How To Assess Difficult Patients | Scene Safety BSI Feb 08, 2022

Remember that violent patient manikin in EMT class? Or what about the simulated patient under arrest?
Yeah, most EMT courses stick to the basics and rarely present students with a violent patient or patient in custody scenario.
It’s hard to do and time is often limited in class. So instructors have to stick with the basics.
But then you have that shiny new NREMT card and go on your first violent patient call and find patient assessment is anything but your standard head to toe.
This episode of the podcast discusses the violent patients, the ones under arrest and even the ones you think could be violent at any minute.
Plus we talk about the need for more situational awareness given the apparent increase in violence against EMS and Fire crews.

Limiting Patient Choices During Call Overload Jan 19, 2022

When people call 911 and then request transport to a specific hospital. Should EMS honor that request?
Or should we transport to the closest appropriate facility based on the patients signs, symptoms and our suspected clinical picture of the patient?
In NYC they have attempted to take away the choice of facility for a patient due to the call volume and hospital overloading from COVID
Specifically when people are calling for non emergency reasons and just want
a trip to the ED for minor issues or are looking for a COVID test to be done.
This week on the show Jim and Dave talk about this policy and also discuss
how we can be prepared for MCI’s and being the Incident Commander when no one wants the job.
