    Show notes

The Florida State Seminoles have remained perfect through their first nine game of the season. After securing the win Saturday over Pittsburgh, the Seminoles immediately turned their attention to their next opponent, their rivals from down south, the Miami Hurricanes.

Each week, as part of our Line of Scrimmage series, we’ll be speaking with members of the beat that covers FSU’s upcoming opponent, getting all the details from those who know those teams best.

To help fans get to know the 2023 version of the ‘Canes, we’ll breakdown the Miami roster and season with Adam Lichtenstein of the Sun Sentinel.

The Hurricanes have already improved from last season with six wins on the year. Last week, saw Miami stumble in a slugfest with the NC State Wolfpack. Miami will be coming into Saturday’s matchup looking to end the Seminole’s perfect season. And the Hurricanes certainly have talent on both sides of the ball to pull off the upset.

FSU handles business, clinches spot in ACC Championship ahead of showdown with Hurricanes -- will Seminoles face off against Louisville Cardinals in title game? Pitt win recap, Miami preview and more Nov 06, 2023
    Show notes

The Florida State Seminoles are heading back to the ACC Championship Game for the first time since 2014 after their 24-7 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers.

The Noles were able to handle business against an outmatched Pitt team without their top two offensive weapons in wide receivers Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson, both missing the game. Even without those stars, Jordan Travis utilized Ja’Khi Douglas and the tight ends.

This week, the Seminole Wrap crew — Brian Pellerin and Ben Meyerson without the still vacationing Jon Marchant — discuss the victory, its impact on Jordan’s pursuit of the Heisman Trophy and an early preview of potential ACC Championship Game opponents as Louisville grabbed control of second place.

Plus, Brian and Ben react to the first College Football Playoff rankings released last week and what it could mean for Florida State’s path to the final four — and, of course, what can we expect from the Miami Hurricanes in this week’s rivalry game.

College Football Week 10: Picks, predictions and daily fantasy plays as Playoff race tightens Nov 03, 2023
    Show notes

Have you or a loved one fallen victim to emotional frustration, confusion or exasperation at the hand of the latest College Football Playoff rankings?

On Tuesday when the rankings came out, as they revealed Oklahoma behind Alabama at No. 9 and 8 respectively I didn’t bat an eye.

Then, they revealed Texas ahead of Alabama at No. 7 and the ESPN panelists began talking about how great of a job the committee did a superb job because Texas beat Bama head-to-head. But nobody had a problem with Oklahoma being two spots behind Texas who they beat?

I got frustrated with the hypocrisy of it all and the complete sham all of it is and then I remembered a simple fact — How often have we thought at the end of the year the committee truly got it wrong?

More or less, it all works out in the end.

I mean at this point, we haven’t played the first weekend of November yet. There’s more than a month of meaningful football to go before we even make it to the conference championship games.

It always finds a way to sort itself out.

At the end of the day, this year will too.

We’ve seen plenty of examples this year that teams with holes are finding losses (UNC, namely, but others too). We’ve got plenty of opportunities for teams to find more losses starting this weekend with multiple top-ten teams on the road — two of them facing ranked teams themselves.

Don’t fret. We’ll all find the four best teams in December. Until then, enjoy the greatest sport in the world.

FSU vs. Pitt breakdown: Inside look at Panthers as Seminoles look to clinch spot in ACC Championship Nov 03, 2023
    Show notes

The Florida State Seminoles sit at a perfect 8-0 on the season after their victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons this past Saturday. The Seminoles jumped out early before cruising to an easy 41-16 win.

This weekend, FSU heads north for a showdown with the Pittsburgh Panthers. It’s been a rough season for the Panthers and head coach Pat Narduzzi. After opening the season with a victory, the Panthers have struggled to only one additional win on the season. Heading into Saturday, Pitt stands at a record of 2-6 with a tough four game stretch (including Florida State) to finish the season. Can the Panthers turn their season around on Saturday with a win over the Seminoles? We’ll discuss that more with Corey Cohen of the Pitt Talk Network.

Each week, as part of our Line of Scrimmage series, we’ll be speaking with members of the beat that covers FSU’s upcoming opponent, getting all the details from those who know those teams best.

Entering this season Pat Narduzzi had compiled a 62-41 record at Pitt, with his worst season being 6-5 in 2020. The Panthers came in as a possible dark horse for the ACC championship game but this season has been far from successful. Phil Jurkovec went from NFL draft prospect just two-three years ago to demotion, the Panthers are 2-6. High level, what has gone wrong for Pitt?

Let’s focus on the quarterback position (if not covered already). Jurkovec transfers in from Boston College and was rather abysmal with a 50% completion percentage. He was moved to tight end and Christian Veilleux has been behind center since the Louisville game. What happened to Jurkovec and tell the fans what to expect from Veilleux?

The backfield is a two-headed monster in C’Bo Flemister and Rodney Hammond Jr. The two backs are pretty close in carries and yards but do they have similar styles on the field?

The Panthers have a pair of talented wide receivers in Konata Mumpfield and Bub Means. But for the first time this year, I think FSU is facing a pretty legitimate tight end receiving threat as well in Gavin Bartholomew. How might we see Pitt get these three involved on Saturday?

Finally on offense, let’s take a look at the line. The big guys have allowed 16 sacks on the season and only allowed the Panther to average 3.5 yards on the ground. It’s a young offensive line with four underclass men and one senior. Where has this line struggled and is there an area they’ve been successful?

Flipping over to defense, it’s a defensive line that has accounted for 14 of the team’s 23 sacks. The Panthers appear to have a decent rotation on the inside with David Green, Deandre Jules and others while Dayon Hayes and freshman Samuel Okunlola are the names to know on the ends. What has allowed this group to have success in the backfield and is there an area teams have found success against this defensive line?

Solomon DeShields leads this linebacking corp. On paper, this has shown to be a solid group stats wise and PFF grades wise. How would this group grade so far?

Let’s jump back to the secondary. Donovan McMillon is the safety that flies over the field making the tackles while Phillip O’Brien and MJ Devonshire have split four interceptions on the season at cornerback. This appears to be a solid group. How will they stack up against Keon Coleman and the talented Seminole receivers?

And finally, thoughts on how Saturday plays out

FSU blows out Wake Forest: Was that Florida State's best performance of 2023? Breaking down Seminoles win, playoff outlook, Heisman race Oct 30, 2023
    Show notes

Another week, another win for the Florida State Seminoles.

The Noles have put in some strong efforts this season, but Saturday’s road victory may have been their best this year. Quarterback Jordan Travis put on a show with more than 300 total yards — 273 passing and 38 rushing — and 4 total touchdowns in the first half. Travis’ first half was more than the FSU defense allowed the Demon Deacons in the entire game.

Overall, it was a dominant effort for Florida State on the road against an overmatched team.

On this week’s episode, the Seminole Wrap crew — Brian Pellerin and Ben Meyerson with a guest appearance from Perry Kostidakis in Jon’s place — discuss Jordan Travis announcing himself in the Heisman conversation, the early signs of Trey Benson’s resurgence and Adam Fuller’s defense looking the best they have in the Mike Norvell era.

Plus, we look at the big games impacting the ACC Championship and College Football Playoff picture. The Noles now have a clear shot to Charlotte and likely to the CFP if they run the table.

FSU is 8-0: Mike Norvell interview after Florida State Seminoles win big over Wake Forest Oct 28, 2023
    Show notes

No. 4 Florida State, despite a dominant defensive performance in the first quarter, found themselves ahead just 10-7 at the start of the second.

By halftime, that lead had exploded to 34-7.

The Seminoles' defense didn’t buckle for the bulk of the first half, effectively forcing garbage time by the third quarter because of how effectively Florida State was able to shut down what Wake Forest was attempting to do. The Demon Deacons got 70 yards on two plays — and then 11 on all others.

Florida State came right out and scored to start off the game on offense, with Jordan Travis finishing things off on the ground with his 30th rushing touchdown all-time for FSU, but stalled for two straight drives before converting a field goal towards the end of the first and finding paydirt in the second via a Travis to Keon Coleman reception.

After one more punt, Florida State reeled off three straight scores — an 80-yard screen to Trey Benson, another wild catch by Coleman and a field goal from Ryan Fitzgerald — to effectively put the game away heading into halftime.

The third quarter was relatively quiet for both teams, with Wake Forest adding on a field goal in addition to getting a penalty-aided 80-yard drive to earn another touchdown while Florida State tacked another touchdown on the board by way of Benson.

The starters were able to sub out midway through the fourth, with the game out of reach at 41-16.

College Football Week 9 Picks, DFS Plays & Podcast: FSU-Wake, Utah-Oregon, Duke-Louisville lead battle for conference positioning Oct 27, 2023
    Show notes

The Pac-12 is the gift that keeps on giving this year.

They’re absolutely stacked with fun teams that seem to all play completely different styles and this week. Everybody has varying degrees of the same strengths and the same weaknesses. Almost all of them are really good offenses with terrible to above average defenses.

Then there’s Utah. The Utes are missing their starting quarterback Cam Rising who seems destined to take this year as a medical redshirt as he works his way back from a torn ACL in last season’s Rose Bowl. And yet, they keep winning.

    Why? The defense is elite.

So elite they were able to bring along former Utah pig farmer Bryson Barnes to a pretty decent QB. Safety Sione Vake has become a star RB the last two weeks and they’re right there in the mix for the Pac-12 title game and a playoff spot.

In their way this week is perhaps the only other Pac-12 defense I trust in Oregon. The Ducks aren’t quite Utah good on defense, but they make up for it with an offense that isn’t quite Washington good but pretty close.

Elsewhere, the Pac-12 also treats us to Colorado at UCLA and Oregon State at Arizona as wonderfully fun contests to feed us football late into the night.

Thank you to our west coast friends for taking this last season together with a bang. Us east coast college football sickos appreciate it more than we can ever show.

FSU vs. Wake Forest breakdown: How do Florida State Seminoles, Wake Forest Demon Deacons matchup? feat. Cam Lemons Oct 25, 2023
    Show notes

The Florida State Seminoles have started a perfect 7-0 on the season after their primetime win over the Duke Blue Devils. This Saturday, the Seminoles will travel to Winston-Salem to take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Each week, as part of our Line of Scrimmage series, we’ll be speaking with members of the beat that covers FSU’s upcoming opponent, getting all the details from those who know those teams best.

Wake Forest is coming off a victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers that snapped a three-game losing streak. Through the first seven games, the Demon Deacons have battled injuries and experience to notch out a 4-3 record. Similar to last week’s matchup with Duke, Wake Forest has question marks of their own at quarterback headed into Saturday’s game as both starter Mitch Griffis and backup Michael Kearn missed the last week with injuries. Can the Demon Deacon offense control the pace of the game and keep this one close? We’ll discuss this and more with Cam Lemons of the Demon Deacons Digest.

FSU remains undefeated after comeback win vs. Duke -- more reasons to panic or be confident in Florida State Seminoles football after the win? Oct 23, 2023
    Show notes

With a dominant second half, the Florida State Seminoles survived a scare from a banged-up Riley Leonard and a stout Duke Blue Devils defense to remain unbeaten on the season.

From failed fourth-down attempts early in the game to a dominant fourth quarter, the Seminoles played a contest filled with ups and downs on both sides of the ball. The defense pitched a second-half shutout but had issues containing the Duke run game early. The offense struggled on their designed run game but found success with the legs of Jordan Travis.

So were there more reasons to panic or be confident in FSU after the win?

The Seminole Wrap crew — Brian Pellerin, Ben Meyerson and Jon Marchant — discuss that and how important the injury to Riley Leonard was to the ultimate result of the game. Plus with UNC’s loss to Virginia, is Florida State destined to be playing in the ACC Championship Game?
