Why are so many young people suffering from financial dysmorphia? Apr 19, 2026
    Show notes

When we hear the term dysmorphia, most of us think about body image, the gap between what we see in the mirror and reality. We’ve talked about Snapchat dysmorphia and body dysmorphia on Do You Really Know in the past.

But the concept actually goes beyond physical appearance. Just as our brains can distort how we see our reflection, they can also skew our perception of money. This phenomenon is called financial dysmorphia.

What’s that? How are social media and money connected? How can we beat financial dysmorphia? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

What's the best alarm to wake up to? Apr 19, 2026
    Show notes

Did you know that the alarm clock actually serves a greater purpose than simply rousing us from sleep? Whether it's the buzz of your smartphone, a breaking news update, or a soothing classical tune, your alarm sets the tone for the day ahead. And it can be quite the dilemma choosing between a jolting alarm which is guaranteed you wake you up or nature sounds that might end up lulling you back to sleep—or worse, not wake you up at all.

Sydney Aten is an American neuroscientist who specialises in circadian rhythms and sleep. Talking to HuffPost.com for an article on alarm sounds which was published in 2023, she pointed out that waking up abruptly can be quite jarring for the body. It triggers a real surge of adrenaline, a hormone which is typically released in response to intense emotions or sensations. Basically, waking up to a loud or piercing sound can spike our heart rate and induce stress.

What about using more neutral sounds then? What about hitting the snooze button - is that a good way to snag a few extra minutes of sleep? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

Why do we change our hairstyle when we’re depressed? Apr 19, 2026
    Show notes

Our hair says a lot about our personalities —it’s a core part of our identity. It reflects who we are and how we want the world to perceive us.

As noted by British hair historian Caroline Cox in her book Good Hair Days, “A hairstyle is the ultimate form of self-expression. It tells the world who you are—or who you want to be.” This idea highlights the powerful role hair plays in shaping and communicating our individuality.

Why do major life changes push us toward the salon? Is it purely symbolic? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

Could you be micro-flirting without realising it? Apr 18, 2026
    Show notes

There are plenty of ways to get the attention of someone you're crushing on. It might come very naturally to some, but for others, flirting can be an intimidating proposition.

Have you ever wondered if someone is flirting with you, because of their somewhat ambiguous approach? Well, they may have been micro-flirting, a technique that dating experts say is used by shy men in particular. And there are actually some pretty recognisable under-the-radar strategies that qualify as micro-flirting, which is what we’re going to shed light on today.

How exactly does one micro-flirt then? Why do shy people tend to veer towards a micro-flirting approach then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

How can I beat my work addiction? Apr 18, 2026
    Show notes

Being a grafter or hustler is often portrayed in a positive light when it comes to the world of work. But there are a host of negative consequences that can arise when a person becomes a workaholic. The term was invented by American psychologist Wayne Oates back in 1971.

Oates said workaholics had “an uncontrollable need to work incessantly”, and called it an addiction. It’s a real mental health condition, and like with other addictions, it manifests as the inability to stop doing something.

So it basically means working really long hours, does it? Who is most likely to become a workaholic? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

What is the cocktail party effect? Apr 17, 2026
    Show notes

Imagine you're at a noisy party. People are everywhere: overlapping conversations, clinking glasses, a constant buzz of sound. And yet, in the middle of all that noise, you suddenly hear your name being called. Instantly, your attention shifts to that one voice.

This ability to pick out a specific sound among many others shows how our ears, and especially our brains, can isolate meaningful information in a sea of noise. Scientists call this phenomenon the cocktail party effect.

How was this effect discovered? But how is that possible? And does this “superpower” have limits? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

What is hobby dating? Apr 17, 2026
    Show notes

Perhaps you've already experienced that awkward feeling on a first date when you don't really know what to say to each other. Having a drink or going to a restaurant are great activities, but they don't always add much to the conversation. So, if you run out of questions you are often just left staring into each other's eyes and hoping for an opportunity to arise so that you might make a quick getaway! But this might be soon a thing of the past with the rise of the ‘hobby date’ in other words a date organized around an activity.

The idea is to introduce your date to something you already enjoy and sharing the experience together. This can take completely different forms, depending on each person's tastes. It might be a cultural outing to a museum, a hike in nature, an arts and crafts class or even cookery lesson. The idea is to choose an activity that you love or are curious about and then invite your partner to take part in it with you.

What does this involve? Didn't this already exist before? Do the same activities often stand out? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

Why are some people constantly sexually aroused? Apr 16, 2026
    Show notes

The condition we’re going to talk about today is pretty rare. It affects around 1% of women, but it can really disrupt the lives of those who suffer from it. Persistent genital arousal disorder, or PGAD for short, was officially identified by the medical community back in 2001, when Sandra Leiblum and Sharon Nathan published an article about it in The Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy. At the time, they called it persistent genital arousal syndrome, and identified five specific criteria for diagnosis.

These were then expanded by the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health in 2021. According to that organisation, PGAD refers to “persistent or recurrent, unwanted or intrusive, distressing sensations of genital arousal”. It is “most commonly experienced in the clitoris but also in other genito-pelvic regions” and “may include other types of genito-pelvic dysesthesia” like buzzing, tingling, burning, twitching, itch or pain.” The minimum duration for a diagnosis is 3 months.

Are you saying it’s like having a constant orgasm? So where does it actually come from then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

How small is a micropenis? Apr 16, 2026
    Show notes

Penis size is often wrongly linked to notions of masculinity, and it’s an issue that causes a lot of insecurity among many men. Now, the term micropenis is used to refer to a penis that falls well below the average size.

Bear in mind that from a scientific standpoint, there isn't a strict definition of a normal penis size is. According to Medical News Today, the average penis length is “probably around 5.1 to 5.5 inches”, which is smaller than most people think.

Why do men place so much importance on penis size? What exactly is considered a micropenis size? Can surgery treat a micropenis? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!
