What Is Failure to Launch and Why Are Teens Struggling? | Emotional Dysregulation in Children | E69 May 26, 2023
    Show notes

What is failure to launch? It's a question more parents are asking as increasing numbers of teens and young adults struggle to transition into independence. In this episode, I explain what is failure to launch, why it happens, and what parents can do to help young adults build the emotional, executive functioning, and life skills needed for adulthood. Understanding what is failure to launch is the first step toward helping your child move forward with confidence.

Many parents feel confused and frustrated when a teen or young adult seems stuck. They may avoid responsibilities, struggle with motivation, remain dependent on parents, or have difficulty taking the next steps toward independence. While these challenges can be concerning, they are often signs of deeper issues rather than laziness or lack of effort.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • What failure to launch really means

    • Common causes behind delayed independence

    • How emotional regulation affects adulthood readiness

    • Practical ways parents can support young adults

    What is failure to launch?

Failure to launch describes difficulties transitioning into adult responsibilities and independence.

    Young adults may struggle with:

    • Employment or career planning

    • College adjustment

    • Independent living skills

    • Emotional regulation

    • Executive functioning challenges

    • Anxiety and avoidance

These challenges often have roots that go much deeper than motivation alone.

    Behavior is communication.

What looks like resistance or lack of effort may actually be anxiety, executive functioning difficulties, or emotional overwhelm.

Understanding the root cause helps families respond more effectively.

Why is failure to launch becoming more common?

    Several factors may contribute, including:

    • Increased anxiety and stress

    • Executive functioning deficits

    • Emotional dysregulation

    • Social challenges

    • Perfectionism and fear of failure

    • Mental health concerns

Many young adults want independence but lack the skills or confidence to move forward.

    How can parents help?

    Helpful strategies include:

    • Building life skills gradually

    • Encouraging problem-solving and independence

    • Supporting emotional regulation

    • Setting healthy expectations and boundaries

    • Addressing anxiety and avoidance patterns

The goal is not forcing independence.

The goal is helping young adults develop the confidence and skills needed to manage adulthood successfully.

    Why does emotional regulation matter?

Young adults who struggle with regulation often have difficulty managing:

    • Academic demands

    • Workplace expectations

    • Relationships

    • Stress and uncertainty

Strengthening regulation skills creates a stronger foundation for independence.

The good news is that failure to launch is not permanent. With the right support, guidance, and skill development, young adults can build confidence, gain independence, and move toward a successful future.

Brain Calming Techniques for Parents: How to Help a Dysregulated Child

When your child is constantly melting down, snapping at you, or shutting down, it can feel defeating.

You’re trying so hard, yet nothing seems to stick.

    You’re not alone.

In this episode, Dr. Roseann shares practical brain calming techniques for parents, explains what dysregulation really looks like, and gives simple tools to help your child settle, focus, and think more clearly.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • what emotional dysregulation in children really looks like

    • the difference between overstimulation and understimulation

    • practical brain calming techniques for parents

    • how to support nervous system regulation in children through co-regulation

What’s really happening in the brain

A dysregulated brain cannot process language, instructions, or emotions effectively.

    That’s why kids may:

    • become irritable or explosive

    • struggle with simple directions

    • avoid thinking tasks

    • melt down unexpectedly

    • have trouble transitioning between activities

    Real-life scenario:

You ask your child to unload their backpack after school and they instantly yell or cry.

    It’s not disrespect.

Their nervous system is overloaded and they don’t have the brain bandwidth for another demand.

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

Whether your child is overstimulated or understimulated, their nervous system is out of balance—not trying to make your life difficult.

    What you can do next

    Start proactive, not reactive.

    Overstimulated kids may show:

    • anxiety

    • irritability

    • sensory overwhelm

    • difficulty focusing

    Understimulated kids may show:

    • boredom

    • inattentiveness

    • low motivation

    Support regulation with:

    👉 sensory breaks

    👉 movement and vestibular input

👉 quiet time and predictable routines

    👉 lowering demands during overwhelm

If you’ve been searching for how to calm a dysregulated child, the goal is helping the nervous system find balance again.

How to stay calm during meltdowns

    Here’s the hardest truth:

    👉 you must regulate first.

Your child’s nervous system co-regulates with yours, meaning your calm becomes their calm.

    Try:

    • lowering your voice as their volume rises

    • keeping your body grounded and still

    • validating feelings: “You’re overwhelmed. I’m here.”

    • avoiding anger or power struggles

    Co-regulation changes everything.

How to Deal With a Moody Child Without Power Struggles | Emotional Dysregulation in Children | E67 May 22, 2023
    Show notes

Deal with moody child challenges can leave even the most patient parent feeling frustrated, exhausted, and unsure of what to do next. In this episode, I explain how to deal with moody child behaviors without walking on eggshells, escalating conflicts, or constantly second-guessing yourself. If you've been wondering how to deal with moody child struggles when emotions seem to change from minute to minute, this episode will help you better understand what's happening beneath the surface.

Many children experience mood swings as they grow and develop. However, when big emotions become frequent, intense, or disruptive, parents often find themselves wondering whether it's typical development, emotional dysregulation, anxiety, ADHD, or another underlying issue.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why some children seem moody all the time

    • The difference between moodiness and emotional dysregulation

    • Common triggers behind big emotional reactions

    • Practical ways to support your child without increasing conflict

Why is my child so moody?

    Moodiness can be influenced by:

    • Emotional dysregulation

    • Anxiety and stress

    • ADHD and executive functioning challenges

    • Sleep difficulties

    • Hormonal changes

    • Sensory sensitivities

    • Nervous system overload

What appears to be moodiness is often a sign that a child's nervous system is struggling to stay regulated.

    Behavior is communication.

What looks like attitude or moodiness may actually be a child who is overwhelmed, stressed, or struggling to manage emotions.

Understanding this shift helps parents respond more effectively.

    How can parents respond?

    Helpful strategies include:

    • Staying calm during emotional moments

    • Avoiding power struggles

    • Validating feelings without reinforcing negative behaviors

    • Looking for patterns and triggers

    • Supporting nervous system regulation

Children are more likely to regulate when they feel safe, understood, and supported.

    What should parents avoid?

    Common mistakes include:

    • Taking moodiness personally

    • Matching a child's emotional intensity

    • Over-correcting during emotional moments

    • Assuming the behavior is intentional

Connection is often more effective than confrontation.

    When should parents be concerned?

Consider additional support when mood changes:

    • Persist over time

    • Interfere with school or friendships

    • Affect family relationships significantly

    • Include severe emotional outbursts or withdrawal

Early intervention can make a meaningful difference.

The goal isn't eliminating every emotional reaction. The goal is helping children build the emotional regulation skills they need to handle life's challenges with confidence and resilience.

Improving Reading Skills: Brain Training for Dyslexia | Nervous System Regulation | E66 May 19, 2023
    Show notes

Brain training for dyslexia is gaining attention as parents look for effective ways to help children strengthen reading skills, improve learning, and build confidence. In this episode, we explore how brain training for dyslexia can support children who struggle with reading, phonological processing, spelling, and comprehension. If you're searching for practical solutions, understanding brain training for dyslexia may open new possibilities for helping your child succeed both academically and emotionally.

Dyslexia affects far more than reading. Children with dyslexia often work harder than their peers just to keep up in school, which can lead to frustration, low self-esteem, anxiety, and a growing belief that they're not capable learners. The reality is that dyslexia is not a reflection of intelligence. It is a difference in how the brain processes language and reading-related information.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • What dyslexia really is and how it affects learning

    • Why reading struggles impact confidence and emotional well-being

    • The role of brain training in supporting reading development

    • Practical strategies that help dyslexic learners thrive

    How does dyslexia affect reading?

Children with dyslexia may struggle with:

    • Phonological processing

    • Decoding words

    • Reading fluency

    • Reading comprehension

    • Spelling and writing

    • Processing language efficiently

These challenges can make school feel exhausting, even for bright and capable students.

    Behavior is communication.

A child who avoids reading may not be unmotivated. They may be protecting themselves from frustration, embarrassment, or repeated failure.

Understanding the emotional impact of dyslexia is just as important as addressing academic challenges.

What is brain training for dyslexia?

Brain training focuses on strengthening the neural pathways involved in reading, language processing, attention, and learning.

    Approaches may support:

    • Reading fluency

    • Processing speed

    • Working memory

    • Attention and focus

    • Learning efficiency

The goal is helping the brain become more efficient while supporting the specific skills needed for reading success.

    Why does confidence matter?

Many children with dyslexia begin to believe they are less capable than their peers.

When reading becomes easier, children often experience improvements in:

    • Self-esteem

    • Motivation

    • Academic confidence

    • Classroom participation

    • Emotional regulation

Success in learning often creates success in other areas of life.

    A parent's perspective

Joining me is Nancy McDermott, a fellow parent of a child with dyslexia, who shares her experiences navigating the challenges of reading difficulties and finding solutions that helped her child thrive.

Her story offers hope, practical insights, and encouragement for families who may feel overwhelmed by their child's learning struggles.

How to Stop Feeding the OCD Monster | Emotional Dysregulation in Children | E65 May 17, 2023
    Show notes

When your child is drowning in intrusive thoughts, endless questions, or rituals that take over your home, it can feel terrifying and isolating.

But you’re not alone and it’s not your fault.

OCD in children is fear-driven, exhausting, and often misunderstood, especially when it’s mistaken for anxiety in children. In this episode, Dr. Roseann explains why OCD behaves the way it does, why accommodation accidentally fuels it, and how parents can stop feeding the OCD monster while helping their child feel safe and supported.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • why kids with OCD in children ask repetitive reassurance questions

    • how accommodation strengthens OCD over time

    • how emotional dysregulation in children fuels intrusive thoughts and rituals

    • practical ways to support nervous system regulation in children while setting boundaries

What’s really happening in the brain

Kids with OCD aren’t trying to be difficult—they’re terrified.

Reassurance-seeking is the brain’s attempt to neutralize fear. Every time a parent answers the same question, anxiety temporarily drops—but OCD learns:

👉 “I need that reassurance again.”

That’s how the cycle grows stronger.

    Over time:

    • reassurance loses effectiveness

    • anxiety baseline rises

    • rituals and compulsions increase

    Parent story:

A child repeatedly asks, “Are you sure the stove is off?” dozens of times each night. Reassurance helps briefly—but the fear quickly returns.

It’s not manipulation—it’s a dysregulated brain searching for safety.

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

Your child isn’t choosing OCD. Their nervous system is trapped in a fear loop that feels impossible to shut off.

    What you can do next

The goal is not to eliminate fear instantly, it’s to stop feeding OCD while helping your child tolerate uncertainty.

    Start with:

    👉 calm, supportive scripts like:

“I know this feels scary, but I’m not going to answer OCD.”

👉 co-regulation through calm tone, grounding touch, or slow breathing

👉 setting one small boundary at a time

Accommodation feels loving—but it unintentionally strengthens OCD.

    Parent story:

One mom stopped answering contamination questions and instead said, “I believe you can handle the uncertainty.” Within days, the meltdowns softened and her child began building confidence.

    What actually helps

Boundary-setting is part of treatment—not punishment.

    The most effective support combines:

    • ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention)

    • nervous system regulation

    • parent coaching and consistency

    • reducing accommodation gradually

If you’ve been searching for how to calm a dysregulated child, start by calming the brain first and stepping out of OCD’s rules.

Is it ODD, PANS, or Something Else? | Emotional Dysregulation in Children | E64 May 15, 2023
    Show notes

If your child’s behavior feels confusing, explosive, or unpredictable, you’re not alone.

Many parents worry their child has ODD, PANS/PANDAS, or something more serious because the meltdowns, anxiety, or refusal behaviors feel so intense. But the truth is:

many conditions overlap because dysregulation overlaps.

In this episode, Dr. Roseann explains why behaviors can look similar across conditions and why calming the brain first is the key to understanding what’s really happening.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • why emotional dysregulation in children can look like many different conditions

    • how the nervous system drives anger, anxiety, and meltdowns

    • how to become a “parent detective” and identify triggers

    • practical ways to support nervous system regulation in children

What’s really happening in the brain

When kids are overwhelmed, the brain shifts into fight, flight, or freeze.

That means the thinking brain goes offline and survival behaviors take over.

    This can look like:

    • explosive anger

    • panic or shutdowns

    • impulsivity or refusal

    • irrational or extreme reactions

It’s not defiance—it’s a dysregulated brain trying to cope.

    Parent story:

A child melts down every time homework begins. Once the parent realizes the trigger is anxiety—not attitude—everything changes.

    Behavior is communication, not character.

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

When we focus only on stopping behaviors, we miss the root cause driving them.

    What you can do next

Become a “parent detective.” for your child with pans/pandas or odd

    Instead of reacting, start observing:

    👉 what triggers the behavior?

    👉 when does it happen?

👉 how long does it last?

👉 what patterns show up repeatedly?

Then focus on calming the nervous system first.

    Helpful tools include:

    • deep breathing and mindfulness

    • movement and sensory regulation

    • lowering sensory overload

    • co-regulation and calm communication

If you’ve been searching for how to calm a dysregulated child, start with your own nervous system first.

How to support your child and family

Your child needs calm, regulated adults around them.

To get caregivers on the same page:

    • focus on the nervous system—not blame

    • share resources and observations

    • keep communication open and judgment-free

    • seek support from trained professionals

    Co-regulation works.

When you calm yourself first, your child’s nervous system responds.

    OCD vs Anxiety | Nervous System Regulation | E62 May 10, 2023
    Show notes

It’s heartbreaking to watch your child shrink under fear, worry, or rituals—and feel helpless.

You’re not alone. And it’s gonna be OK.

Many families confuse anxiety in children with OCD in children, and that misunderstanding can keep kids stuck while parents grow more overwhelmed. In this episode, Dr. Roseann breaks down the difference between stress, anxiety, and OCD and explains what parents can do to help calm the brain first.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • the difference between stress, anxiety, and OCD in children

    • how intrusive thoughts and rituals show up differently from anxiety

    • what signs suggest anxiety has become clinical

    • practical ways to support nervous system regulation in children

What’s really happening in the brain

Stress is a normal nervous system response.

The brain shifts into alert mode, responds to discomfort, and then returns to calm.

But with anxiety in children, the nervous system stays activated—and when OCD is present, that activation often includes compulsions or rituals meant to reduce fear.

    Here’s the difference:

👉 Anxiety = excessive worry that interferes with daily life

👉 OCD = intrusive thoughts + compulsive behaviors meant to neutralize fear

    Real-life scenario:

A child says, “I’m afraid I’ll make someone sick,” and washes her hands 20 times before school.

That ritual is a major clue this may be OCD—not just anxiety.

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

Your child isn’t trying to be difficult—their nervous system is stuck in fear and looking for relief.

    What you can do next

    Start by looking for patterns:

👉 does your child avoid things because of fear?

👉 are there rituals, checking, counting, or repetitive behaviors?

👉 is the fear interfering with school, relationships, or daily life?

Then focus on calming the nervous system first.

    Helpful supports include:

    • breathwork and nervous system tools

    • gentle exposure for anxiety

    • ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) for OCD

    • reducing accommodation of rituals

ERP is the gold-standard treatment for OCD in children and is essential for lasting change.

If you’ve been searching for how to calm a dysregulated child, regulation must come before correction.

Neurofeedback and PEMF for Concussion Recovery with Ellyn Hartmayer | Nervous System Regulation | E61 May 08, 2023
    Show notes

If your child hasn’t been the same since a bump, fall, or sports injury, you’re not imagining it.

Concussions can quietly affect focus, mood, sleep, and emotional regulation long after the initial injury. In this episode, Dr. Roseann breaks down how neurofeedback and PEMF help the brain heal and why so many kids struggle silently after head injuries.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • why concussion symptoms can linger for months or years

    • how neurofeedback supports brain healing after a head injury

    • why concussions can look like ADHD, anxiety, or depression

    • how to support nervous system regulation in children during recovery

What’s really happening in the brain

A concussion can leave the brain stuck in a hyper-alert state.

    That means kids may:

    • wake up exhausted despite sleeping

    • struggle with focus and emotional regulation

    • experience headaches, anxiety or mood swings

    • feel overwhelmed or shut down

The brain heals during sleep, so when sleep is disrupted, recovery slows down.

    Parent scenario:

A teen sleeps 9 hours every night but still wakes up exhausted and emotionally fragile.

It’s not laziness—it’s a dysregulated brain trying to heal.

    The reframe parents need

    Behavior is communication.

    It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

Concussion-related dysregulation can mimic ADHD, anxiety, or depression—even when the root issue is brain injury.

    How neurofeedback and PEMF help

Neurofeedback gives the brain real-time feedback so it can learn how to regulate again.

    Benefits may include:

    • improved brain wave patterns

    • reduced headaches and sleep issues

    • better focus and emotional control

    • improved mood and energy

PEMF helps calm the nervous system and support healing at a cellular level, helping kids feel more regulated and resilient during recovery.

    What you can do next

If your child is struggling after a concussion:

👉 prioritize sleep and nervous system regulation

    👉 reduce pressure and overstimulation

    👉 create calm, predictable routines

👉 consider tools like QEEG brain mapping, neurofeedback, or PEMF

Kids don’t need to “push through” recovery—they need support for healing.

If you’ve been searching for how to calm a dysregulated child, concussion recovery starts with calming the brain first.

    What's Going on in My Kid's Brain | Emotional Dysregulation in Children | E60 May 05, 2023
    Show notes

What's happening in my child's brain? It's a question many parents ask when their child has emotional outbursts, struggles with self-regulation, or reacts in ways that seem confusing or unpredictable. Understanding what's happening in your child's brain can completely change how you respond to challenging behavior and help you support your child more effectively.

Many parents assume their child is choosing to misbehave or intentionally making life difficult. But in many cases, children aren't trying to create problems. They're responding to stress, overwhelm, anxiety, or nervous system dysregulation in the only way they know how.

    Behavior is communication.

When we understand what's happening in my child's brain, we begin to see behavior through a different lens. Instead of asking, "Why is my child doing this?" we can ask, "What is my child's brain and nervous system trying to communicate?"

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • What's happening in my child's brain during moments of stress and overwhelm

    • How brain development influences behavior and emotional regulation

    • Why children react differently to challenges and transitions

    • The connection between the nervous system and behavior

    • How neuroscience can help parents respond more effectively

    • Practical ways to support regulation, resilience, and emotional growth

Why does understanding the brain matter?

When children become dysregulated, the thinking brain becomes less accessible and the survival brain takes over. This can lead to:

    • Emotional outbursts

    • Anxiety and worry

    • Impulsive reactions

    • Shutdown and withdrawal

    • Difficulty problem-solving

    • Challenges with self-regulation

Calm the brain first. Everything else follows.

The more parents understand the brain, the easier it becomes to respond with connection, co-regulation, and support instead of frustration and punishment.
