    Failing Motherhood

If you’re riddled with mom guilt, your temper scares you, you’re terrified you’re screwing up your kids and are afraid to admit any of those things out loud….this podcast is for you. Hosted by Danielle Bettmann, parenting coach for families with 1-10-year-old strong-willed kids, Failing Motherhood is where shame-free vulnerability meets breakthroughs.
Every other week is a storytelling interview about one mom’s raw and honest experience of growth that leads to new perspectives and practical strategies and every other week solo episodes focus on actionable insight into parenting your deeply feeling, highly sensitive, *spicy* child.
Here, we normalize the struggle, share openly about our insecurities, and rally around small wins and truths. We hope to convince you you’re not alone and YOU are the parent your kids need. We hope you see yourself, hear your story, and find hope and healing.
Welcome to Failing Motherhood. You belong here!

"You know what you signed up for!"
Erin hears this all the time, and she's like, "Just because you knew what you were signing up for, doesn't make it easy- just like parenting. Also, DO WE THOUGH?"
After 4 deployments & 8 moves in 13 years, Erin now knows a thing or two about resiliency, transitions, & having grace.
Her motherhood journey started off with a horrible pregnancy, a traumatic birth, and a real struggle with bonding with her daughter. With her husband's presence becoming a novelty, she navigates uncharted waters for years with barely her head above water.
    Her advice? Be like Gumby.

    16. For the Sake of Our Youth with Tessa Stuckey Aug 18, 2020
    Show notes

Licensed Professional Counselor & mom of 4 boys, Tessa Stuckey is here to share she still doesn't have it all figured out.
BUT- she HAS written a book called "For the Sake of Our Youth: A Therapist's Perspective on Raising Your Family in Today's Culture."
In her work with teens, she began seeing a trend of suicidal ideation in teens with no mental illness. As a mom of littles herself, she wanted to see what was contributing to this huge wave of struggling teens who went to the same high school she did!
She identified 6 cultural influences that affect teenage depression, anxiety, and suicide-ality. She sat down to write an article for a local newspaper and couldn't stop writing.
In our interview, she shares the advice she needed to hear when barely hanging on by a thread with her boys, as well as the advice she's compiled in her book.
She even teaches practical takeaways like "the RESET" and "the TURNAROUND".

    15. Career Mom with Jenny Elliott Aug 11, 2020
    Show notes

Prior to becoming a mom, Jenny Elliott spent over a decade in Corporate America at a Fortune 100 company.
She kept working after becoming a mom.

    THE HORROR!!!!

    Kidding of course.

But boy did she doubt herself. Plus, it's just not that easy. Feeling unprepared for motherhood, Jenny's transition back to work was rocky at best and she experienced an identity crisis when realizing work/life balance doesn't exist.

Feeling like both a failure at work and at home heaped on the mom guilt.

She came to realize a big part of her identity was her career, and that's okay!

She shares the boundaries that have kept her sane in work-from-home COVID times, how she's endured her identity crisis, and the story behind creating her podcast, Career Mom.

    14. Embracing Homeschool & Raising Daughters with Rebecca & Alaina Walsh Aug 02, 2020
    Show notes

Rebecca Walsh never intended to stay home with her kids.
She was dead set AGAINST homeschooling.
Now, her 16-year-old daughter Alaina joins her to share their journey of homeschooling full time. She shares her fears of lack of socialization, the curriculum overwhelm, figuring out how to manage a routine rather than a schedule, and so many other lessons learned along the way.
    Highlights from their advice:

    • Teach them to learn & enjoy learning rather than focus on teaching ALL.THE.THINGS.
    • Many kids don't learn like yours, and that's okay.
    • Find a place to get away.
    • Focus on your relationship first and foremost.
    • Flexibility is the name of the game.

Rebecca & Alaina have created a podcast together to nurture mother/daughter relationships. Together they believe it's not a friendship- it's BETTER, and the more a daughter knows her mom, the stronger the daughter.
We get a vulnerable look at what that looks like at their house.
Moms of daughters - take notes!

She shares the in's & out's of loving someone in an active addiction and how she found the answers and community she so desperately needed.

    • The idea that I couldn't be happy if the people around me aren't happy
    • Relying on other people and their actions to affect your happiness too

She learned that by putting herself first, she could be a better mom and better partner, and wants to be there for you!

    11. Becoming a Fierce Advocate with Kristin Roth Jul 14, 2020
    Show notes

One of every mama's biggest fears is a life-altering medical diagnosis for their child.
Kristin Roth details her journey from woozy with wounds to fierce mama bear. Both of her sons have been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and she was trained by firehouse with the high stakes protocol to keep their levels regulated.
"You are essentially trying to be a human pancreas with the tools of a blood sugar meter, syringes and 2 vials of different types of insulin. The pancreas does not "sleep" so you can't either...well, at least not straight through the night. The pressure, lack of sleep and the fact that those first few months are some of the most difficult to manage are a recipe for extreme anxiety, overwhelm, and depression. Like many situations, you may feel very supported right after the diagnosis, but as the weeks and months go on, the support and encouragement fade."
"Now I look back and I realize I was trying to control my sons more than I was trying to control the disease."
For any mama sacrificing and serving the unique needs of their child, I hope you heed Kristin's advice.
For any families experiencing a new diagnosis of diabetes in their family, connect with Kristin!
Kristin Roth is the founder and head coach of T1D Caregiver Kickstart, an online coaching program for parents of newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetic children. She helps them bridge the gap from diagnosis to confident caregiver while prioritizing their own self care.

    10. BIG truths from a BAD Mom with Arianna Bradford Jul 07, 2020
    Show notes

Headphones on, friends. We're getting real (and sweary).
Brace yourself for the belly laughs you need right now.
Arianna Bradford felt like she was failing motherhood so much she created the Not Your Average Mom Project and wrote a book about it that fights back.
    She believes...
...being human is not a reason to be ashamed.
...we can't be good at something we've never done before.
...there's no such thing as getting it ALL.DONE.
...mom guilt doesn't mean we've done something wrong.
...there's nothing special or magical about running yourself ragged.
...we're going to screw up our kids. And we have to get over it.
We lament how hard it is to make friends, that pants are a conspiracy, how she'd rather be Batman than Wonder Woman (he has a social life and a much warmer wardrobe), and many other "truths" about motherhood.
You need this interview (and her new book) in your life.
