Educational Duct Tape: An EdTech Integration Mindset

The #EduDuctTape Podcast, hosted by Jake Miller, focuses on viewing #edtech as a tool used to meet goals, address learning standards, and solve problems in the classroom, much as duct tape is used as a tool that solves a plethora of problems in our lives. In each episode, Jake sits down with a different inspiring guest to share and discuss some awesome ideas for using tech in the classroom!

#EduDuctTape Question: How can I formatively assess my students?

    • Pear Deck - "It doesn't feel like an assessment."
      • Available SEL Templates
    • Nearpod
    • Jamboard
      • students respond with or without name on a jam.
      • Knikole recommends:
        • Putting 1 question per frame
        • Using post-it colors strategically (red = I don't get it, yellow = I'm not so sure, green = I'm ready to share)
        • Discussing digital citizenship when using Jamboard
        • We discussed the lack of a revision history on Jamboard. However, it has rolled out in the time since the interview was recorded! See Alice Keeler's article about the Revision History in Jamboard here.
    • Padlet - "you can do so many different things!"
      • Students can respond with text, videos, audio, images, drawings, screencasts, links.... just about anything!
      • The big issue is the limitations of their free plan. For a new user, you'll only get 3 active "walls," but you can archive, delete, or clear them.
      • Individual Pricing or School Pricing
    • Mentimeter - lots of different options (polls, quizzes, word clouds, Q&A, etc)
      • The big issue here is that their free plan only allows 2 question slides and 5 quiz slides per presentation.
      • Here is their education Pricing
    • Formative - great for data and tracking of standards-based mastery
      • Their paid plan adds in student growth tracking
    • Classkick
      • Students can add Audio
      • Teachers can jump into student slides
      • Students can help each other

    • 2 Truths & 1 Lie
    • #EduDuctTape Question: How can we implement technology in the music classroom to engage students in music-learning and music-making?
      • Casey advocates for the use of edtech in order to be culturally relevant for your students
      • Casey's question for himself: "How are my students making music each day"
      • Mobile apps to use as a tuner or as an instrument
      • NearPod
        • Initially, Casey used it all on his teacher screen
        • As time went on and Casey got access to more devices, he increased his use of its formative assessment features
        • Nearpod can still be useful if you're not 1:1, Casey has used with students in groups or in stations
        • The use of Nearpod for data collection across multiple classes and 100s of students was valuable for Casey
        • Nearpod VR allows him to present in a more rich way
          • One of the music education standards involving connecting music to other elements and showing a location relating to the music hits this.
        • Draw It slides to draw rhythms, show compositions, etc. to replace paper processes

    • 2 Truths & 1 Lie
    • Educational Duct Tape Question: How can I build interactivity into my content?
      • "How do you make an interactive lesson?" - making interactivity a focus
      • Classroom setup
      • Questions & Discussion
      • "Whoever is doing the most talking is doing the most learning."
      • Move small groups into Zoom or Google Meet breakout rooms and have them respond (or record takeaways) in a collaborative space like Google Docs, Padlet, Jamboard, etc.
      • "What needs to be happening is connectivity, connection with my kids, . . . and interactivity." - Dee
      • Flipgrid
      • Modeling the risk-taking as a teacher, seeking feedback
      • Pear Deck - student-paced is available, embed things like Jamboards or Flipgrid Topics
      • Seize opportunities for students to share ideas and tips with YOU . . . "Power of Reciprocity"
      • Solve in Time - gamified version of design thinking
        • Cards - SOS (ask 3 before me), (1) Problem, (2) Research, (3) Understand, (4) Solve, (5) sharing cards (different cards for different groups)
        • Technology could be included in a variety of ways
        • Could transition into a robust PBL activity
    • Jake's Additional Interactivity Thoughts:
      • Pear Deck--multiple choice, numbers, text, drawing, draggable, website
      • Nearpod--similar options, multiple-choice autograde, new EdPuzzle-like video feature, drag-and-drop fill-in-the-blank activities, matching pairs activities (match a picture to text), memory tests, the Time to Climb game. An added bonus is that teachers can now choose to allow students to respond to open-ended questions using audio!
      • ClassFlow--all kinds of question types, plus Categorise, Crossword, Flashcards, Labelled Diagram, Matching, Memory Game, Sequencing, Timeline, Venn Diagram, and Word search + gradebook and LMS like features. It's only detriment, possibly, is that it does so much!
      • Formative--multiple choice, multiple selection, true or false, short answer, essay, and Show Your Work (students can draw, type, or even upload an image) + more in the paid version…. Great data
      • Classkick - Students can respond using drawings, highlights, text, images (even from their webcam!) or audio (yup! They can record their voice!).
      • Seesaw--This student work could be a photo, a drawing, an annotated photo (within the drawing tool), a video, a note, audio (within the photo, drawing, or note tool), a link, or an uploaded file.
