219: The Oslo Plaza Woman | Norway Nov 10, 2024

June 3rd, 1995, the Oslo Plaza Hotel witnessed a chilling incident that remains one of Norway's greatest unsolved mysteries. Security guard Espen Nass discovered the lifeless body of a woman, identified as Jennifer Fairgate, in room 2805. Initially deemed a suicide, unusual evidence suggested otherwise. Nearly 30 years on, her identity remains a mystery, much like the unsolved cases of the Isdal Woman and the Cambo Man.

The Freeway Killer was a collective epithet given by the media and the police to what the media initially believed was a single serial killer claiming young male victims, predominantly in California during the 1970s and early 1980s, and who often discarded the victims' bodies alongside freeways.
However, there turned out to be multiple Freeway Killers who operated independently of each other but just happened to select similar victims from similar locations.

206: The Solved Cold Case Murder of Carmen Kampa | Germany Feb 05, 2023

Looking out of the train window, a witness saw a large man striking a young woman, then forcing both his hands on her shoulders so she couldn’t get back up. The witness opened the train window and heard the young woman screaming: “Please, don’t! Please don’t!” The train passenger shouted for the attacker to stop, but the train was already moving. By the time police arrived at the scene, there was no trace of the crime. Then, three days later they found Carmen’s body. For years the case that was witnessed by multiple train passengers remained unsolved, but thanks to the determination of a prosecutor and a cold case team – it was solved 40 years later.

Between 1968 and 1969, Patricia Docker, Jemima McDonald and Helen Puttock all fell victim to a serial killer who told people his name was John. Witnesses claimed he was in the habit of quoting scripture, which gave him the nickname ‘Bible John’. In December 2004, 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett of Skidmore Missouri was excited about having her first baby. At eight months pregnant, she was still active in the rat terrier show circuit and met someone who had a diabolical plan: she wanted Bobbie Jo’s baby. Lisa Montgomery catfished the unsuspecting Bobbie Jo, setting up a meeting, posing as ‘Darlene Fischer’, pretending she wanted to buy a puppy. Bobbie Jo let her acquaintance into her home, and after a violent struggle she was dead, and her baby had been cut from her womb. Fortunately, law enforcement caught up with Lisa Montgomery, and found baby Victoria Jo alive.

In November 2014, Sony Pictures fell victim to a massive cyber-attack. This attack was in retaliation to the release of the film The Interview, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco – a comedy about a plot to assassinate the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un.
In February 2016, the central bank of Bangladesh suffered a similar attack. The meticulously planned cyber-heist spanned multiple countries, using different time zones, and leveraging public holidays and loopholes in country-specific laws. The FBI believed that a North Korean, state-sponsored, hacking organisation called The Lazarus Group was responsible for both cyber-attacks. But what can be done to stop them from doing it again?

Between 1917 and 1922, the residents of a small French town were terrorised by an anonymous letter writer who exposed secrets and made allegations. Each letter was signed: ‘The Eye of the Tiger’. The rumour mill was churning at a diabolical rate – careers ended, marriages became strained and eventually, two people lost their lives. Investigators took five years to unmask the author, a local secretary by the name of Angèle Laval. This poison pen letter case became known as the Raven of Tulle Affair.

Alexander ‘Sasha’ Spesivtsev lured women and children into his Soviet-style apartment. He tortured, raped and murdered them. When his mother found the corpses, she took it upon herself to dismember them and dispose of them piece by piece in the Aba River. Smaller pieces were made into soups and stews that mother and son enjoyed together. Their dog always had a human bone, cut from the latest victim to chew on. Suffering constant sexual assault and abuse, she managed to flee from her husband, to the disgrace of her family. She fell in love with one of the gang members, but he was killed in gang related conflict. She was kidnapped and gang raped over a period of three weeks. When she escaped, she got her own gang together. They marched into the village where she was kept captive and took 30 men, lined them up on the riverbank and shot them all. Although she surrendered and served 11 years in prison, Phoolan Devi did not stop fighting for justice.
