” theme going with the very cute story of Thumbelina, which surprises us by how NOT sad it is, and Abbie tells the Chinese story of Li Chi Slays The Serpent.

54: The Little Mermaid: Hot Legs Dec 13, 2022

Show notes

It’s sad bisexual boy Christmastime and Kelsey & Abbie deliver an ocean-sized episode with one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most popular tales, The Little Mermaid.

53: I Don’t Speak Poor Nov 22, 2022

Show notes

Abbie & Kelsey record an episode of Fairy Tale Fix IN PERSON! Together! In the same room!! We have a ton of fun recording under a big blanket fort in Abbie’s house, and Kelsey rolls some dice for her story, Dough, which is a very random tale about a witch’s obsession with an eternal dough-based object, probably. Abbie reads from A Book of Magic Horses and rolls dice for a tale called Master Billy, which leaves us very disappointed and wondering… where is the magic horse!?

52: U Mad Bro? Nov 07, 2022

Show notes

STRAP IN FOR THIS ONE. These might be the worst tales we’ve ever told on the podcast, so please heed the trigger warnings. Very special guest and longtime listener Angel from Fantastic Worlds Pod joins us to tell us the ghostly tale of La Llorona, and Abbie tells the worst story we’ve ever heard on the pod–Don’t Get Mad. Spoiler alert, you’re gonna get mad.

51: The Final Girls Episode Oct 25, 2022

Show notes

Just in time for Halloween, Abbie & Kelsey find some folk tales featuring two brave and cunning final girls. Kelsey reads The Skull, a spooky tale about a disembodied (non-floating) skull with a twist! And Abbie reads a Seneca folk tale, The Vampire Skeleton, that needs to become the latest indigenous horror hit following Prey (are you listening, Hollywood?).

50: Sausage On Sausage Violence Oct 11, 2022

Show notes

Spooky season begins on Fairy Tale Fix! Kelsey reads a haunting tale called The Leg of Gold from Ruth Manning-Sanders’ A Book of Ghosts & Goblins, generously donated by a friend of the pod Chris Otto, followed by an...interesting (gross) story called The Strange Feast by the Brothers Grimm. Abbie reads the chilling yet charming story of The Goblins at the Bath House, also from A Book of Ghosts and Goblins.

49: Sweet Selkie Nips (ft. Aloreing) Sep 27, 2022

Show notes

This week’s episode is very ~aloreing~ and features some very special guests! Kimmy and Ryan from the comedy folklore & cryptid podcast Aloreing join us to talk creatures and cryptids found in fairy and folk tales (when we can find them). Will their prior knowledge of Jezinkas and Kelpies help them better predict the endings of these classic folk tales? Kelsey reads a story featuring Jezinkas which are evil forest witch maidens called Smolicheck: The Story of a Little Boy Who Opened the Door, and Abbie reads a couple of short stories about Water Horses. Listen to more of Kimmy & Ryan at Aloreing.com.

48: Cats Are Always Magic Sep 13, 2022

Show notes

At last, an episode all about talking cats (sort of)! Abbie cracks open a new book to tell the Japanese tale of the Vampire Cat of Nabeshima, which is pretty much just as cool as it sounds. After, Kelsey brings you the adorable palate cleanser The Small, Small Cat.

47: Swan Justice Aug 30, 2022

Show notes

We got a new book, River Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland by Lisa Schneidau and it is FILLED with some fantastic stories. Kelsey reads some poetic nonsense that leaves us feeling dreamy with The Stars in the Sky, and Abbie reads a much darker but super cathartic tale The Wounded Swan. Moral of this episode? Don’t eff with swans. Ever.
