Today on Diversified Game, Kellen Coleman sits down with Jessie Elliott of The Hummingbird Lion for a powerful conversation about adoption, childhood trauma, race, identity, family separation, relationships, healing, and rebuilding your life.

Jessie is Korean and Black and was adopted from South Korea at age 12 into a white evangelical family in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Her story includes separation from her biological family, life in an orphanage, childhood trauma, racial identity struggles, and survival patterns that followed her into adulthood.

Then, at age 50, everything changed.

After using AncestryDNA, Jessie connected with a cousin who helped lead her to the Black American father she had never known. She shares the emotional story of finally speaking with him and learning that he had never intentionally abandoned her.

That reunion changed how Jessie understood her childhood, relationships, identity, and the direction of her life.

Jessie also challenges traditional narratives surrounding adoption. She explains why adoption should remain child-centered, why prospective adoptive parents need to examine their motivations, and why understanding trauma can provide an explanation without becoming an excuse.

As both an adoptee and the mother of an adopted Black son, Jessie brings a perspective that goes beyond simply being pro-adoption or anti-adoption.

She discusses transracial adoption, international adoption, foster care, attachment, race, Korean adoption history, biological family reunification, and what she believes needs to change inside the adoption system.

Jessie also explains how she returned to college in her 50s. At 52, she says she barely knew how to copy and paste. Today, she is researching, writing, speaking, consulting, and creating resources around trauma, human development, and adoption.

She also discusses her book The Hummingbird Lion, her Retrain Your Brain program, adoption workbooks, coaching, consulting, and speaking.

Sports Social Work Is Booming: NIL, Athlete Mental Health & Careers | Dr. Matthew Moore

Dr. Matthew Moore joins Diversified Game to break down the rapidly growing field of sport social work and what it actually takes to build a career helping athletes beyond the scoreboard.

Dr. Moore is Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Kentucky College of Social Work, co-founder of the Alliance of Social Workers in Sports, founder/editor of the Sport Social Work Journal, and a leader in sport social work education and research.

We get into the questions people usually avoid: Do sports social work certificates actually help you get hired? Are relationships and real athletic experience more valuable than credentials? Should social workers pursue a PhD or DSW? Why are many PhD programs funded while DSW programs often are not? Where does AI help research, and where does it fall short?

The conversation goes deeper into NIL, athlete protection, dual relationships, financial literacy, youth burnout, international athletes, recruiting in Africa, and the danger of making athletic identity a young person’s entire identity. Dr. Moore explains why collegiate and community sports are seeing some of the strongest growth opportunities for social workers and why social work, psychology, psychiatry, coaching, and athletic training should work together instead of competing.

50+ Years Advising Powerful Leaders: Start With the Truth | James Lukaszewski

James E. Lukaszewski has spent more than five decades advising executives and major organizations through crisis, leadership problems, reputation threats, and difficult decisions. In this episode of Diversified Game, James explains why leaders keep repeating the same mistakes, why wisdom comes from recognizing patterns, and why the best advisors sometimes have to tell powerful clients what they do not want to hear.

We also discuss his “Seeking Forgiveness” framework, when to walk away from money, why truth has to come first in a crisis, how he tripled his rates and kept his clients, his return to college as an older student, and his concerns about AI safety and regulation.
