Behind Enemy Lines with Adam Munsterteiger Nov 22, 2019
    Show notes

Every week we rifle through our rolodex of contacts to try and get the latest scoop on Washington's opponent. This week it's the Colorado Buffaloes, so we caught up with Adam Munsterteiger, Publisher of BuffStampede.com, the Colorado site on the 247Sports network.

We asked Adam about CU life under first-year head coach Mel Tucker, what to expect from the Buffaloes on offense and defense, the health of players like Laviska Shenault, and more.

Hopkins, Green talk next steps as Huskies find their rhythm Nov 22, 2019
    Show notes

The press got a chance to meet up with Washington Head Coach Mike Hopkins and sophomore guard Quade Green, who both talked about the season to date, and what needs to happen moving forward. The Huskies (3-1) host Montana (1-3) Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena, and then San Diego (2-4) on Sunday.

They'll have Thanksgiving week off before returning to Alaska Airlines Arena for games Monday, Dec. 2 versus South Dakota (5-0) and Wednesday against Eastern Washington (2-2).

The next four games are games the Huskies should win handily if they plan on being Pac-12 contenders. And they set Washington up for their last big non-conference tilt against Gonzaga in Seattle on Dec. 8. Both Hopkins and Green know there's plenty they can get out of this homestand before they get their shot versus the Bulldogs.

UW is experimenting more with different modes on defense instead of just sticking to their 2-3 zone. They are still feeling things out offensively, where they're trying to fit a few blue-chip pieces in place to create a cohesive whole.

Petersen: It's time for the offense to fight through adversity Nov 21, 2019
    Show notes

He's trying to keep his sense of humor about him, but Chris Petersen knows that's very difficult to do when things aren't going your way. And on offense, that's become doubly difficult because things aren't clicking in the pass game.

Are the schemes too complex? Is the quarterback playing up to standard? Are the receivers thinking too much instead of just relaxing and taking care of the basics?

These are all questions that have been asked, over and over, this season. The off-season was supposed to be the time when Washington's offensive woes would get solved, but that hasn't happened. If anything, things have gotten even more inconsistent.

We saw at Oregon State the defense finally come of age. Will the game at Colorado on Saturday night be the offense's time to shine? Petersen isn't sure, but he's curious to see how another week's worth of work will show itself.

On Thursday he spoke to the press about the lessons learned this season, taking those on board and using them to progress through adversity. It's something the coaches take pride in when it comes to teaching the players life skills, ways to overcome obstacles when things don't go as planned.

Petersen also talked a little about the Colorado Buffaloes, how impressed he is with first year head coach Mel Tucker, Laviska Shenault, and even throws a little olfactory dig at Ralphie.

Dawgman Radio: Offense focused on execution more than anything Nov 20, 2019
    Show notes

With their second bye week in the rear-view mirror, the Husky coaches and players have definitely turned their focus to their final two regular season games and they definitely had some thoughts about what the Buffaloes' defense will do on Saturday that could throw them off, but, as always, they said no matter what the opposing defense does, it's more about them and their execution of the plays that are called.

In addition to his focus on the Colorado defense, Jacob Eason was asked about his future and where he is at in the decision-making process as far as the NFL is concerned and he gave his thoughts on that as well.

Tight ends coach Jordan Paopao echoed the "execution" refrain, but also talked about how Jacob Kizer has come along, not only as a player, but as a blocker and the strides that Devin Culp has made after narrowly missing out on making a big catch against Utah while also focusing on Hunter Bryant and what he's done over the past few weeks to see more targets.

Some of the youngsters along the offensive line got a lot of reps during the bye week and Scott Huff talked about their progress and what he's seen from them and also talked about having Trey Adams for a full season (knock on wood) and what it's meant to the overall play of the offensive line.

Adams and Hunter Bryant also talked about executing the game-plan as it's laid out and how the team knows they have an opportunity to close out the regular season well with two wins, but each team they face will present unique challenges and they need to play well in order to get wins.

Carter, Stewart, Hopkins talk after Huskies defeat Maine Nov 20, 2019
    Show notes

Junior guard Nahziah Carter, freshman forward Isaiah Stewart, and UW Head Coach Mike Hopkins all talk post-game after the Huskies defeated Maine 72-53 Tuesday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. Stewart led the Huskies with 16 points and 9 rebounds, while Carter had three first-half Top-10 Sports Center dunks to his ever-growing show reel. Hopkins talked about Washington switching between man and zone, and also about freshman phenom Jaden McDaniels' struggles from the field.

DawgmanRadio: Defensive focus on Ulofoshio, Colorado Nov 19, 2019
    Show notes

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Jack McCauley - spoke to some of Washington's defensive players and coaches about shutting out Oregon State, what they got accomplished during their bye week, and also about their next opponent, the Colorado Buffaloes.

But the highlight of the media session was the conversation with redshirt walk-on linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio, whose 9 tackles, 1.5 sack-effort earned him Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors last week. He talked about coming from Alaska, moving to Las Vegas and using that move as a chance to fulfill his dreams of playing football and going to college.

He also talked about getting the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honor, how he found out, and his reaction. And finally he spoke about coming to UW, how he picked them over some FCS offers, and how he felt like the move to Montlake was always supposed to happen.

"In high school I would always watch their videos and think that was so cool," Ulofoshio said. "I just feel I gravitated to them. And then when Coach Pete talked about life and the culture, I definitely liked the way he thinks, I liked his philosophy. It was easy for me to make that decision."

    The Lineup

    Linebackers Coach Bob Gregory

    Defensive Lineman Levi Onwuzurike

    Outside Linebacker Joe Tryon

    Inside Linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio

    Defensive Back Myles Bryant

    Defensive Back Keith Taylor

Hopkins knows tough non-conference play will pay dividends Nov 19, 2019
    Show notes

The Washington Huskies (2-1) are in the middle of a 9-day stretch where they play four games. The silver lining is that, after their 13-point loss to Tennessee in Toronto, the other three games will be played in the friendly confines of Alaska Airlines Arena. UW Head Coach Mike Hopkins is glad for that second fact, but isn't a big fan of the first. In fact, he said right now he feels more like the head coach of the Washington Wizards than the Washington Huskies.

But Hop also acknowledged that stretches like this one, as well as the challenge of their non-conference schedule, is what helped the Huskies win the Pac-12 regular-season title last year and he expects a similar pay-off after playing a strong non-conference slate this year.

Up next is a matchup with the Maine Black Bears (1-2) on Tuesday night, the first meeting between the two programs. It’s also the first time UW has had seven-straight non-conference games at home since the 2008-09 season.

Hopkins talked to the media about getting through the non-conference schedule, getting better - especially on the offensive end, slow starts, expectations for certain players, and more.

Petersen says staff is working hard to fix offensive woes Nov 18, 2019
    Show notes

Washington Head Coach Chris Petersen took questions from the media Monday ahead of their game at Colorado this coming weekend, and the press took a cue from Pete: instead of asking a ton of questions about the opponent, it was mostly about the Huskies and what's going on with the offense, specifically the pass game.

Petersen said that if it was just one thing wrong with that aspect of the offense, it would be an easy fix, but like most things it's a combination of failures at different times. Sometimes it's quarterback Jacob Eason not finding the right read or throwing it on time. A lot of it has to do with the receivers not getting separation, or making key drops at critical times.

The UW coaches took the bye week to get things together, and while they didn't do the super self-scout they did after the first bye week, they definitely took a long look at why they weren't able to put points on the board at Oregon State, and how that had mostly to do with the passing game.

Pete also took a couple of questions on the Buffaloes, as well as the state of the Pac-12, officiating, and more.

DawgmanRadio: Catching up with the latest news Nov 16, 2019
    Show notes

The guys from Dawgman.com - Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund - talk about Washington's newest 2020 commit, offensive lineman Samuel Peacock from Gig Harbor, and what that means not only for the offensive line numbers this year, but what it also means down the road.

While they're talking about the big men, they also talk about who they think their OL rotation will be next year, as well as depth. The Huskies lose four seniors (Trey Adams, Nick Harris, Jared Hilbers, Henry Roberts), and there are questions as to who will be the starters at three positions.

With the Huskies on a bye week, Fetters and Eklund also quickly roll through the five Pac-12 games and pick their winners. Stanford is at Washington State, ASU is at Oregon State, UCLA is at Utah, Arizona is at Oregon, and USC travels to California.

Finally, Fetters talks a little about today's hoops game, as the Huskies travel to Toronto to play Tennessee in the Naismith Hall of Fame Classic. The game is on ESPN+ (streaming), as well as KOMO 1000AM radio.

Carter's thunderous dunk propels Hoop Dawgs to victory Nov 13, 2019
    Show notes

Washington didn't have much go well for them offensively, but Nahziah Carter provided the fireworks anyway. A high flying, Vince Carter-esque tomahawk dunk by the junior guard with 9:35 to play in the game brought the partisan crowd off their seats and into the game, as the Huskies kept the clamps on Mount St. Mary's and held the Mountaineers to 29 percent shooting on the night, eventually beating the visitors 56-46 Tuesday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.

Isaiah Stewart scored 16 and Carter 14 for the Huskies (2-0). The freshman center added five blocks and five rebounds, while junior forward Hameir Wright scored 9 points and added 7 rebounds.

Vado Morse was the only Mountaineer to score in double-figures, as he finished the game with 10 points.

The win was Mike Hopkins' 50th as Washington's head coach.

Listen to Hop, Carter, and Wright talk about the game here.
