Thin People Have Heart Attacks Too Mar 09, 2017
    Show notes

Bob Harper, the host of the super awful TV show The Biggest Loser, had a heart attack and everyone is acting as if it was just a case of poor genetics - when it could've just as well been his way of treating his body. This hypocrisy - and the fact that it would've been a completely different conversation had Bob been heavier - is what we tackle in this Episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast. We talk about Health at Every Size, why the way you look is not who you are, how the media would've responded if Tess Holiday had a heart attack and why we always make it about the weight. My favorite Line of the Episode: Losing weight is a flawed premise. Obviously, fake science is everywhere these days and the notion that being thin means being healthier and being heavy means being lazy and unhealthy is soooo devilishly flawed that only the beauty and weight loss industry benefits from it. Studies prove what those who pay for it want it to prove, so be super careful what you believe. Here's the thing: Dieting comes from deep pain. It's understandable that you'd like to cover up the pain with weight loss, but 10 less pounds will never lead you to happiness or wellbeing. Of course, you can quantify weight loss, it's safe, you can't quantify wellbeing, which then feels uncertain. But wellbeing is where it's at. Trust me, I've tried both ways and the one that worked was focusing on how I want to feel. So, how do you want to feel? Do you want to overexercise, restrict, be in complete unbalance or live a good life being free from food? Don't let the media scare you with false science and instead take your power back by focusing on what you truly want and desire for yourself. Let Your Body Autocorrect Itself Feb 28, 2017
    Show notes

It's quite understandable - at least in the bubble of the weight culture that our modern society has created - to freak out when you gain weight. After all, we're being told over and over and over again that gaining weight is a moral wrongdoing, a personal failure and a lack of willpower. It's everything you don't want to be and everything you're definitely not. No thought is being wasted on the possibity that weight gain mightjust be your body autocorrecting itself or that it might point to inner turmoil, to some open wound that is desperately seeking your attention in order to heal. To be clear, gaining weight does not make you a bad person. It does not mean you're stupid, lazy or any of the other insults people who are body fanatics like to throw around. Weight gain is just that: weight gain. However, if you notice that your jeans are getting tighter or the number on your scale is climbing up (why are you still weighing yourself anyway???), you'll probably go into fight or flight mode and no matter how committed you are to the lifestyle of not dieting, most of us will think of and then go back to our savior: dieting. The thing is that that is absolutely the wrong way to go about the change you so desperately desire. Instead of helping you out long-term, diets will work in the short-term and then come back to kick you in the butt: every single time. Like Deb says in this episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast: Diets are like an abusive friend you just won't get rid of. In our conversation, Deb and I tackle this difficult topic of believing that going back on diets will lead to happines and freedom from food. We share that the belief of gaining weight once you stop dieting is a self-fulfilling prophecy and we talk about tools that'll help you to truly break out of diet prison. Finding that "Other Life" – Real stories about finding freedom from food Feb 28, 2017
    Show notes

In this episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast, Deb, Leila and I talk about their stories of struggling with food and truly breaking free. In honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, we share the ups and downs of living in diet prison, living our day-to-day lives in order to lose weight, control food and our bodies - all in the hopes of finding happiness. My favorite line of the episode: How can you be brave if you think you're failure? We also talk about feeling like we weren't sick enough to get help or feeling like a failure in recovery because we didn't do it right in the eyes of others and even our own judgmental selves. We openly discuss the horrors of having an eating disorder, why eating disorders are still being seen as harmless, why losing weight is not the way to a glorious life and what really happens when you start to recover and heal. There's so much greatness in this episode, so go ahead and listen right now. Deb’s got a new blog called “We are more than good enough” and she’s been on a writing roll! Check it out here. What else is there? Feb 14, 2017
    Show notes

You are not your thoughts - even though it often feels that way. Whether you do anything or not, your thoughts will appear. The automatic process of the brain will produce a random string of thoughts that, over time, form beliefs and then create your life. That is not you though. That's not your core. It's not your truth. Knowing that is glorious because then you can begin to get to the real you; the you that isn't bound to early childhood conditioning. The you that isn't tied to beliefs that were formed by listening to the media or the beauty industry. The you that actually touches your soul, your heart and the parts of you that you'd never dared to reveal. Meditating, tapping into your intuition, embodying your body, beginning to unbelieve are great ways to start the process of coming back home. And that is what we're talking about in this week's episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast. Deb’s got a new blog called “We are more than good enough” and she’s been on a writing roll! It Always Comes Back to Food Feb 07, 2017
    Show notes

In this episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast, Leila and I share the challenges of taking great care of yourself, leaving diet prison, being a mom, building a business and ,well, having a life. The truth is that self-care isn’t always the easy choice. When feeling overwhelmed, stressed or like life is throwing you one curveball after the other, it’s easy to put self-care on the back burner. It’s just as easy to go back to old destructive habits when life isn’t going as grand as you’d like. And that is why self-care needs to be a priority, even if it’s just taking one mindful breath a day. The more we practice self-care on a constant basis, the easier it is to then go back to those habits in rocky waters. We also talk about the book The Sell, how eating disorders evolve, why it's funny that mommy painted her face and how you can lift yourself up while breaking a part of yourself down. People Pleasing and Wanting to be Thin Feb 01, 2017
    Show notes

In this episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast, Deb, Leila and I talk about the many ways we try to control people by changing our weight and how we can stop the "need" for people pleasing. I've tried to make people like me more by losing weight for most of my life. I thought I could impress people with my weight loss (and that is really how the whole diet drama started for me) and I did - but instead of being liked more, I lost all of my friends and social contacts. There are many more ways we try to please people with our weight and - surprise - it always backfires. Deb and Leila share their own stories of what losing weight did to their social connections and what happened when they let go of the need to be thin at all costs. If people like us solely for our bodies, then there's something majorly wrong in the relationship. Remember that we are more than our bodies and if we hold on to our bodies as a status symbol, we will ultimately lose because bodies change every single day. We also talk about joy suckers and joy givers, why your life and not your body should be your project and why making food a fight is not going to help anyone. Instead of trying to hide your insecurities by pleasing people, it's important to develop emotional intelligence and use your body as a signal to navigate how you deal with the pressures of life and staying true to yourself. What does it mean to be Feminine in today's world? Jan 24, 2017
    Show notes

In this episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast, Leila and I talk about the Beauty Myth, Feminine ideals, the Feminine Mystique, the divide within the body positive movement and so much more. Even though women all over the world have made great movements toward equality, there's still more work to be done. The more powerful women became, the more the pressures to look a certain way increased. It's not enough to anymore to be a powerful woman (whatever that means to you), you also have to look a certain way, be toned, be thin, have big breasts, a tiny waste and a J-Lo butt. And instead of working with each other, women are still working against each other, hurting each other, judging in other for choosing to live their truth. It's time for all of us to step it up, clean up our own mess and begin to love each other, lift each other up and allow each and every single one of us to be who we want to be. The message Oprah's Weight Watchers' ad sends out to the world Jan 17, 2017
    Show notes

Oprah's Weight Watchers' ads are all over American TVs these days creating more frustration than inspiration in women everywhere. Ever since Oprah got financially involved in the weight loss industry, there's been an outcry amongst those of us who do not dedicate their life to achieving thinness at all costs. Looking at the claims of eternal happiness after the weight is finally off, we have to start directing the world-wide diet conversation in a more profound and healing direction. Oprah has power and she uses it to send a clear message out into the world: no matter how rich and influential you are, no matter how much good you've done throughout your life, no matter how much you have achieved, you're not a whole person until you've finally lost those pounds that you've been trying to lose for decades. Well, messages like this, messages sent by powerful women in the spotlight are extremely dangerous and harmful to women everywhere. The truth is that you can be happy without losing weight. The truth is that you can be fulfilled without being thin. And the truth is that you will not heal your issues with food by going on a weight loss diet. The only thing that happens if you continue to strive for thinness is a bigger gap between you and your body's wisdom. You're detaching more and more from the living and ever-changing frame that is keeping you alive. In this episode of the Escape Diet Prison, we discuss the impacts of influencers' decision to join the weight loss industry's games and what we can do in order to build resilience in ourselves and stop the constant judgment of women that is going on in this world.
