What Texas Case at Supreme Court Could Mean for the Presidency Dec 11, 2020
    Show notes

Texas this week asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear its complaint that the states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin unconstitutionally changed the rules in the run-up to the Nov. 3 presidential election.

Does the Texas lawsuit make a legally sound argument, and how likely is it that the Supreme Court will hear it?

President Donald Trump also asked Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, to argue the case since he is a former solicitor general of the state. How likely is it that to happen, and what could it mean?

Hans von Spakovsky, manager of The Heritage Foundation’s Election Law Reform Initiative and senior legal fellow in Heritage's Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to answer these and other questions about Texas/ complaint.

    We also cover these stories:

    • President Trump announced Thursday that diplomatic relations are being restored between Israel and Morocco.
    • Former Vice President Joe Biden has chosen Susan Rice, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations and former United States National Security Advisor in the Obama administration to be his director of the White House Domestic Policy Council.
    • Senator Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, is calling for a special counsel to be assembled to investigate nefarious business dealings made by Hunter Biden, former vice president Joe Biden’s son.

What America Can Learn From UK Court Ruling on Transgender Case Dec 10, 2020
    Show notes

The United Kingdom has long been on the progressive end of the transgender issue, so when they pump the brakes, America should pay attention, says Nicole Russell, a contributor to The Daily Signal.

A high court in the United Kingdom recently ruled that children 16 years old and younger cannot be treated with puberty blocking hormone drugs, unless a court specifically rules otherwise.

Russell reports extensively on the transgender issue and joins the show to discuss her recent piece breaking down the U.K. court decision. She also explains the media's response to actor Ellen Page, who now wishes to be called Elliot, coming out as transgender, and how the internet plays a big role in encouraging young people to transition.

How Americans View Religious Freedom At the End of a Trying 2020 Dec 08, 2020
    Show notes

There’s no denying that 2020 has been a trying year.

Churches all over the nation closed their doors because of COVID-19. Rioters burned and looted businesses in cities from Portland, Oregon, to Kenosha, Wisconsin. And a contested election has left many Americans concerned for the country’s future.

Amid the trials and tribulations of this year, Becket Law’s annual Religious Freedom Index found that religious liberty is still an essential American value. Becket Law, a nonprofit, public interest legal institute, says its mission is "to defend the free exercise of all faiths, from Anglican to Zoroastrian."

In a survey of 1,000 Americans, 78% said they believe “religion is important to providing stability to society during times of social unrest,” Becket Law reports in its index.

Caleb Lyman, director of research and analytics at Becket Law, joins the show to explain Americans’ current view of religious freedom and whether the nation's perspective on faith has changed during 2020.

Lyman also discusses the survey’s surprising findings regarding how Generation Z (those born between 1997 and 2012) views religion.

    We also cover these stories:

    • Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger says he will recertify the state's election results.
    • Conservatives push back on former Vice President Joe Biden’s pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
    • Federal judges in both Michigan and Georgia dismiss election-related lawsuits from lawyer Sidney Powell.

    Show notes

Exactly how have COVID-19 restrictions on churches and other places of worship affected First Amendment freedoms?

What happened when the Supreme Court last week blocked New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's limits on religious gatherings?

What about the situation in California, where Godspeak Calvary Chapel's pastor, Rob McCoy, reportedly turned his church into a "strip club" so it could stay open?

Zack Smith, a legal fellow in the Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation, joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss these angles and more.

    A Veteran Activist's 10 Principles for Healing America's Hurting Communities Dec 02, 2020
    Show notes

Elitism, not racism, is the biggest obstacle in overcoming poverty, says Robert Woodson, today's guest on "The Daily Signal Podcast." Woodson is founder and president of Woodson Center, a D.C. nonprofit that operated as the Center for Neighborhood Enterprise before a name change in late 2016.

Woodson's new book “Lessons From the Least of These: The Woodson Principles,” examines what this veteran civil rights leader and locally focused activist describes as the wisdom of "healing agents" who are transforming lives in some of America's poorest, most toxic neighborhoods. From such leaders, he says, he distilled 10 principles to guide others who wish to help intervene to change the "worst circumstances" of low-income communities.

What kind of strategies have contributed to rehabilitating such neighborhoods? Can some of those strategies or reforms also be applied to healing the nation's divisions? Bob Woodson fields these and other questions.

    We also cover these stories:

    • Attorney General William Barr says the Justice Department has not seen evidence of widespread voter fraud.
    • President Trump files a lawsuit against Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, arguing that the results of the presidential election in the state are inaccurate because of fraud and other irregularities.
    • Congressional Democrats and Republicans work together to advance a $908 billion bill to provide more COVID-19 relief.

    Show notes

The military strength of the United States again is rated as only “marginal” in a new report, the "2021 Index of U.S. Military Strength", from The Heritage Foundation.

Russia is identified as the main threat to the U.S., but China is identified in the report as “the most comprehensive threat that the U.S. faces, [and] continues to modernize and expand its military and pay particular attention to its space, cyber, and artificial intelligence capabilities.” How should these challenges be addressed?

Dakota Wood, senior research fellow for The Heritage Foundation’s Center for National Defense and the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy, joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss.

    We also cover these stories:

    • Biotechnology company Moderna is asking the Food and Drug Administration to give it an emergency authorization for the coronavirus vaccine.
    • The results of Georgia’s presidential election continue to be contested.
