    Experience 50 Podcast for Midlife

Men and women in midlife are drawn to Mary Rogers’ honest take on the experiences of the empty nest, aging parents, spending an inheritance, dating and sex, travel, downsizing things, trashing bad habits and figuring out who you want to be now that you really are all almost grow up.

The podcast is always smart, usually funny, and occasionally painfully real in speaking to the cusp of GenX and Baby Boomers.

E072 What The Hell Happened -Mary Keyes Rogers Aug 18, 2016
    Show notes

I'd rather not think of this as a rant, but some time taken to look at what the hell went wrong. I'm happy to be responsible for my own happiness, thank you very much. I'm never going to tell somebody else how to be happy, because how would I possibly know?

But I do see, that as a country, we are self-reporting high numbers of unhappiness, and I for one am starting to connect the dots between what we value as a society, and as individuals, compared to what science shows us results in lifelong happiness and there is a huge disconnect.

The good news is that once we turn 50, we seem to start seeing this disconnect in how we spend our time and money and have time to change our ways.

Here are but a few reflections on how the world worked 40 years ago that I can now honestly say... I miss.

    • We showed self-respect and respect for others through our appearance.
    • Stores and businesses were closed on Sundays and major holidays.
    • News was not editorial, nor a 24/7 commercial enterprise relying upon profits.
    • Education was valued for learning about our world and not just how to earn a living.
    • Children were not idolized.
    • Life was much more simple.

I'd love to read your thoughts on this as well. What else from the "good Old Days" should make a comeback?

    E069 Mark VanderKlipp's Badass Midlife Pivot Jul 14, 2016
    Show notes

"Everyday since I left my job has been awesome. Just awesome", says Mark Vanderklipp, 51.

He joins Experience 50 host Mary Rogers to discuss his midlife pivot on The Experience 50 Podcast giving inspiration and advice to others feeling the urge to pivot themselves. No midlife crisis needed.

Mark VanderKlipp's story of a professional pivot at midlife. Why he isn't freaking out.

At the top of his game, midlifer Mark VanderKlipp resigned from his position as president of an employee-owned wayfinding design firm without knowing exactly what would follow. What he did know was that he was ready to move on.

Mark had become passionate about a new discipline and he resigned. Yikes! He was drawn to the chance to combine his passion with his purpose and there was no looking back.

Would he begin a job search? Start a new business and hire employees? Go solo and consult? As Mark tells Mary and her listeners, "Anything is possible."

Having recently survived prostate cancer and completing a successful run in the Boston Marathon, Mark was becoming more comfortable with challenging himself in uncharted territory. He and his wife Suzanne are about to become empty nesters, and with an increased value for quality of life and personal/professional development, the decision to take that leap of faith was easier than you might expect. Early retirement? Hardly! He is taking a leap of faith that he can do the work he loves, stay true to his passion and create a lifestyle that honors his values and love of life.

In this episode Mary Rogers speaks with Mark VanderKlipp on:

    • surviving cancer
    • the fear and exhilaration of taking a leap of faith
    • the first day of "non"employment
    • how to decide if self-employment/consulting is for you
    • the importance of building and utilizing networks
    • the adrenalin rush of change

E063 The Greatest Gift To Leave Your Family May 10, 2016
    Show notes

If you love your family, please document your end of life wishes for your own passing. The shock and grief when a loved one dies is overwhelming. To have to try to recall or imagine what your family member's final wishes would have been is nearly impossible. Your judgement is poor, you find it difficult to make decisions and this is exactly the shape you do NOT want to leave your family in when you pass.

Chris Hill is on a mission to save family members from the situation he found himself in when his mother died. Nobody knew what she wanted. What type of service? What songs? Burial or cremation? What did she want to be dressing in, jewelry?

If you pay in advance or not, having pre-planned your funeral is indeed the greatest gift you can leave your family. There are downloadable guides, or just talk with your family or a funeral director.

Chris Hill and Mary discuss the importance of:

    • considering the decisions that need to be made quickly
    • communicating/documenting your wishes
    • talking to your adult children
    • how to discuss your parent's wishes
    • creating a Love Drawer
