Aging after 50 doesn’t have to mean declining health. Research following more than 120,000 people over eight years found that VO2 max was one of the strongest predictors of longevity. VO2 max reflects how efficiently your mitochondria use oxygen to produce energy.

Supporting metabolic health is essential for healthy aging. Even when plenty of fuel is available, your cells can’t produce energy efficiently if metabolic health is impaired.

While high cholesterol is often viewed as a risk factor, research has linked higher total cholesterol with a lower risk of all-cause mortality.

Although genetics influences aging, lifestyle plays a more significant role. Supplements can be beneficial, but it’s best to focus on meaningful changes to support longevity. Regular long walks are a great way to support mitochondrial health and a longer lifespan.

Waking Up to Pee at Night? The Problem Starts During the Day Jul 31, 2026

If you’re dealing with frequent urination at night, it’s probably not linked to prostate or bladder health. Find out how to prevent nighttime urination by addressing the real root cause so you can finally sleep through the night.

Frequent urination at night is often more than just a bladder or prostate problem. Many people produce one to two cups of urine overnight, and much of this fluid comes from what was consumed earlier in the day, not just before bed.

By age 80, nighttime urination affects most adults. One possible clue is fluid retention, which is often associated with elevated glucose and insulin rather than simply drinking too much water or eating too much salt. An edema test and a fasting insulin test can help identify underlying issues.

Gravity also plays a role. Fluid that accumulates in the legs during the day can return to the bloodstream while you sleep, increasing urine production overnight. Sleep apnea and certain medications can also contribute to frequent nighttime urination.

What defines normal cholesterol levels today isn’t the same as it was decades ago. As the threshold for high cholesterol has continued to decrease, millions more people have been diagnosed. The focus has also shifted from total cholesterol to LDL cholesterol, but if cholesterol alone is the problem, why do cardiovascular disease rates remain so high?

Not all LDL cholesterol is the same. Small, dense LDL particles are associated with inflammation, while large, buoyant LDL particles behave differently. An advanced lipid profile can help distinguish between these two types.

Insulin resistance is one of the key drivers of high LDL cholesterol and is often linked to the chronic consumption of sugar and starches. A fasting insulin test may provide valuable insight into your metabolic health. Inflammation, low thyroid function, chronic stress, and fatty liver can also contribute to elevated LDL cholesterol.

Berberine is often compared to Metformin because of its potential effects on blood sugar and insulin resistance. Since insulin resistance has been linked to dozens of health conditions, improving metabolic health has benefits that extend beyond weight loss.

More than 50 clinical trials have investigated berberine, with studies reporting improvements in A1C, fasting blood sugar, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol comparable to those seen with Metformin.

Taking berberine alone is unlikely to produce significant results if your diet doesn’t change. Learn how berberine works, why it may support healthy blood sugar and weight management, and the best way to start taking it while minimizing digestive discomfort.

The #1 Way to Stop Tartar From Coming Back for Good Jul 28, 2026

Tartar buildup can irritate your gums, causing inflammation, bleeding, and allowing bacteria to invade the gum tissue. While brushing your teeth and getting regular dental cleanings are important, they can also introduce oral bacteria into your bloodstream. Researchers have found oral bacteria in the arterial plaque of heart attack and stroke victims, as well as in the synovial fluid of people with rheumatoid arthritis.

Plaque is a soft, living bacterial biofilm that hasn’t yet calcified and is associated with a more acidic environment that can increase the risk of cavities. Tartar is hardened, calcified plaque that can’t be removed with brushing and requires a professional dental cleaning.

Once tartar is removed, the key is preventing it from coming back. Some people notice more tartar buildup on a keto diet, but that doesn’t mean you need to change your diet. Just apply these simple tartar prevention tips to help prevent tartar buildup.

Many people eat three meals a day, but this may not be the best approach for everyone. After about 12–16 hours of fasting, glycogen stores become depleted, and your body begins burning more fat. At around 16 hours of fasting, autophagy increases as your body starts recycling old and damaged proteins, with continued activity in the liver, muscles, and brain.

Millions of people around the world practice intermittent fasting. Research has found improvements in body weight, waist circumference, triglycerides, and cholesterol markers during this period.

The first few days of a one meal a day (OMAD) diet are often the most challenging as your body adapts to using ketones for fuel. By days 4–7, many people find hunger and cravings improve as their bodies become more efficient at burning fat. Intermittent fasting also increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which supports brain health.

As intermittent fasting continues, growth hormone levels increase, supporting muscle, tendon, and ligament repair. A one meal a day diet may not be the best approach for everyone, including some postmenopausal women.

There’s a three-year window in every woman’s life when she can lose more muscle than during the previous 20 years combined. Even with plenty of protein and regular exercise, many women still experience postmenopausal muscle loss.

Leucine is an essential amino acid that signals your muscles to grow. As you age, your protein and leucine requirements increase, making both especially important for maintaining muscle after menopause.

After menopause, estrogen levels drop significantly, contributing to postmenopausal muscle loss. Fortunately, exercise can help rebuild muscle. Research has shown that weight training can significantly improve muscle loss after menopause while also supporting bone health.

Age-related muscle loss is known as sarcopenia. It affects not only muscle tissue but also the nervous system and connective tissue, making it more difficult to rebuild muscle over time. This is why it’s important to begin preserving and rebuilding muscle as early as possible.

Osteoporosis is not simply a calcium deficiency. Bones store calcium, phosphorus, and more than half of the body’s magnesium. Magnesium helps regulate calcium, supports vitamin D function, and plays an important role in bone health.

One of the most common factors associated with osteoporosis is elevated parathyroid hormone related to low vitamin D. Low magnesium can also affect parathyroid hormone. Some people have normal calcium levels but still develop severe osteoporosis, showing that bone density and bone strength are not always the same.

Magnesium deficiency is difficult to detect with a standard blood test and may go unnoticed until it becomes more severe. Chronic stress and certain medications, including prednisone and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), may also affect bone health.

If you have osteoporosis, getting enough magnesium is important. Focus on magnesium-rich foods, magnesium glycinate, vitamin D, and vitamin K2 to help support healthy bones and maintain bone density.
