    Show notes

Yesterday, we gave an overview of how we researched and produced the season countdown over the summer, starting at the end of May and going all the way up until the day before the first game of the season.

Today, Dawgman's Scott Eklund and Chris Fetters go through days 99 - 50, remembering some of the days/jerseys that featured some of the biggest names in Husky history. Steve Emtman, Lincoln Kennedy, Danny Shelton and Austin Seferian-Jenkins are just some of the names they talked about.

It's the bye week and since there isn't as much football business as their normally is, we thought it would be a great time to look back at some Husky history. Back in the summer, Chris Fetter and Scott Eklund sat down and counted down the 99 days until the start of the season, focusing on each jersey number and some of the top former players who had worn that number.

In part one of our podcast series, Eklund and Fetters talked about researching all of the names as well as some things they didn't know that they discovered during the series.

One was Don Coryell, one of the top offensive minds of the modern era of football. He played just one season for Washington, but went on to a storied coaching career with several teams including the San Diego Chargers which he took to two AFC title games.

They also discuss some of the toughest aspects of doing the series, including what numbers were the hardest for them to write about and why as well as the reasons certain players were written about while others were not.

No rest for the coaches during the BYE week Oct 04, 2021

Washington Head Coach Jimmy Lake met with the media Monday to recap his thoughts on UW's 27-24 last-second loss at Oregon State, as well as what the plan is for the program during their bye week. The Huskies have this week off and then will host the UCLA Bruins on October 16. Game time is set for 5:30 pm and will be televised on FOX.

OSU Post-Game: Jimmy Lake, Sean McGrew, Edefuan Ulofoshio talk about 27-24 loss Oct 03, 2021
    Show notes

The Washington Huskies suffered a 27-24 last-second defeat to Oregon State Saturday night, breaking a nine-game winning streak over the Beavers.

Washington Head Coach Jimmy Lake, running back Sean McGrew, and linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio spoke to the media after the game. McGrew led the Huskies with 104 yards and two touchdowns, while Ulofoshio led UW with 16 total tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss.

DawgmanRadio: Huskies come up short in Corvallis Oct 03, 2021
    Show notes

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - gave their thoughts on Washington's 27-24 loss to Oregon State Saturday night in Corvallis, a game that the Huskies had turned around in a big way, only to give up 10-unanswered fourth-quarter points, including a 24-yard field goal on the last play of the game.

They focused first on the play of the game - the fourth and one that Oregon State was able to stuff with 3:18 to play in the game, allowing the Beavers to salt away the game in Washington territory. The Huskies even looked to allow OSU to score as a means of getting the ball back, but the Beavers figured it out in time to maintain possession and make the game-winning kick with no time left.

They also talked about Dylan Morris's night and how the Washington quarterback had his definite ups and downs. He started out strong, throwing a 44-yard touchdown strike to Terrell Bynum to get the Huskies off on the right foot, but then really struggled from that point onward.

Washington's offensive line went through some in-game changes, including MJ Ale taking over for Julius Buelow at left guard. Will that end up being a permanent change, especially given the fact that Ale was the starting left guard for all of the 2020 season?

And what to make of the Wildcat, and the ability of Sean McGrew and Kamari Pleasant to utilize it so effectively? It definitely makes you wonder what the senior running backs weren't doing early in the season to not get any carries against Montana and Michigan.

The Dawgman guys also heaped praise on Washington's defensive line, who really battled inside against an Oregon State offensive line leading the Pac-12 in rushing. And Edefuan Ulofoshio had a whale of a night inside, racking up 16 tackles, followed by Sam Taimani's 9 tackles and two tackles for loss.

But what to make of the coaches, and especially John Donovan? What happens next? Is the bye week the time the Huskies make a change or do they try to figure something out schematically that can work for more than one or two drives?

DawgmanRadio: Washington/Oregon State Pregame Podcast Oct 02, 2021
    Show notes

Now .500 on the season, the Washington Huskies head down I-5 to the Willamette Valley to take on Oregon State, a team that has seen their confidence rise significantly after a 45-27 shallacking of USC last weekend. The contest will be the Dawgs' first conference road game since November 23rd of 2019 when they traveled to Boulder to play Colorado and came out on the wrong end of a 20-14 decision.

Since leaving Washington following the 2017 season, Jonathan Smith has done his best to boost the talent level and visibility of his alma mater and, even though his record is still just 12–23 overall and 8-18 in conference, he has the Beaver faithful believing they have a team that can compete with the best the conference has to offer week-in and week-out.

Last week, BJ Baylor and Chance Nolan had breakout games against the Trojans and Washington will need to contain both of them when the Beavers have the ball in order to have any chance at pulling out the win. There are plenty of other players to worry about as well, but those two are the offensive difference-makers for Oregon State.

There are also several players on the Beavers' roster who Husky fans will remember from the recruiting trail including Trey Lowe who spent about 18 months on the Washington roster before deciding he wanted to transfer back to his home sate. There is also Tre'Shaun Harrison who was a big-time playmaker at Garfield (Seattle) before he signed with Florida State and lastly, Washington fans should remember the name Tyjon Lindsey, a young man who had offers from the entire Pac 12, including Washington, as well as a few other Power Five programs, but opted to sign with Nebraska before transferring back to the west coast and enrolling at OSU.

The Huskies will have their hands full this week, but as Dylan Morris has gotten more of his receivers to get back on the field after nursing some injuries and the offense has been more productive in reecnt weeks. Kyler Gordon has picked up the slack in the secondary while Trent McDuffie was out last week in their win over Cal in overtime and he came away with a breakout game of his own last week with 10 tackles and two interceptions in the win over Cal.

The guys from Dawgman -- Kim Grinolds, Scott Eklund and Chris Fetters -- take a look at some of the keys for the game on Saturday as well as their thoughts on where things are headed with the Husky football program and what a win over Oregon State could mean as they head into the bye week.

DawgmanRadio: The interns preview the Oregon State game Oct 01, 2021
    Show notes

The Dawgman.com interns - Jack McCauley and Intern Emeritus Luke Mounger - break down what they've seen from the Oregon State Beavers so far this season and how they match up against the Washington Huskies going into Saturday night's game at Reser Stadium in Corvallis.

What to make of Oregon State? They just came off one of the biggest wins in recent program history, beating USC in Los Angeles for the first time in over 60 years. That's huge, and the Beavers are obviously riding a huge wave of momentum.

Starting with the offense, they talk about BJ Baylor picking up the Oregon State run game where Jermar Jefferson left off. And quarterback Chance Nolan took advantage of Sam Noyer faltering against Purdue and is now firmly ensconced as OSU's first-choice signal-caller. Is he similar to Cal's Chase Garbers? And they have a number of smaller, shiftier receivers that could cause problems for a Washington defense that has been solid, but not spectacular so far this season.

Moving to the defensive side, the interns talk about some of Oregon State's key players from front to back, like LBs Avery Roberts, Omar Speights, former Federal Way star Andrzej Hughes-Murray, Jaydon Grant, and Rejzohn Wright. They've given up yards in the passing game, but they've also created a lot of turnovers too.

To finish up, Jack and Luke give their keys to the game for Washington and what they need to do to find a win on the road. They also give their confidence levels of a Washington victory. Are they feeling good about UW's chances, or do they have some reservations?

DawgmanRadio: A Look At Oregon State With Angie Machado Oct 01, 2021
    Show notes

Oregon State is coming off one of the biggest wins in recent program history, a 45-27 shellacking of the USC Trojans. The victory was the first for the Beavers in the Coliseum in over 60 years. This is not the OSU program people have gotten used to over the past 20 years.

Head coach Jonathan Smith has done a good job of installing a new culture at his alma mater, one that has the players believing they can win. He and his staff have gone out and acquired a lot of talent including linebackers Omar Speights and Avery Roberts, the two leaders of the defense, and as well as transfers like quarterback Chance Nolan and receivers Tyjon Lindsey and Tre'Shaun Harrison.

Nolan and tailback BJ Baylor have been revelations for the Oregon State program, replacing productive players and elevating their game now that they have had the opportunity to show what they can do in games.

Dawgman's Kim Grinolds sat down and chatted with BeaverBlitz.com's Angie Machado to get the scoop on the resurgent Beavers and what Husky fans can expect to see Saturday night when the two teams face off.

Jimmy Lake: Oregon State is riding a lot of momentum now Sep 30, 2021
    Show notes

So of course the first question asked to Jimmy Lake before he got back to the business of game-planning for UW's next opponent, the Oregon State Beavers, was about the Beavers.

    Not!

It was about the Seattle Mariners! And who doesn't like a good story of perseverance over long odds and providing the city with a great feel-good story at the moment. But Lake also mentioned how the Huskies can look to the Mariners for motivation, to teach the team lessons on how to compete, how to bounce back from adverse situations, and more.
