This film differs a lot from the novel, and is controversial among Jane Austen purists. Just like, Persuasion (2022) Stephanie and Brian discuss it all and this time might tolerate it more... Netflix's "The Lady's Companion" (2025) May 04, 2025

In today's episode listen to Stephanie discuss the new Netflix show, "The Lady's Companion" or "Manual para Senoritas." This 8 episode Spanish Romantic Comedy Period Drama premiered March 28th and is a fun time (especially after recovering from all the Tudor Era content).

The Lady's Companion is set in 1880s Madrid and follows Elena Bianda who is a chaperone before girls get married. She's constantly looking for a new job as her turnover is so great. Then she thinks she hit the jackpot when she finds a home with three daughters who have recently lost their mother. She just didn't except to fall in love with one of their potential suitors...

If you like enemies to lovers, forbidden love, betrayal and lots of drama then look no further. You'll find yourself laughing one moment and then crying the next. The Lady's Companion is Spanish speaking and there is an English dub available. If you are a fan of Bridgerton and telenovelas, then this is for you!

"The Spectacular" by Fiona Davis w/ Dahlia Hamza Constantine Apr 06, 2025

Welcome back to another Virtual Book Club episode! This time Stephanie and returning guest, Dahlia Hamza Constantine, are discussing "The Spectacular" by Fiona Davis.

"The Spectacular" is set primarily in 1956 New York City with some flashforwards to 1992. Main character, 19 year-old Marion Brooks is a dance teacher in Manhattan and when she loses her job, she tried out to be a Radio City Rockette much to the dismay of her father, sister, and boyfriend. There is also a mystery (crime thriller) element involving "The Big Apple Bomber" who has been terrorizing the citizens for 16 years.

Beware of spoilers in this episode, so be sure to read the book before if you don't want to be spoiled!

The Artful Dodger w/ Drea Mayer Dec 01, 2024

Welcome back to the podcast Drea Mayer in today's conversation about the Hulu TV show "The Artful Dodger," which just announced a second season is coming and will start filming in Australia in 2025! (If only Stephanie and Drea knew about that before this episode was filmed; spoiler alert, they're excited!)

"The Artful Dodger" takes place about 15 years after Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist (but you don't need to know the novel to appreciate this show). It follows Jack Dawkins aka the Artful Dodger (played by Thomas Brodie Sangster) in the 1850s in Australia as he works as a surgeon. He is reunited with Fagan (David Thewlis) who shows up as a prisoner while also navigating a relationship with Lady Belle (Maia Mitchell), the mayor's daughter who wants a career in medicine. Between gore, humor, and romance, this show seems to have it all! Highly recommend if you're looking for a good time.

"Lovely War" & WWI w/ Dahlia Hamza Constantine Sep 08, 2024

Buckle up for an emotional one as Stephanie and returning guest Dahlia Hamza Constantine discuss the second Virtual Book Club pick: Lovely War by Julie Berry.

Lovely War takes place between World Wars I & II as Greek Goddess Aphrodite tells a story to her fellow gods about two couples during WWI. This novel was a rollercoaster of emotions. Whether you read (or listened) to Lovely War or not, be prepared for spoilers as well as a discussion on WWI and historical pieces set during the Great War. It's bound to be an interesting listen no matter if you read the book or not.

Join Stephanie and her guest Emily Heyden discuss the PBS Masterpiece series Downton Abbey with a look back on the show (that ran from 2010-2016) before discussing the recent news of the latest/third movie currently in the works. [Buckle up for spoilers!]

Downton Abbey is the home to the Crawley family as well as the staff who serves them (very much an upstairs/downstairs story). The show starts in 1912 with the sinking of the Titanic and the death of the heir to the Crawley family, which leads to a distant cousin, Matthew Crawley, a member of the working class, to become heir of the estate. From inheritance and maintaining Downton to scandals and WWI, there is so much conflict in the show (and it gets very addicting).

Emily would also like to note how much she loves the yellow labs on this show and can't believe she forgot to mention them :)

It follows James Herriot as he moves to the Dales to work as a veterinarian at Skeldale House with Siegfried and Tristan Farnon as well as Mrs. Hall. As he adapts to the rural country life he also falls for Helen Alderson. If you're looking for a new show to binge and need a stress reliever-look no further!

Hamlet & Ophelia (2018) Apr 07, 2024

In this episode, briefly revisit William Shakespeare's Hamlet before listening to Stephanie discuss the 2018 film Ophelia (starring Daisy Ridley, Naomi Watts, Clive Owen, and George Mackay). Ophelia is a re-imagining of Hamlet through Ophelia's perspective. The film starts with Ophelia (Daisy Ridley) coming to Elsinore Castle as a child with her father and brother. She becomes one of Queen Gertrude's ladies in waiting, and audiences get to watch Ophelia's romance with Hamlet bloom. This film takes a much more feminist lens and re-invents many crucial scenes from the original play (including the ending...). If you are a fan of romance and strong female characters, but are intimidated by Shakespeare, you should still give this film a chance. Ophelia (2018) is available on AMC+ and for purchase on YouTube Premium and Amazon Prime Video.

Miss Scarlet & the Duke w/ Dahlia Hamza Constantine Mar 24, 2024

Join Stephanie and her guest Dahlia Hamza Constantine discuss the PBS Masterpiece Mystery series "Miss Scarlet & the Duke" starring Kate Phillips and Stuart Martin.

Set in Victorian London, Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) wishes to carry on her father's detective agency business while going against what is expected of a woman during this time period. She often goes to an old family friend, William "The Duke" Wellington (Stuart Martin) who works at Scotland Yard. The series just concluded its 4th season earlier this year.

In this episode, Stephanie and Dahlia discuss what they love about the show, how it began vs. where it is now, as well as react to recent news regarding the future of the show and historical mysteries in general. Hope you enjoy!

Note: The Victorian Era spans 63 years starting in Great Britain and Ireland from 1837-1901.
