Today’s kids are under more stress than ever and when the nervous system is overloaded, focus, emotional control, and calm become much harder. What’s really happening in the brain

    Today’s kids are facing:

    • school pressure and social stress

    • technology overload

    • sleep deprivation

    • nutrient deficiencies

When stress piles up, the brain shifts into fight, flight, or freeze.

    That’s when parents notice:

    • explosive reactions

    • difficulty focusing

    • anxiety or shutdowns

    • emotional outbursts

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

Your child isn’t broken—their nervous system is overloaded.

When we calm the body first, behavior softens and the brain can function more efficiently.

    Why magnesium matters

    Magnesium works best alongside:

    • consistent sleep routines

    • movement and exercise

    • reduced tech overload

Is My Kid Doing This on Purpose? | Emotional Dysregulation in Children | E58 May 02, 2023
    Show notes

Is my child doing it on purpose? It's one of the most common questions parents ask when their child has emotional outbursts, ignores directions, shuts down, or struggles to regulate their emotions. When challenging behaviors happen over and over again, it's easy to wonder whether your child is choosing these behaviors or if something deeper is going on.

The truth is that when parents ask, "Is my child doing it on purpose?" the answer is often more complex than a simple yes or no. Many behaviors that look intentional are actually signs of stress, overwhelm, anxiety, frustration, or nervous system dysregulation. What appears to be defiance may be a child who lacks the skills or capacity to respond differently in that moment.

    Behavior is communication.

Children don't always have the words to express what they're feeling, so their nervous systems often do the talking for them. Understanding the root cause of behavior can completely change how parents respond and help reduce power struggles, frustration, and shame.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Is my child doing it on purpose, or are they struggling to regulate?

    • Why emotional dysregulation can look like defiance or noncompliance

    • What behavior reveals about a child's nervous system

    • How anxiety, stress, and overwhelm influence behavior

    • Practical co-regulation strategies that support lasting change

    • How to respond in ways that build connection instead of conflict

Why do children behave in challenging ways?

Many factors can contribute to behavior, including:

    • Emotional dysregulation

    • Anxiety and chronic stress

    • Executive functioning challenges

    • Sensory sensitivities

    • Nervous system overload

    • Difficulty expressing emotions and needs

When we only focus on stopping behavior, we often miss the message underneath it.

Calm the brain first. Everything else follows.

When parents understand what's driving behavior, they can shift from punishment and frustration to connection, support, and skill-building.

What happens when we change the question?

Instead of asking, "Is my child doing it on purpose?" try asking:

    • What is my child struggling with right now?

    • What is their nervous system communicating?

    • What support do they need to be successful?

    • How can I help them regulate before I correct?

These simple shifts can transform the way parents understand behavior and strengthen their relationship with their child.

Is Lyme Disease Impacting Your Child's Brain? | Emotional Dysregulation in Children | E57 May 01, 2023

Lyme Disease and Your Child’s Brain: How to Recognize the Signs and Support Their Healing

If your child is struggling with sudden mood changes, memory problems, or unexplained anxiety, it can feel overwhelming—and you might feel powerless. You’re not alone.

Lyme disease is more than just a tick bite—it can affect the brain, behavior, and learning in ways that are often misunderstood. In this episode, Dr. Roseann unpacks how Lyme disease impacts the nervous system, what signs to watch for, and actionable steps to protect and support your child.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • how Lyme disease affects the brain and behavior

    • the signs parents should watch for in their children

    • why early intervention is crucial for better outcomes

    • actionable strategies to support your child’s nervous system

What’s really happening in the brain

Lyme disease can be sneaky. Symptoms may appear months or even years after a tick bite, and it often affects the nervous system.

Neurological Lyme disease can trigger neuroinflammation, which may cause:

    • headaches, dizziness, or brain fog

    • memory issues and learning difficulties

    • mood changes like anxiety or depression

    Takeaways for parents:

    • Watch for subtle signs like headaches, irritability, or sudden learning challenges

    • Behavior is communication—meltdowns or attention difficulties can signal stress

    • Early recognition matters—prompt treatment can prevent long-term impacts

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

When Lyme disease impacts your child’s brain and nervous system, their behavior changes, but it’s often a signal of a deeper, treatable issue.

Can Lyme disease cause mental health issues like anxiety or depression?

    Absolutely.

Tick-borne infections can disrupt brain function, affecting mood regulation and attention. Research has shown that some children with symptoms of bipolar disorder or anxiety in children improved after receiving appropriate antibiotic treatment for Lyme disease.

    Parent tips:

    • Observe behavioral shifts like sudden irritability, low mood, or obsessive behaviors

    • Track cognitive changes, such as memory lapses or learning challenges

    • Consult a specialist—pediatricians or neuropsychiatrists familiar with tick-borne illnesses can guide treatment

What steps can parents take to prevent Lyme disease?

Prevention is key. Simple measures can significantly reduce the risk of infection:

👉 Shower immediately after being outside – reduces infection risk by 59%

    👉 Use DEET-based repellents (avoid essential-oil sprays)

👉 Wash or seal outdoor clothing in high heat to kill ticks

👉 Check pets carefully – they often carry ticks indoors

👉 Maintain your yard to minimize tick habitats

    Real-life story:

A family that implemented these steps saw a major reduction in tick encounters, protecting both kids and pets from potential infection.

    What you can do next

Supporting your child’s nervous system is essential for healing.

Start with psychoneuroimmunology techniques to help your child’s body and brain function optimally:

👉 Gentle breathwork and grounding exercises

👉 Consistent routines to reduce stress

👉 Movement and sensory activities to regulate the body

When your child’s nervous system is calm, healing can happen more effectively.

Effective School Refusal Strategies to Overcome School Anxiety | Nervous System Regulation | E56 Apr 28, 2023
    Show notes

School Refusal: How to Help Your Child Return to School Calmly and Confidently

When your child melts down every morning before school, it’s not just resistance—it’s distress.

If your mornings are filled with tears, stomachaches, or the dreaded “I can’t do it” response, you're not alone.

School refusal in children and anxiety are rising at alarming rates, leaving parents exhausted and unsure what to do. In this episode, Dr. Roseann breaks down what school refusal really is and shares practical, science-backed strategies to help your child get back to learning calmly and confidently.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • why school refusal in children is on the rise

    • how nervous system regulation in children supports school success

    • what to do when school refusal starts

    • actionable strategies to calm your child’s anxiety before school

What’s really happening in the brain

School refusal doesn’t usually happen overnight—it creeps in.

What starts as mild worry or resistance can escalate into full avoidance. This behavior often signals a dysregulated nervous system, not willful defiance.

    Common causes include:

    • anxiety in children, depression, or OCD in children

    • bullying or social stress that makes school feel unsafe

    • learning challenges or sensory overload

    • post-illness or medical fatigue

It’s important to look beneath the behavior. A previously confident child may suddenly struggle because their internal stress bucket has finally overflowed.

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

Your child isn’t refusing school to frustrate you—they’re struggling with an overwhelmed nervous system that needs support.

    What you can do next

Start by addressing the root cause before focusing on attendance:

👉 Schedule a check-in with your child’s healthcare provider to rule out physical and emotional triggers.

👉 Create a safe, non-judgmental space for your child to express their feelings: “Help me understand what feels hard about school right now.”

👉 Expect setbacks. Progress isn’t always linear—some days will be better than others.

How to calm your child’s anxiety before school

When the brain is stuck in “fight, flight, or freeze,” logic shuts down. That’s why calming the nervous system first is essential.

    Try these tools:

    • Breathwork: Practice the 4-7-8 breathing method together every morning.

    • EFT tapping: Use gentle acupressure points to reduce anxiety in minutes.

    • Morning regulation ritual: Spend 10 minutes on stretching, music, or outdoor time before school.

    • Parent co-regulation: Your calm body helps signal safety to your child’s nervous system.

When your child’s nervous system calms, the school day feels less overwhelming.

How schools can help during school refusal

You don’t have to do this alone—schools play a big role in supporting your child’s return.

    What I recommend:

    • Open communication: Share what’s happening at home and keep the school informed.

    • Collaborative planning: Work with staff to create a gradual reintegration plan that starts small and builds wins.

    • Advocacy: Ask, “What supports can you provide so my child feels safe?”

    • Professional support: Bring in a trusted mental-health specialist to guide next steps.

Essential iep and 504 tips for parents from Vickie Brett and Amanda Selogie | Emotional Dysregulation in Children | E55 Apr 26, 2023
    Show notes

How to Know If Your Child Needs a 504 or an IEP

Understanding whether your child needs a 504 Plan or an IEP can feel confusing—but it’s essential to make the right choice to get your child the support they need.

In this episode, we break down the difference between the two plans, what each one provides, and how to determine which one best supports your child’s needs.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • what a 504 Plan and IEP provide and how they differ

    • when to request a 504 Plan vs an IEP for your child

    • how to advocate for your child’s specific needs in school

    • why written communication is crucial for securing the right support

What’s really happening with 504s and IEPs?

A 504 Plan and an IEP both help kids with ADHD, anxiety, dyslexia, or emotional challenges, but they serve different purposes.

    A 504 is for:

    • physical or mental impairments that limit major life activities

    • supports that help your child access learning (e.g., extended time, preferential seating)

    An IEP is for:

    • disabilities that require special education instruction

    • direct services like speech, OT, behavioral supports, or specialized academic instruction

    Real-life example:

A child with ADHD may get extended time with a 504 Plan. But if they’re still struggling academically or emotionally, they may need an IEP with targeted interventions to help them succeed.

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

Knowing whether your child needs accommodations (504) or specialized services (IEP) can make a big difference in their ability to thrive.

How do I know if my child needs a 504 or an IEP?

Does an ADHD diagnosis automatically qualify my child for a 504?

    Short answer: No.

A diagnosis helps—but eligibility depends on how ADHD affects your child’s functioning in school.

    Schools will look at:

    • how ADHD impacts your child’s functioning in and out of class

    • whether ADHD symptoms substantially limit learning

    • what supports are needed for progress

If your child is melting down after school, avoiding homework, or struggling to get started on tasks, these behaviors may indicate a need for deeper support beyond a 504.

    What you can do next

Once you understand the difference, take action:

👉 Request the appropriate plan based on your child’s needs

👉 Be specific about what supports are necessary (extra time, accommodations, specialized instruction)

👉 Advocate for nervous system regulation in children as part of the overall support plan

Confused by IEP vs 504? Get the Right Support for Your Child's Needs | Emotional Dysregulation in Children | E54 Apr 24, 2023
    Show notes

IEP vs. 504 Plans: Which One Will Help Your Child Thrive?

When your child is struggling in school—whether it’s melting down after homework, falling behind, or feeling overwhelmed by expectations—it’s easy to feel lost.

Understanding the difference between an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) and a 504 Plan can be a crucial first step in getting your child the support they need.

In this episode, Dr. Roseann breaks down how each plan works, what they cover, and how to figure out which one will best help your child succeed.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • the key differences between an IEP and a 504 Plan

    • which plan offers what level of support

    • how to determine which plan is right for your child

    • how nervous system regulation in children ties into school support

Why is it so hard to understand the difference between an IEP and a 504?

Most parents feel overwhelmed because IEPs and 504 plans sound similar—but they’re not the same.

    Here’s the truth:

    • IEPs provide specialized instruction and services for eligible students.
    • 504 Plans offer accommodations that ensure equal access to education for students with disabilities.

The key to understanding these plans is recognizing that they’re based on your child’s needs, not just their diagnosis.

    Real-life scenario:

A mom spent thousands pursuing an IEP for her gifted child with dyslexia. Her child didn’t qualify, but that didn’t mean they didn’t need support. This confusion happens every day—but you don’t have to navigate it alone.

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

If your child struggles academically, socially, or emotionally, an IEP or 504 could help—but you need the right one for their needs.

How do I know if my child really needs an IEP?

    Ask yourself:

👉 Is my child falling behind academically, socially, or developmentally due to a disability?

Children who often benefit from IEPs include those with:

    • Autism spectrum disorder

    • ADHD that affects learning

    • significant emotional or behavioral dysregulation

    • physical or neurological conditions that impact school success

    Key takeaways:

    • IEPs require measurable goals and tailored services
    • Services should match your child’s strengths and needs
    • You’re part of the collaborative decision-making team
    • IEPs can also support emotional regulation and nervous system regulation in children

    What you can do next

Start by identifying your child’s unique challenges and needs.

👉 Collaborate with teachers and support staff to assess whether an IEP or 504 Plan is best suited to help your child thrive.

The goal isn’t just to check boxes—it’s to provide the support your child needs to succeed.

If you’ve been searching for how to calm a dysregulated child, having the right support in place at school is crucial.

53: What Does My Kid's Testing Mean? Apr 21, 2023
    Show notes

Understanding Psychoeducational Evaluations: What Your Child’s Scores Really Mean

If your child just had a psychoeducational evaluation and you're staring at scores, percentiles, and reports thinking, "What am I even looking at?"—you’re not alone.

Testing can feel overwhelming for most parents, especially when your child is already dysregulated and you're looking for answers.

In this episode, we break down what psychoeducational evaluations really measure, how to interpret the data, and how to use the results to guide school decisions, supports, and accommodations.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • what psychoeducational evaluations actually measure

    • how to interpret complex data and what it means for your child

    • the difference between school and private evaluations

    • how to use evaluation results to guide your child’s school support

Why is my child’s psychoeducational evaluation so confusing?

Testing is filled with stats, jargon, and charts that can make anyone’s head spin. But don’t let the numbers overwhelm you—because they’re full of useful information about what’s happening inside your child’s brain and how to better support them.

    A good evaluation should:

    • identify strengths and weaknesses

    • show how disabilities or lagging skills affect learning

    • guide decisions on remediation, accommodations, and placement

    • help track progress over time

    Real-life example:

A parent once showed me a report that looked "fine," but the percentile ranks ranged from the 25th to the 99th. That massive gap explained why homework felt like a daily meltdown—huge variability equals huge frustration for kids.

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

Understanding the data behind an evaluation can help you see why your child is struggling and how to provide the right support.

    What you can do next

Start by understanding the type of evaluation your child received:

👉 Private evaluations: These give a complete learning profile, highlighting functional weaknesses and explaining why your child struggles.

👉 School evaluations: These determine whether your child qualifies for accommodations—focusing on access, not always the root cause.

Use this information to guide your next steps:

    • Advocate for accommodations that make a real difference.

    • Focus on supporting areas of weakness and building on strengths.

    • Track your child’s progress over time, not just test results.

If you’ve been searching for how to calm a dysregulated child, understanding the evaluation results is a powerful tool for next steps.

Preparing for School Meetings: How to Advocate for Your Child Effectively

If you’ve ever walked into a school meeting feeling unprepared, overwhelmed, or unsure what to say—you’re not alone.

School is a second home for your child, and when child behavior problems or emotional dysregulation in children show up, these meetings matter more than ever.

In this episode, we break down how to prepare for a school meeting so you can advocate clearly, confidently, and effectively for your child.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • how to prepare for a school meeting step by step

    • what to say when your child is struggling at school

    • how nervous system regulation in children impacts behavior and learning

    • how to collaborate with teachers and staff for better outcomes

What’s really happening in the classroom

When a child is struggling at school, it’s rarely just about academics.

    It’s often connected to:

    • anxiety in children or overwhelm

    • ADHD and executive functioning challenges

    • social or environmental stressors

When the nervous system is dysregulated, kids can’t access focus, problem-solving, or emotional control—no matter how hard they try.

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

School struggles are signals—not signs of failure.

    What you can do next

Before your meeting, prepare with intention:

👉 write down your concerns and specific examples

👉 identify patterns (when, where, and why struggles happen)

👉 ask about supports—not just problems

👉 stay calm and collaborative, not confrontational

Your goal isn’t to “win” the meeting—it’s to understand your child and create a plan.

If you’ve been searching for how to calm a dysregulated child, school support is a critical part of the solution.

EFT Tapping for Anxiety: A Simple Tool to Calm Your Child’s Brain

If your child’s worry spirals into meltdowns—and your own nerves feel shot—you’re not alone.

EFT tapping for anxiety is a simple, effective way to calm the brain and body so your child can feel safe again.

In this episode, we break down what EFT tapping is, why it works, and exactly how to use it with kids and teens at home.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • what EFT tapping for anxiety is and how it works

    • how tapping supports nervous system regulation in children

    • how to use EFT tapping step by step

    • how to support your child during intense emotional moments

What’s really happening in the brain

EFT tapping combines gentle acupressure points with simple, honest statements.

When kids tap while naming their worry, it helps lower stress activation and calm the fight, flight, or freeze response.

This is especially helpful for anxiety in children and emotional dysregulation in children, where the brain gets stuck in overdrive.

    Example:

Your child is overwhelmed about a test. You tap together while saying,

“Even though I’m worried about my test, it’s gonna be OK.”

You’ll often see their breathing slow and their body settle.

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

When your child is overwhelmed, they need regulation—not reasoning.

    What you can do next

    Start simple:

    👉 choose one worry

👉 have your child rate it from 0–5 (SUDS)

    👉 use a setup statement:

“Even though I feel worried about [specific thing], it’s gonna be OK.”

Tap through a few rounds, then recheck the number.

Repeat until it drops to a more manageable level.

    For younger or distressed kids:

👉 tap on them or model tapping yourself

    👉 keep language simple

👉 focus on co-regulation—your calm helps their calm

If you’ve been searching for how to calm a dysregulated child, this is a powerful, easy-to-use tool.

EFT tapping is a safe, accessible tool that helps kids calm their bodies, reduce anxiety, and build emotional awareness.

    Consistency—not perfection—creates results.

Doctor Gaslighting: What to Do When Your Concerns About Your Child Are Dismissed | Regulation-First Parenting | E50 Apr 14, 2023
    Show notes

Doctor gaslighting can leave parents feeling frustrated, dismissed, and unsure of what to do next. When you're concerned about your child's health, behavior, or mental well-being, having your concerns minimized or ignored by a medical professional can be both confusing and discouraging. Understanding doctor gaslighting is an important step in becoming a stronger advocate for your child's care.

Many parents seek help because they notice changes in their child's behavior, emotions, learning, or overall health. Yet some leave appointments feeling unheard, questioned, or blamed. Doctor gaslighting occurs when symptoms, concerns, or experiences are dismissed, downplayed, or attributed to something other than the issue being reported.

For families raising children with anxiety, ADHD, OCD, PANS/PANDAS, emotional dysregulation, or other complex challenges, these experiences can delay support and make parents doubt their own observations.

    Trust your instincts.

Parents are often the first to recognize when something isn't right. While medical professionals play a critical role in diagnosis and treatment, parents bring valuable insight that should never be ignored.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • What doctor gaslighting is and how to recognize it

    • Why some parents feel dismissed when seeking help for their child

    • How medical gaslighting can impact diagnosis and treatment

    • Strategies for advocating for your child's needs

    • When it's appropriate to seek a second opinion

    • How to build a collaborative relationship with healthcare providers

What does doctor gaslighting look like?

    It can include:

    • Dismissing symptoms without proper evaluation

    • Minimizing a parent's concerns

    • Attributing symptoms solely to stress or parenting

    • Refusing to explore additional testing or referrals

    • Suggesting a child will simply "grow out of it"

These experiences can leave parents feeling powerless, but there are steps you can take to advocate effectively.

    How can parents respond?

    Helpful strategies include:

    • Documenting symptoms and concerns

    • Asking questions and requesting clarification

    • Seeking second or third opinions when needed

    • Trusting patterns you consistently observe

    • Finding providers who listen and collaborate

    Knowledge is power.

The more informed and confident you become, the better equipped you'll be to advocate for your child's health and well-being.
