    Making Your Practice Recession-Proof Jun 22, 2020
    Show notes

The country is slowly easing lockdown measures and soon, both small and large businesses will resume operations - but I don’t think we’re out of the woods yet. The last two months have been ugly from an economical perspective and a recession is no longer a “what if,” but a probability. If you’re like most business owners, you have an emergency fund, but you probably used most of it during the lockdown.

Can your business survive the next six months if a recession hits the country? What measures should you take to make sure your practice is recession-proof?

Today, I share some of the ways I will be preparing my practice from a potential recession period. I discuss when I think the recession will happen and how long it will last. I explain how this recession will be compared to what happened in 2008 and describe some of the services you should stop offering if a recession does happen. I also explain how to identify which team members to let go of first when push comes to shove.

“The pain of not having two months of production in the overall global economy will catch up to us.”

This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:

    ● How I plan to prepare for a recession.

    ● My recession predictions for the coming months.

    ● How you can get clear with what type of dentistry you’re going to offer.

    ● Reverse engineering the way you run your practice.

    ● Improving customer-dentist relationships through emails.

    ● Cutting back on extra services during a recession.

    ● The services you can reduce or remove when a recession hits.

    ● Determining the team members you should let go.

    Our Favorite Quotes:

    ● “Start increasing your emergency fund. Now is the time to start putting money away.”

    ● “During a recession, we have to take things off our menu.”

    ● “Fine-tuning your sales process is part of getting the team clear.”

5 Ways to Improve the Culture of Your Practice Jun 15, 2020
    Show notes

When it comes to running a dental clinic, or any business for that matter, culture trumps everything. The culture you cultivate in your practice dictates how well your team responds to your leadership as well as the smoothness of each patient interaction. However, many business owners don’t quite understand the difference between having a culture and simply having a “Do’s and Don’ts” list.

How do you build the right kind of culture for your practice?

In today’s episode, I discuss how business owners can properly uphold a harmonious culture for their practice. I share why I prefer the term “team member” over staff and what it means to be transparent with your team. I discuss why it’s more important to set criteria when it comes to firing members than it is to hire them. I also share some small yet effective tricks you can apply in your practice right now that can directly improve your business culture.

“Ultimately, if you don’t know where you’re going, how is everyone else supposed to know?”

This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:

    ● Why I don’t agree with the term “staff” for team members.

    ● How you can clarify your foundation and direction.

    ● Communicating your plans to your patients and community.

    ● Establishing criteria when you need to terminate a team member.

    ● How you can build more rapport with your team members.

    ● Why you should consider leaving and entering the office through the backdoor.

    ● How business owners can lead by example.

    Our Favorite Quotes:

    ● “Coaching is a two-way street where people grow from what you say to them and what they’re able to say to you.”

    ● “Train your team members to have a responsibility to spend 5 minutes with you every week, unplanned.”

    ● “Don’t get fixated on who you hire; get fixated on who you fire.”

When Your Dental Practice Is In The Crosshairs of Protest and Riots with Dr. Brett Wells Jun 08, 2020
    Show notes

Being a strong leader is very challenging even when things are running well. Making sure that everyone is on the same page, that work is done correctly, and all team members get the attention and support they need to thrive isn’t an easy task. When you add in any external complication, being a strong leader is even more difficult.

When your business is experiencing a crisis, your attention is pulled in a million different directions. Imagine when another crisis strikes you when you are just getting out of the previous one. Dentists, especially those who are practice owners, have additional stress, and it can be difficult for our teams to focus on their jobs with so many other factors weighing on them.

As the owner and leader of an organization, it’s your job to support your team to remain efficient and ensure each member is taken care of — but when you’re also feeling the external pressure of whatever crisis you’re going through, it’s difficult to know what to do.

In this week’s episode, we talk with Dr. Brett Wells, the Owner/ President at Wells Family Dental Group and the Founder/CEO at DentalHQ, who shares his experience of the two months shut down due to COVID-19. He also discusses what to do when one team member tests positive for COVID-19. Dr. Brett shares how emotionally he got when he watched live on the news when someone threw a brick at his dental practice’s front window located in the heart of Downtown Raleigh. He also shares how so many people reached out to show support. He explains how local and state leadership failed for him.

This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:

    ● Three business crises in a short period of time

    ● Dealing with team member testing positive for COVID-19

    ● Being a strong leader for your organization during difficult times

    ● How local and state leadership fails to business owners

    Our Favorite Quotes:

    · “The whole COVID-19 crisis has been a crisis of leadership.”

    · “I was prepared to lose a lot of my team members over COVID-19.”

    · “The first thing to do is to mentally prepare your entire team before something happens.”

    · “And they pan-over the camera really quick and I saw someone throwing a brick at my front window.”

    · “Now we are the main picture in the local news about the clean-up effort.”

    · “We are a tight industry, but so many have reached out.”

    · “It was more the emotions felt than the physical damage.”

The 3 Questions to Ask Before You Invest in Your Practice Jun 01, 2020
    Show notes

Business owners know a lot about investments and risks, but not everyone knows the value of whatever they spend their money on. More than just keeping up with the Joneses, you have to make sure that the money you use not only improves your business efficiency, but also the patient experience.
How do you know if the benefits not only outweigh the risks but also touch your customers? When should you update a piece of equipment? How many should you add to your team for it to have an effect on your practice?
In today’s episode, I share my thoughts on setting your financial priorities according to the value your practice will get from them. I discuss the three questions you should ask before you spend money. I explain why I think most equipment should only be maintained for five years. I also describe some examples of investments that will directly improve the patient experience.
"Borrowing money should provide a return because you're taking a risk."
This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:
    ● What you can expect from the podcast in the coming weeks.
    ● How the money you spend will be noticed by your customers.
    ● What you can purchase or afford that can positively affect the patient experience.

    ● Knowing your return on investments before you borrow money.
    ● How long you should finance any type of equipment.
    ● Why you should invest in your team members before your tools.
    Our Favorite Quotes:
    ● "My return on investments should be based on the risks I take. Because if it doesn't go right, I'm on the hook."
    ● "Efficiencies are important, but it has to result in a change in the way you schedule treatment."
    ● "If we know a piece of technology changes every five years, then don't finance it for more than five years."

4 Questions To Help You ReOpen Successfully with Dr. Tarun Agarwal May 25, 2020
    Show notes

The COVID-19 virus has been extremely difficult for all of us. Beyond the damage to people’s health and well-being, dental practices experienced complete shutdowns in some places. This has led to poorer health over time since good oral hygiene is directly linked to better overall health. Dentists need to prepare for a new “future” in dentistry for the time being. The proper time and way to reopen our practices involve many factors. Dental practices and team members need to prepare for the new policies they will need to put into place to begin seeing patients again.
In this week’s episode, we talk about four important questions to help you reopen successfully.
We don’t know what to expect, how the first week after reopening will be like, or even how our patients will react. What we do know is that there are these four things that can help you go faster, better, and the way that you want. I explain ways to let people know that our dental practice is open and safe. We also talk about what can we do to reconnect with the two months of patients that we have to reschedule due to the pandemic and what can we do to fill any last-minute cancellation.
These four questions are general recommendations for dental offices to consider as they design and implement their own protocols. Every practice is unique, and their solution will be as well. As we learn how to treat patients within our new circumstances, offices should expect to return to a full schedule soon.
This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:
    ● Podcast review.
    ● What are we doing to let our patients know that we are open?
    ● Ways to let people know that we are open.
    ● Asking patients for reviews.
    ● What are we doing to let people know that we are safe?
    ● What are we doing to reconnect with the two months of patients that we have rescheduled?
    ● What can we do to fill any last-minute cancellation?
    Our Favorite Quotes:
    ● “Let your current and prospective patients know that you are open.”
    ● “We should be doing social media posts about being back.”
    ● “Ask your patients about leaving reviews reading how they felt coming back.”
    ● “People are just looking for reassurance.”
    ● “You need to be confident that you are doing everything possible.”
    ● “It should never be you singing on the top of the mountain about how great you are, it should be your patients singing on top of the mountain about how great you are."

Money Tasks with TBone May 04, 2020
    Show notes

During this crisis, your practice is shut down, you can’t go anywhere, and the most productive part of your day is when you browse your phone to see when the lockdown will be lifted. You can do all that or, if you’re like me, you can also try to review your business finances and see where you can try to save more money. In today’s episode, I discuss the factors you have to consider when you account for your business’s overall finances. I explain how you can plan for the right amount of emergency fund, how much you should have for your business and the tools you can use to keep track of your spending. I describe the plans I put in place before this crisis happened and what I will try to implement moving forward. I also discuss loans, paying them early, and why I prefer liquidity over cash.
