Decorating with Dishes Jun 29, 2018
    Show notes

Don't let your dishes just sit in your cupboards. Don't you know they are waiting for you to play! Anita, Kelly, and Yvonne say, GET OUT YOUR DISHES AND PLAY!!! We have lots of ways to decorate with dishes.

Vintage or new, dishes are made to be seen in every room!

HomeGoods is a great source for dishes and especially white dishes and dishware!!!!

Vintage shops have BEAUTIFUL, inexpensive china for pennies on the dollar! Make sure you visit your local shops!

Yvonne's favorite plates are those on pedestals... white cake pedestals! Oh, be still my heart! You can see some great ways to use cake pedestals HERE

Like other decor, dishes look best if grouped in a limited color palette!

The more en-mass dishes are the more striking they look! Group or stack like dishes!

Platters are a big favorite of ours! Think about using a platter as a tray! What a great look! Glue little metal feet to the bottom of a platter to make a one-of-a-kind tray.

Crazing is a naturally occurring process in older dishes. Tiny line appear and actually add to the beauty and patina of dishes. Don't be to show them off!

Hang plates and lids etc on the wall. Use hidden hooks. Instead of them being symmetrical on the wall create an asymmetrical design to imitate movement.

Yvonne like DISC plate hooks and you can find them HERE

You can see the best trick for hanging dishes HERE

See Kelly's beautiful pink floral vintage dishes in a charming tablescape HERE

One of Yvonne's favorite uses for dishes is as risers. If you need a little height in a vignette or arrangement pop whatever it is on a stack of dishes! Instant riser!

Use small dishes to corral rings for jewelry, as a soap dish or to dump loose change. Yvonne puts her electric toothbrush on a tiny square butter pat plate. Fun idea!

Fill bowls and platters and cake stands with seasonal decor!

If a piece of art or a hutch is a little too small to fill the space add dishes to the wall on either side.

Use vintage cups to use as a scoop or a measure. Many vintage cups actually measure 1 cup.

Grab a bunch of silver spoons and put them in a small pitcher and use them as tasting spoons when you cook!

We all LOVE dishes and use them every day in decor! How about YOU?

Need help with your home? We'd love to help! We do personalized consults, and we'll offer advice specific to your room that typically includes room layout ideas, suggestions for what the room needs, and how to pull the room together. We'll also help you to decide what isn't working for you. We work with any budget, large or small. Find out more HERE

1 quart sliced dill pickles, drained
    ½ cup tarragon vinegar
    2 ¾ cup sugar
    2 tablespoons pickling spices

Combine sugar and vinegar, let stand at room temp until sugar dissolves, about 4 hours. Put picking spices in a square of muslin. Tie up. Return half of pickles to jar with half of sugar syrup. Add spice bag and remaining syrup. Refrigerate. Let sit for 24 hours before use.

    BEA’S POTATO SALAD
2 potatoes, peeled , diced, and cooked
    3 stalks celery, chopped
2 hard boiled eggs, peeled, and sliced
1/4 cup Bea’s Sweet pickles, chopped
1/4 to 1/2 cup Bea's Sweet Pickle juice
1 to 3 tablespoons yellow mustard
    Mayonnaise to taste
    Salt and pepper

Let potatoes cool; combine potatoes, celery, egg, and sweet pickles. Add small mustard, mayonnaise, and sweet pickle juice, along with salt and pepper to taste.

Now raise the flag and start the parade you are ready!!

Steps to Create a Timeless Kitchen Jun 25, 2018
    Show notes

Creating a timeless kitchen is easier than you think. If you are designing a kitchen, think about the elements that are not trendy. Think of things you can add that have been in style for a long time. I like to use white subway tile, white cabinets, with black, white or gray counter-tops. Marble, white granite, gray quartz or quartzite are all classics. If something looks very '2018' then it's won't be in style for the long haul.

Be careful about choosing the counter-tops, appliances, and the cabinet style. Avoid the trendy things, since the trendy things will make your kitchen look dated before you know it. The big ticket items are so expensive to replace that you want to choose wisely.

Set a timer and race against it!!!!! You can get a whole lot done if you work fast!

A vignette is an easy and quick idea to add to a room! Or switch out things in the vignette!

Get rid of all the magnets and art on your frig. Instant freshen up! Make a bulletin board of kids artwork on a big bulletin board instead.

How about framing kids artwork instead. Display their artwork where they can see it. We also love Chat Books to make little books of art etc of our kid's work!

Clean up a spot in your home! Find a messy spot (we call them hot spots) and clear and clean it off!

Take one thing out of a room. Or add one thing! Take out things you don't like in a room and add only what you love!

Shop your home! Nothing is more refreshing than finding something you already have and finding a new place for it.

If you need a new piece of furniture, shop for it online. You can see Yvonne's favorite funky chair HERE

Rotate your artwork! Or really anything in your home.

Get out your dishes and add them to your decor!

Pick one spot and concentrate on it.

    Add flowers to a room.

Harness the "power of three"! A tri of decor items will look amazing!

Go through your stack of mail, magazines etc. Spend 10 minutes getting rid of it!

See how to declutter HERE. You can decide how long you want to spend every day! 10, 20, 30 minutes a day accumulates and makes a very organized home!

See Anita's great post about THE SECRET TO LOOKING ORGANIZED HERE

Rearrange your pillows in a fresh new way! Chek out Kristy's blog post HERE

Pot a plant in a fun planter. Think about using your fun kitchen bowls.

Make a watering bottle for a plant. It's so pretty and will keep a big plant alive! See it HERE

Add a fun pop of color to your home! See Kelly's HERE

Put a big bowl of seasonal fruit on your kitchen table

Hang a mirror in a room.

Change out the wreath on your front door. Don't neglect your front door! Clean your door and the windows around it. Sweep off your front porch or stoop. Or better yet, hose it down.

How does your front door mat look? Update it or shake it out and sweep all the grime away.

Swap out the small doormat on the inside of your front door.

Listener tip from LeoneW. Take a piece of Formica to fit the base of the cabinet under your sinks. It makes it easy to clean and is waterproof!

The Great Decorating Debate Jun 15, 2018
    Show notes

The next question is... do you "chop" your pillows or not? The 1,000 everyday people asked like the NON chopped look! Some of us are choppers and some not!

Staying with the pillow subject ... should the pillows on your sofa match exactly with your sofa? By 65% people did not like the matchy-matchy look? What would you say?

Yvonne says, "Use your eyes to decide what things are more pleasing to you"!

THe Article we referenced is HERE.

Where should you put a sofa? Most people prefer a sofa against the wall. But we love a sofa that can be "floated" if at all possible. What do you think?

See our BE BRAVE podcast episode HERE

This seems like a no-brainer... what size tv would you like best on a wall? Go big or go home that's what we say! Or you may want to get rid of your tv all together! Go iPad!

What is your favorite bedroom color? You would be surprised at the answers! Pink was the most disliked bedroom color. Can you guess the favorite? It was Yvonne's favorite too! Dark charcoal. It looks beautiful. We all agree don't paint a bedroom green. It is not good for any skin color.

Let's now look at the ceilings in your home. What is your favorite color for a ceiling? The most popular color shown to 1,000 people was a saturated blue. Surprise!!!! We think it as because of the decor and colors of the room itself. What did you pick?

When hanging a trio of pictures and two were the same size and one was smaller how would you hang it. Most people like the smaller picture in the middle of the two larger pictures. And most people love a tri of pictures rather than one small or two together. It's all about the rule of 3.

Symmetry is usually most pleasing to the eye. And bigger is usually better!

Here's the most wonderful little gadget to hang pictures perfectly the very first time. See it HERE

If you were hanging a sofa over the sofa how close to the sofa would you hang it? Another surprise! We like our pictures a little closer to the sofa. Most people liked a large picture almost perfectly between the back of the sofa and the ceiling. We think... way too high!

Here's a biggie... let's say you have small-ish windows and need to hang curtains. How high would you hang them and how low will you let them fall? We say hang them as high as you can and let them trouser pleat on the floor or puddle.

Do's and Don'ts of Mixing Wood Tones Jun 13, 2018
    Show notes

Oh there is A LOT to mixing wood tones and getting it right. No surprise as there is a lot of wood in the world, in the structure of your house and in the decor you choose. We have so many tips to share - the bottom line is, YES - mix wood tones. Listen in so you get it right...
For example, Anita got it so wrong once she "HAD" to move! To avoid that predicament tune in today!

    Choose 3 tones to mix.

We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites

Add in black or other painted pieces. Kelly's favorite mat black spray paint is HERE.

Balance the various tones throughout the room/house.

Don't be matchy- matchy with your wood pieces - add in a rattan side table to break up all the wood. And use sisal/jute rugs.

Easy Ways to Add Character To Your Home Jun 08, 2018
    Show notes

Does your home exude character? Does it have a look all its own? Adding character to your home no matter what style will make your home one in a million!

Today let's talk about what we can do to add character to our homes.

One way to do add character is to replace the doorknobs and look for vintage ones like crystal.

Look for little things to add to your home like a tassel hanging from a doorknob or lamp.

Add shutter to the back of your home and replace a solid door with one that has windows.

Add the street address to a transom or sidelights of your door. You can have it painted on or use frosted details. I have the letter "P" on one of the sidelights and it's just a frosted decal. No one is the wiser... until now!

Molding is a great thing to add to your home to give it a more custom look!

Replace hollow inside doors with great solid wood ones.

Add ceiling medallions to your chandeliers.

Add planking to your walls or ceilings.

Walk around your home and make a list of all the little details you could add to add character to your home.

If you have wall to wall carpeting on your stairs you might want to think about ripping it out and painting the stairs or if you have good wood underneath the carpet and add a flat pile runner.

    Add a french chair

Add a statement piece to each room.

Find a vintage mantel and fake a fireplace.

    Update your chandeliers.

    Paint ceilings a different color.

Use vintage corbels as decor in your home

You can paint the stair rails and spindles. Yvonne painted her golden oak stair rails high gloss black and the spindles white.
