Have Fun Hacking; Halt & Go... Sep 19, 2024
    Show notes

Start being consistent in your riding today with Daily Strides Premium

It's always great to get out of the arena, so let's do it today - together! And not just to relax and chill, I want to help you use the energy of being out of the arena to improve the quality of your halt. The halt is a movement that many riders fail to use in their training. And yet it is so versatile and, when ridden well, has so many benefits to the overall training for horse and rider.

And of course, being able to stand still while outside of the arena is also really important for both safety and practical reasons... Is there anything as bad as being stuck trying to open or hold a gate? Or waiting for traffic to pass and your horse is refusing to stand still?!

This audio horse riding lesson comes straight from Daily Strides Premium. Meaning you should listen while mounted up and

It's the first of a week of lessons titled "Fun Exercises to Ride While on a Hack". So if you're looking for something different to try with your horse, check out the rest of the lessons at Daily Strides Premium.

So mount up and enjoy the lesson! And, as mentioned at the end, the following 4 audio horse riding lessons that accompany this one are available for you, right now, inside of Daily Strides Premium.

    Happy Riding Lorna

Is your Horse Ignoring You? Or Naturally Laid-Back? Find Out... Sep 16, 2024
    Show notes

Become consistent in your riding - starting today - with Daily Strides Premium

There are a number of things that, when we speak about working with our horses, can feel almost impossible for some riders. This is especially true if your horse is very 'laid-back' or 'lazy'. Other riders are working on channeling energy, etc. and you feel like if you could just ignite a little enthusiasm in your horse, it would be a win!

It's always worth remembering that all horses are different. And some will naturally be less enthusiastic than others. However, this does not have to mean that you must give up your hopes and dreams of ever having a willing partner. However, you may need to begin varying your approach or moving the goalposts a little when it comes to your expectations and desired outcomes.

Deciding how to proceed forward with a horse who does not seem to have as much enthusiasm or interest will require you to answer this question first:- Is my horse naturally laid back or is he simply ignoring me and being unresponsive?

Today, I want to help you begin to decide which of these two is true for your horse - especially if it feels like both of you are going nowhere slowly!

Using Reviews to Transform Your Riding Jul 22, 2024
    Show notes

Can you remember exactly how this date was last month for you and your horse? What about the month before? Didn't think so... And yet, maybe you're like so many other riders and have a complete aversion to writing things down! Why is that?!

I know that I love writing down 'things that have yet to happen'. You know, planning and creating 'to-do' lists. However, when it comes to taking the time to record what actually happened... Not so much! And this is less about being lazy and more about truly believing that I'll remember it all! Honestly! I don't and I bet you don't either, right?! Especially once you get past the two or three week mark.

Regularly reviewing your riding is one of the most powerful tools you have as a rider when it comes to getting feedback. Especially if you don't have a regular trainer or coach to work with.

Understanding How You Influence the Channel of Energy Jul 15, 2024
    Show notes

Become more consistent in your riding with Daily Strides Premium

There is this lovely place that you will reach with your horse in your training where you are working together. Both of you are invested in creating a desired outcome. This point is usually when you can begin to create and maintain consistent contact. It's like an unwritten agreement between the two of you.

And once consistent contact is created and can be maintained for longer periods, you can then begin to think about how that energy will work for both of you from this point…

Impulsion is a word that is bandied about a lot when it comes to horses and riding. Many riders, incorrectly, associate it with speed. The faster you're going the more impulsion you're creating. However, this couldn't be further from the truth… And how you influence the channel for this energy is where it all begins…

This episode of the Daily Strides Podcast sets up a whole week of 5 lessons titled 'Engaging the Energy in a Correct Channel'. If you would like the rest of the lessons for this training, you can get them inside of Daily Strides Premium.

Inspiring You to Become Intentional in Your Riding & Training Jul 08, 2024
    Show notes

Are you happy with where you are right now in your riding journey? If you've been feeling a little stuck or 'behind' regarding progress for you and your horse, today is the day you can begin changing all of that; whether you make it to the yard right now, or not.

The key to feeling better about yourself as an equestrian is to take action and actually do something. However, you might find that you're at this point where the action is the issue! It simply doesn't feel fun, exciting, or interesting anymore!

One of the major reasons riders stop riding is due to their riding and interactions with their horse beginning to feel 'same-old, same-old'. Becoming intentional in your riding is a surefire remedy for this :)

    This is Your Responsibility

As riders, we can often forget that horse riding, just like everything else in life, has a 'honeymoon phase' to it. The initial few weeks or months where it doesn't really matter what happens, it's all good and you love it! And calling it a 'phase' is very intentional because this season of your riding journey will come to an end. Sooner or later.

Are you guilty of getting caught up in the initial 'novelty' of riding or having a horse, only to begin wondering what's gone wrong now that the 'newness' is fading?

No matter where you are as a rider, one of your top responsibilities is to keep the conversation and the work fresh for you and your horse. Looking for ways to weave intentional curiosity and challenges into each interaction. Finding methods and exercises that will keep you both learning and developing.

Becoming intentional in your riding is the most effective way of keeping you and your horse interested in the work – and in each other.

When the Novelty Begins to Wear Off

So, in order for you to become intentional in your riding, you first need something to work towards. A goal or a specific outcome of sorts. This 'something' needs to be both achievable and realistic for you and your horse when combined with your current resources and seasons of life.

What Your OTTB Believes About Contact Right Now… Jul 01, 2024
    Show notes

Contact is something so many riders want to achieve when working with their horses. However, it's always worthwhile remembering that your horse was not born knowing how to be ridden. This means that contact is something both of you must learn about and then refine through your work together.

For many horses, the challenge is made even more difficult when they have been taught something completely different about contact because they had a previous career. Especially if that career was racing.

When working with horses, especially ex-racehorses or OTTBs, we need to understand that there will be both training and re-training involved. And sometimes, the retraining can be a little more challenging than the training due to your horse wanting to 'revert', especially when they feel stressed or anxious.

This episode is the first episode in a week of audio horse riding lessons from Daily Strides Premium. You can get all of the episodes and work on this topic with your horse at https://stridesforsuccess.com/dsp

Tailoring Your Aids to Your Horse Jun 24, 2024
    Show notes

Just like us, all horses are different. They all interact with the world in their unique way. Their reactions and their responses. What would happen if you tailored your interactions with your horse specifically so that your horse can best understand and follow along? If each 'horse conversation' was a special one? If you could tailor your aids to your horse?

When you can begin to become mindful about tailoring your communication to your horse, your training, partnership, and skills will improve much more quickly.

So it makes sense to begin studying your horse - and figuring out what he really listens to in your riding. Especially if you're noticing that your horse is not focused when working together. Or you're just not getting the results you want in your riding.

Confidently Assessing Walk on a Different or New Horse Jun 18, 2024
    Show notes

Whether you've just purchased a new horse, or the opportunity to regularly ride a different horse, the first few rides can feel a little daunting. Especially if you are coming back to riding after a break or you're used to riding another horse. One of the best things you can do is to begin assessing where you are both at in terms of training and communication.

This episode is the first in a week of 5 lessons called 'First Rides for Confidence on Your New Horse' which are available now inside of Daily Strides Premium.

Those first few rides have to happen and if done right, can set a positive tone for both of you as you work together going forward.

And these rides are the perfect time to really pay attention, assess where you both are in your training together and then build your relationship together. In this episode, I will walk you through an exercise you can do while in the saddle to begin figuring out where you both are in your training.

Getting Through Tough Times in Your Riding Jun 11, 2024
    Show notes

Deciding to work towards something specific in your riding is a good thing. And, usually, you will feel positive about that decision, and all the work involved to get there, initially. Until you realize you must 'do' the work - and the novelty starts to wear off a little!

Riding, just like most things, will involve effort. Especially when you are working to improve or reach a specific goal or outcome. And that 'effort' can often result in you quitting!

It's normal to experience all of the excitement at the beginning of something. A new hobby, project, or goal. And it's also 'normal' to notice that as you get further down the road, it can feel hard. This is to be expected and even planned for with your goals.

What's less 'normal' is to find the stamina to push on through that resistance you feel and cross the finish line. To see the goal or project to completion. That takes perseverance!

Is Your Horse 'Herd Sour' or 'Buddy Bound'? Jun 07, 2024
    Show notes

Sign Up for the NEW & Free Groundwork Webinar HERE

    https://stridesforsuccess.com/webinar/

Horses are herd animals by nature. They will always choose to be with 'their herd' when they feel uncomfortable or worried about something. And this can become a big problem for riders. This is partially due to training and development requiring both horse and rider to 'get out of their comfort zone'. Your horse's past training or experiences can also play a big role in how he responds or feels about leaving his 'herd'...

And whether you need to build your horse's confidence in himself and you, or focus on retraining him regarding his expectations and yours, it will require time, patience, and consistency to overcome.

And a 'herd' does not have to mean a whole field full of horses frolicking and running wild in open pastures. It can mean this, but it doesn't have to! Your horse's 'herd' can be him, his horse friend, and the donkey they share the field with. It can be the one horse he lives 'beside' most of the time, in the neighbouring stable or paddock. Or, your horse's 'herd' can also be the two goats he lives with full-time in the small paddock.

Horses, being social creatures, will 'bond' with whoever they spend most of their time with. And once your horse has bonded, it can become quite the performance when you try to separate him from his 'herd'...
