Fordlandia, Hilariously Failed Utopia | Case File #111 May 04, 2022

Show notes

In the 1920s, Henry Ford, inventor of the assembly line, tried to create a utopian capitalist city in Brazil. It was essentially a slave camp. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, American companies discovered a wealth of natural resources in Central America and basically decided to take it for all its worth. Tons of American corporations pillages the countryside, taking over countries, buying up all their land, and forcibly becoming their largest source of economy. In 1928, Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company, tried his hand at it with a rubber-mining company town he dubbed Fordlandia. It was a hilariously epic failure. -- Get the Mystery Treehouse Simple Code Hybrid Album and Comic! https://bit.ly/simplecodecomic Watch the Simple Code Comic Album Video Trailer! https://bit.ly/simplecodetrailer -- Join our Discord server! https://bit.ly/deepcutsdiscord -- Pick up some Deep Cuts T-Shirts and other merch! https://bit.ly/deepcutsmerch -- Get the official Deep Cuts shoulder patch! http://bit.ly/deepcuts_patch -- Listen to our album, a 9 song rock opera about the rise and fall of Napster! https://open.spotify.com/album/6INdubx1dAEKNwuoWzs9Oo?si=z4ljoBAYTFqRXKWVzvWEfg Learn more about your ad choices. The Cute Copaganda of Sam & Max | Case File #110 Apr 27, 2022

Show notes

It was an indie comic that became a seminal 90s point & click adventure game. Its the little franchise that could and still endures to this day. In the late 1980s, Steve Purcell created Sam & Max - a zany, madcap comic about a buddy cop duo of a talking dog and a weird bunny rabbit creature named Sam & Max. Then he got a job as an animator at the famed Lucasfilm Games studio. Eventually, he was approached to make a game based on the characters. For the next few decades, this franchise persevered solely based on Purcell's unstoppable insistence on cheerleading for these two delightful characters. And, somehow, we've gotten dozens of pieces of media about these beloved talking animals.
