When asked to be the Master of Ceremonies at a Deer Summit, you say "heck yes"! Fred Allard, Director of the Rockingham Fishing and Hunting Expo, threw out the idea. On a cold January 2018 day in New Hampshire our own Jay Scott gathered along with Neil Pendleton, Todd Mead, Bobby Sholan, Rodney Elmer, Jim Gallagher, and Dean Vanier to discuss many concepts surrounding deer and deer hunting.
Amongst the concepts and questions for the panelists were:
- How do you use scent as a deer lure?
- How do you hunt early-mid-late deer season?
- How do you start a mock scrape?
- What's a shooter buck to you?
- Why is it important to bring young hunters into hunting and how do we do it?
- What's your favorite and memorable deer hunt?
- Do you use scent control and if so, how do you use it?
- In one sentence, what advice would you give to other hunters?

HERE ARE THE PANELISTS
Neil Pendleton
Neil, a resident of New Hampshire, has 24 years of hunting experience and has hunted in four different states, including New Hampshire, Ohio, Massachusetts, and his home state of Maine. Neil believes persistence and passion are the key factors that contribute to his success. Neil currently has five collective entries in the New Hampshire and Maine Trophy/Big Buck Clubs. Of the five entries, three were with a bow, one with a rifle, and most recently, in 2017, with a muzzleloader. In 2015, Neil arrowed the buck of a lifetime – a buck he hunted for 1,490 days, spanning 5 seasons. Neil was a featured guest on Episode 175 of the Big Buck Registry Deer Hunt Podcast.
Todd Mead
Todd was introduced into hunting in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. After years of hunting success in the big mountains, he decided to venture to public lands across the country to see if he could locate and take big bucks in different areas across many states. He hunts primarily with archery equipment outside of his home state, but uses a rifle while in the Adirondacks. Todd was a featured guest on Episode 130 of the Big Buck Registry Deer Hunt Podcast. Todd is also an outdoor writer and author of 3 books about whitetail deer hunting.
Bobby Sholan
Bobby was born and raised in the woods of northern Vermont. He has successfully hunted whitetail deer for 23 years now, while bow hunting for whitetail for 20 of those years. He has hunting experience in several states including VT, NH , ME , MA , PA , Ohio and Ontario. Bobby uses trail cameras to target the biggest deer in an area and uses other tools including maps and year round scouting. Bobby adapts to the seasons and changing weather and although has killed more deer with archery, he is able to track in snow and setup on pitch points to ambush an unsuspecting bucks.
Rodney Elmer
Rodney is a professional taxidermist of 32 years and owner of Mountain Deer Taxidermy. In addition to being a life long deer hunter, he is a chief hunter’s safety instructor and range officer in his home state of Vermont. As an outdoor educator of many years his straight- forward, make-it-work hunting style has earned him many big New England bucks. His rising YouTube channel focuses on common sense, family hunting experiences, love of the natural world and outdoor education mixed with humor.
Jim Gallagher
Jim lives in Methuen, MA. He shot his first deer with a bow in Vermont when he was 14. Jim’s father, unable to walk due to complications with MS, would drive Jim to Vermont every weekend, and wait in the car while Jim hunted. For the passion and love of the sport Jim taught himself how to hunt efficiently and successfully, and to date has harvested 191 deer with a bow. Jim has spent a lifetime testing, developing and creating an educational bow hunting DVD of his favorite secrets and techniques to help bring others many years of success in hunting whitetails.
Dean Vanier
Dean has over 40 years of experience hunting the New England woods and 25 years in the Deer Hunting Industry. Dean endlessly shares his wealth of knowledge and sure-fire hunting techniques in his seminars including how to use deer scent lures to defeat a whitetail’s defense mechanisms, how deer responded to the 3 phases of the rut, how to anticipate where deer will be during these phases, and how bring deer to you. Dean hunts using deer calls, mock scrapes, and deer lures, specifically with his own brand of deer scents called Northwoods Common Scents. Dean insists that the future of hunting depends greatly on youth of today and it is our responsibility to pass on this great tradition.
