    Docs Outside The Box

Hosts Dr. Nii (Ghanaian) and Dr. Renee (Haitian) are first-generation physicians who paid off $662,000 in student loans in 3 years – while figuring out contracts, career moves, and money management that their colleagues learned at home.

Every episode covers what first-gen docs need to know:

    • Contract negotiation and career decisions
    • Paying off debt without family financial guidance
    • Building wealth from scratch
    • The questions you don’t know to ask (but your colleagues already knew)

Real strategies from doctors who had to figure it out on their own.

On this episode of DOTB we have Dr. Bonnie Koo from Missbonniemd.com. I featured her blog as one of my Top 5 favorite physician personal finance blogs to make you a doc outside the box.

Caught up with her at FinCon 18 and talked about her going from being pre-med one day to living and making six figures in London the next. Although living her best life financially, she still had the urge to be a doctor.

After medical school, Dr. Bonnie Koo did not let the huge student loan debt stop her from taking control of her life. She created her own personal finance blog called missbonniemd.com and also hosts Friends Talk Finance with Dr. Carrie Reynolds from Hippocratic Hustle Podcast.

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

    • How she didn’t fall into the cycle of living pay check to pay check
    • The fascinating story behind her student loan debt payoff
    • Why personal finances are so different for women compared to men
    • Why she writes about Blended families, prenups and divorce
    • How she answers #imnotjustadoc

What’s good everyone! On this episode we’re going to get a glimpse into the life of ER physician by day, and punk rocker by night – Dr. Daryl Wilson. That’s right one minute he’s saving lives in the ER, the next he’s spending time with his family, and by the evening he’s kicking his Vans sneakers in air with his rock group.

This might be the most “Outside the Box” story featured on this show so far – and I’m so amped up to be apart of this.

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

    • How he balanced medical school with going on tour
    • How he handled getting kicked out of the band
    • His family’s support of him even though the music was foreign to them
    • The difference interacting with patients versus interacting with fans
    • How he answers #imnotjustadoc

On this episode, my guest is Student Doctor Kamali Thompson who is a 4th year medical student at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey. I got her on the show to talk how she handles the craziness of medical school with being an amazing fencer! She’s got aspirations of making the Olympics in 2020 ya’ll.

Kamali got started with fencing pretty late in comparison with other fencers. With hard work, persistence, and people believing in her she’s been able to be successful at all levels. Recently she added US National Champion to her resume and regularly competes for Team USA internationally.

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

    • How she got introduced to Fencing as a sport
    • The difference between studying for medical school vs training for the Olympics

When you think of disruptor, I bet the last thing that comes to mind are underarm or body odor products. My next guest is Dr. Shannon Klingman, and disrupt the deodorant industry is exactly what she’s aiming to do with her product Lume.

Lume Deodorant is an aluminum free, natural deodorant for underarm and private parts. It has been clinically proven to provide you with 48 hours of odor protection.

I used this product for my book launch prior to interviewing Dr. Klingman. It took me a while to get used to the natural scent of this product compared to the heavy scents of corporate brands, but the results definitely made me a believer and I recommend this product for you.

Thing’s you’ll learn in this episode:

    • Her family’s decision to live off of one salary as opposed to two doctor’s salaries
    • The genesis of Lume
    • Why it took over 11 years to get this product out
    • Her transition from OB to stay at home to inventor/entrepreneur

How are you all handling this August heat?!?

Everyone who wants to reach out, make sure you show some love to the “Ask me a Question” button on the right of the website. I thinks its more personal and efficient to ask a question or just leave some feedback!

Today’s episode is 2 years in the making. On this episode, I’m chopping it up with Dr. Zun Lee who is a world-renowned photographer and self-described visual story teller. We chatted about his transition from the clinical physician world, to corporate healthcare management, to now as full-time photographer.

He’s a heavy hitter. His work has been featured in Forbes, The New York Times, Huffington Post, and Wall Street Journal. In 2014 he put out a groundbreaking book called Father Figure: Exploring Alternate Notions of Black Fatherhood, and it has won several international awards.

On a side note, I recorded this with Dr. Zun Lee almost 2 years ago. This interview goes through so many different layers and I wasn’t sure how it would’ve been received when the show first started. I think that was a mistake for not being confident how you the audience would receive a podcast episode that talks about these issues. I apologize to Dr. Lee and to you – the amazing audience.

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

    • Difference of patient care in United States vs Germany (where he trained)
    • How he handled going from being a “scrub” to a “suit”
    • How he found his love for photography after being forced to by a co-worker
    • Why vulnerability helps him relate to his subjects in photography
    • What his photos say about him
    • How he answers #imnotjustadoc
