Jace Everett, True Blood: "I want to do Bad Things with you" Nov 18, 2020
    Show notes

On this Jace Everett interview, Jace talks about finding Jesus at a young age, and then "opting out" of religion... dropping out of the music business for 5 years to raise his son and provide for his family... losing his publishing deal, his record deal and going through a miserable divorce - all at once!… Backstory to his new records, favorite song he wrote (NOT what you're thinking), being a dad, understanding how others hear him (and don't hear him), forgiveness, France, loads more. SUPER cool and intelligent guy

Jace Everett dropped out of Belmont University to become a full-time musician. He then moved to France, had a son, then dropped out of the music business for 5 years. Made a bro country album that flopped - but it did have a song called "Bad Things" on it. In 2008 HBO stumbled upon "Bad Things" and made the song the theme to "True Blood." Since then, Jace has made 6 full length albums and an EP as an independent artist. He's toured all over the world, has dozens of sync placements in film, TV & ads... cuts with artists from Nashville, Texas, Canada, Norway, Australia and the UK. He has 2 new records , "Lost in the Flood" created with Norwegian guitarist Amund Maarud, and an Ambient record called YLEM. Both albums are great

    Gary Hoey Nov 17, 2020
    Show notes

On this Gary Hoey interview: why he's a Black Belt in Martial Arts, hustling in front of Berklee, his audition for Ozzy, moving across the country from Massachusetts to LA… Writing his absolute biggest hit in 15 minutes, Chet Atkins, Judge Judy, and a TON of really cool stuff to enjoy in this fun conversation!...

One of my all-time favorite guitar players, Gary's released 22 albums in the last 23 years… has had five top-20 Billboard hits… has recorded songs for the largest companies in America… and today, teaches Masterclasses at Berklee - a school he desperately wanted to attend when he was a teenager. Raised by a single mother of 6, Gary's come a l-o-o-n-g way yet has managed to retain every ounce of his humility and compassion for people.

    Show notes

On this Glenn Worf interview: His perseverance and work ethic and how it took him WAY beyond where he imagined… Quitting college and moving to Nashville because, "You have to be willing to fail to get better…" Early struggles trying to get his session career going, working with Kevin Welch, Bob Seger, Patti Griffin (very cool story), Buddy Guy & Mark Knopfler… Coping with a significant health issue his wife has, "perfect plumb," hearing both sides of the story, seeing the beauty in as much as you can, and more. Very kind and open, lovely story

Glenn Worf started his Nashville career as a touring bassist but quit traveling to concentrate on studio work. He's worked with iconic Country artists like Willie Nelson, George Jones, Emmy Lou Harris, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Jerry Douglas, Allison Krauss, Lee Roy Parnell, Kenny Rogers, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Randy Travis, Brent Mason, Steve Wariner, Reba, Trace Adkins, Mac McAnally & many others. Rock & pop artists like Mark Knopfler, Bob Seger, Don Henley, Sheryl Crow, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Buddy Guy, Joan Baez, Aaron Neville & others. Career high water mark has been recording and touring with Knopfler since 1993 - he's played on every solo Knopfler LP. RARE, Richard Bennett: Mark Knopfler (26 years), Neil Diamond (17 years) Nov 13, 2020
    Show notes

On this Richard Bennett interview, GREAT stories about playing with Mark Knopfler, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, Helen Reddy, Jim Stafford, Glen Campbell, Steve Earl, Al Casey… his unique approach to writing and recording, a difficult low point that found Richard struggling for almost a year, becoming a top producer and realizing he had to stop… how he went from playing dingy beer joints at 14, to playing on the most desirable sessions and touring the world, by "falling forward"... favorite musicians he's enjoyed playing with, and the ONE musician who taught him more than he could ever have imagined… 2 toughest decisions he's ever made, humility, kindness, eating well and carrying less on your shoulders. INCREDIBLE conversation, what a lovely guy

Richard Bennett is THE most successful side man I've had on this show. He's also as humble as he is talented. He's been Mark Knopfler's guitar player in the studio and on the road since 1994 (26 yrs), and spent 17 years before that as Neil Diamond's guitar player - again, both studio and touring. Here's a very small sample of the people he's played with since his first session in 1968. Bear in mind, for most of these artists, Richard played on several to many of their records: Eric Anderson, Big Al Anderson, Al Casey, David Cassidy, Partridge Family, Steve Earl, Vince Gill, Billy Joel, Dave Mason, Mac McAnally, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Lee Roy Parnell, Helen Reddy, Jim Stafford, Nancy Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Weird Al, Duane Eddy, Glen Campbell, the Ventures & about a dozen soundtracks including The Wrecking Crew documentary and one of my favorite movies, Westworld. He's also produced LOADS of records for major artists, and released 6 excellent instrumental CDs of his own.

Andreas Kisser, Sepultura Nov 12, 2020
    Show notes

LOADS of stories here! Andreas talks about growing up in Sao Paolo and sharing the grittier side of Brazil with the rest of the world. The period of confusion when one of the original founding members of Sepultura left, playing in the states for the first time, and how the American metal community welcomed Sepultura… Keeping his life in balance… Staying grounded, even amongst the (sometimes false) trappings of wealth and success… and learning to be more tolerant and accepting…

FANTASTIC call with an incredibly passionate player with an extremely high level of awareness, intelligence, and respect for the world around him...

James Valentine, Maroon 5, "Music is not a competition..." Nov 10, 2020
    Show notes

Double Grammy winner James Valentine wasn't even sure if he was going to stay in music, when his band unexpectedly won a regional Battle of The Bands contest, beating out 6,000 other bands. Band members took the $25,000 prize money and moved to LA from Lincoln, Nebraska & James' destiny was forever changed. How James hooked up with Adam Levine and the rest of the guys from Maroon 5… the toughest decision he ever had to make, and how it impacted his career… his Ernie Ball Signature Guitar… really smart advice for the budding musician… meditation… and some great advice he learned from his parents.

Amazing conversation with this bright, thoughtful and introspective player who's as grounded as it gets
