A Coup Against Merit: The 236th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying Jul 31, 2024

Show notes

In this 236th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss the attack on merit that is revealed in the Olympics Opening Ceremony. We discuss also attacks on Christianity, corporate ESG scores, the relationship of “queer culture” to gay culture, and the memory-holing of what democrats used to think about both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Also: what does it mean to be weird (or WEIRD)? Used to be that liberal cities like Portland and Austin were proud to be weird, but now true-blue democrats are being told that being different is unacceptable. This from the same people who are removing the word “mother” from legal documents, and holding segregated meetings for “white dudes” in support of their chosen candidate. Finally, Seymour Hersh reports that the 25th Amendment was invoked to get Biden to step down as nominee.

Pride and Shamelessness: The 235th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying Jul 24, 2024

Show notes

In this 235th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss the lack of transparency from the Secret Service about the assassination attempt on Trump, as revealed in part during this week’s Congressional hearing. Using Colin Ray’s “That’s my story and I’m sticking to it,” we analyze why information is being withheld from the public. Then: Portland Pride—the annual (now in July!) Parade reveals generic aesthetics, soulless corporate sponsorship, the public display of kink, and children taking it all in.

Cave of Mirrors: The 234th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying Jul 16, 2024

Show notes

In this 234th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss the assassination attempt on Trump’s life, and the security and media landscape in which this happened. Are we all in a modern Plato’s Cave that has become a hall of mirrors, such that we can be sitting right next to someone, seeing a totally different reality? How can we evaluate different interpretations—is “lone gun nut” an inherently better or less biased hypothesis than conspiracy? Or are our use of aphorisms—like Hanlon’s Razor, “First, do no harm,” and “correlation doesn’t imply causation”—overused, and applied in places where they should not be? Finally: a poem.

Exquisite Failures: The 233rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying Jul 09, 2024

Show notes

In this 233rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss The Hope Accord, which calls for the “immediate suspension of Covid-19 mRNA vaccine products.” We encourage you to sign it. Then: wisdom from Charlie Munger on why we should prefer a world in which some people are not compensated for their losses (even if they didn’t deserve to lose), over having gameable systems in which cheaters flourish. Then: how the NYT stacks the deck in favor of sunscreen, by asking oncologists and dermatologists. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Finally, how chytrid fungus has wiped out frog populations and species across the world; how fever is used by endotherms like us to clear infections; and new research that finds that frogs like frog saunas, which not only feels great, but helps them clear fungal infections. The through-line: human hubris intervening in complex systems often ends badly.

Common Sense, Inverted: The 232nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying Jul 03, 2024

Show notes

In this 232nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss the 248th anniversary of the founding of the United States, with readings from Common Sense and the Declaration of Independence. Then: deep state vs. shallow state, and how it came to be that news = New York Times ^-1, and health = CDC^-1. Discussing the biggest story of 2020—the corruption and affiliations of what would become the first family of the U.S.—was considered a moral failure at the time. Finally: feminism fails in a spectacular show of rugby and lingerie (as Meghan Murphy said: “Modern feminism wants women either in burkas or p*rn gear”), and we discuss why WNBA star Caitlyn Clark is being competed with in the way that she is.

It’s not Complicated: The 230th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying Jun 19, 2024

Show notes

In this 230th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss air quality in Los Angeles, and how California led the way in making catalytic converters standard in cars across the United States. Now, that regulatory apparatus is being used for less honorable ends, as legislators consider mandating the inclusion of folic acid in all tortilla products. We discuss pre- vs post-industrial diet, what mother’s milk is for, whether adult Americans are sleeping well, and how reductionism helped get us into this mess. Collectively, we have a complicated mindset, mapped on to a complex system. Then: the Pentagon funded an anti-vax campaign in the Philippines during Covid. At the same time that Americans who were hesitant about the Covid vax were demonized and targeted, the government was creating vaccine hesitancy in other parts of the world. The Cartesian crisis continues.

In this week’s episode, we discuss empathy, sympathy, and theory of mind; corporate personhood, psychopathic behavior, and the limitations of humans; kin selection, and reciprocity, both direct and indirect. Then: utopias, and why they fail, from the hero of Er in Plato’s Republic to the Singularity. And we discuss the human need for story, which exists next to, and perhaps deeper than, our need for analysis and logic.
