    Show notes

Our trip through classic season one is back to moving pictures! Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we cover Terry Nation's eclectic 6-parter, "The Keys of Marinus". There's a lot to love and some to not-love. Listen and see who thinks which parts are which!

How do you feel about this story? Do you love its fairy-tale nature and the multiple adventures? Or do you think it drags? If the latter, which parts drag? We're super-curious to know, so please tell us in the comments!

    112 - Paddy Russell (Fang) Rocks! Jun 22, 2016
    Show notes

It's a rare Verity! two-hander! Join Erika and Lynne as we chat about Doctor Who's first female director Paddy Russell, specifically, her final story "Horror of Fang Rock". Turns out there are a number of reasons this story works as a "first", so we're still well within our annual theme. Totally. Really.

What do you think of "Fang Rock" and Paddy's direction? Do you find it as atmospheric and moody and delightful as we do? Or do you think it's a lot of talking in small rooms? Let us know in the comments!

    ^E

    Also covered:

    • Lynne
      • is thrilled the series 10 read-through has begun!
      • gets to talk about Doctor Who at an academic summer camp!

Extra! - In Defence of...5 Rounds Rapid Jun 15, 2016
    Show notes

It's time for another silly Extra! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Tansy as we defend the very-nearly-indefensible. We had some excellent topics left over from our live show at Gallifrey One, so we put them to good use!

Do you have some topics you'd like us to defend on a future In Defence Of? Let us know in the comments!

    111 - Losing The Long Game Jun 08, 2016
    Show notes

It's Eccleston time again! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Lynne as we discuss a real workhorse of an episode, "The Long Game". Adam, the not-quite-companion fails, the Doctor and Rose aren't the most mature, and we play "we'll fix it for you" to help Lynne handwave something that bugs her. Then we talk about potato chips. No, really.

What did you think of this one? Did it make an impression? Have you revisited it since the first time you saw it? Let us know in the comments!

    ^E

    Also covered:

    • Lynne's collection of Doctor Who DVDs is once again complete, with the purchase of The Underwater Menace!
    • Erika inspired a Mexican Doctor Who podcast, Doctor Quien!
    • Kat discovered the existence of a Doctor Who board game, Doctor Who, The Game of Time and Space!
    • Deb's heart is warmed by the goodness of fandom:
      • Listener Helen made it possible for a fellow fan to attend Awesome Con!
      • Chip, the Two-minute Time Lord, has made quite the contribution to fandom and podcasting, and we'll miss him while he's on hiatus.

Extra! - AVA (Ask Verity! Anything) Jun 01, 2016
    Show notes

It's another "ask Verity! Extra!" Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy (who ran out of time to do our homework for our planned Extra!). We decided to punt and let you do the work! Thanks to all the listeners who tweeted us questions to answer!

Have a question for the Verities? Ask in the comments, and we'll bank those questions with the ones we didn't have time to answer this time!

    110 - Mehnlightenment May 25, 2016
    Show notes

It's a classic-Who first! Join Deb, Erika, and Katrina as they talk about the first Doctor Who story written by a woman, Barbara Clegg's "Enlightenment". Not for the first time, Erika and Kat go against received fan wisdom and are lukewarm at best toward this story. Good thing Deb is here to balance things out.

What do you think of "Enlightenment"? Are you drawn in by its fascinating concepts? Or left cold by a lack of connection to what's happening on screen? Let us know in the comments!

    ^E

    Also covered:

    • Kat is thrilled byJantoreunion news:
      • John Barrowman and Gareth David Lloyd are recording together again!
      • They recorded a video at Ianto's Shrine!
    • Erika enjoys the joy of her spouse at getting the 12th Doctor's sonic screwdriver!
    • Deb points out some scraps of new DW content:
      • The Legends of River Song!
      • David Tennant and Katharine Tate's new Big Finish audio!

Extra! - The Oncoming Storm Warning May 18, 2016
    Show notes

It's an audio-based Extra! this week! Join Deb, Erika, and Liz as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first televised appearance of the 8th Doctor by talking about his first audio appearance! That's right, it's Storm Warning. And because we love Big Finish so much, we digress a LOT and talk about many other Big Finish stories we love--whether they include 8 or not. When it comes to DW audios, it's near-impossible to keep us on track, and we're A-OK with that!

Have you heard Storm Warning? If so, what do you think of it? And do you think it's a good starting place for a new BF listener? Let us know in the comments!

    109 - Resurrection of a Dalek May 11, 2016
    Show notes

Back to new Who series 1! Join Deb, Erika, Liz, and Tansy as we talk about Rob Shearman's resurrection of the Doctor's most iconic enemy, the Daleks. We do a little "fanthropology" and talk about how we each felt watching this story when it first aired and whether we feel any different now. It was a turning-point episode for some of us, but does it live up to the memories? Listen and see!

What do you think of "Dalek"? Is it still (or was it ever) amazing? Or does TV from 11 years ago look too different to take as seriously? Let us know in the comments!

    Also covered:

    • Liz's new Star Wars the Old Republic guildie is an old-school DW fan!
    • Tansy
      • enjoys all the Bill fan art on Tumblr!
      • gives kudos to Hot Topic/Torrid for their size-inclusive Doctor Who clothing line!
    • Erika enjoyed Calgary Expo and livetweeted two panels:
      • John Barrowman!
      • Billie Piper!
    • Deb is mightily intrigued and excited by the prospect of a Doctor Who writers' room under Chris Chibnall!

    Extra! - Day One, Chibnall-Style May 04, 2016
    Show notes

Time for another first-based Extra! (Which is sadly sans-Deb--damn real world!) Join Erika, Katrina, and Lynne as we talk about Chris Chibnall's first foray into the televised Doctor Who universe. It's not an ep of DW, however. The first he wrote was the second episode of Torchwood, "Day One". It's a solid start that gets the series rolling with lots of delicious character interaction and provides much-needed visibility for bisexual people. That's our story and we're sticking to it.

Have you seen "Day One"? Did you enjoy it as much as we did? Or is "camp-noir" not for you? Let us know in the comments!
