My Thoughts Monday #25-Mike Caro, Emory and Henry College- Pushing The Pace to Push Us Forward Apr 09, 2018
    Show notes

“Just because we get accreditation or licensure or something like that passes and it has to be done in order for you to be a collegiate strength coach, well that doesn’t mean it will solve those problems, but I guarantee by sharing our information on how we run things, by looking at how we make due with limited recourses or what we do when we have an abundance of recourses to grow our program. That’s going to make this field go forward a lot better and a lot quicker with a lot more importance than if we were just to wait on i licensure or accreditation or wait for someone else to do it.”
This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Learn more about “The Rolls Royce” of bar velocity monitoring here: https://kinetic.com.au/gymaware.html
Mike Caro sits down with us to share how he see’s us as coaches can help give back to the field and build the profession. The idea that he discusses is how we should “push the pace.” This is a leading from the front idea when it comes to research and collaborations within your campus, and sharing more information through blogs, video’s, and podcasts. He then brings it full circle to discuss how this idea can help drive the profession forward and increase the professional view of outsiders about our profession.

Episode 127-Mike Rankin, Drexel University—Building Relationships and Athlete’s For Life Apr 03, 2018
    Show notes

“When you talk about Athlete’s For Life you want to have consistency, your’e buying into the people that were providing you that shoulder to lean on and that advice for you to get better while you were here. If it basically recycled every year where was that relationship? How do yo build a relationship in a couple weeks? You don’t.”
Today we are joined by Drexel University’s Mike Rankin discussing relationship building, not just with your athletes but how they’re continuing those relationships when their athlete’s careers end. Mike has developed a program that they call Athlete’s For Life. What this is is a web platform that is a virtual trainer for his former student athletes.

My Thoughts Monday #24- Devan McConnell, UMASS Lowell-Training is Just a Supplement to Your Culture Apr 02, 2018

“I think most of what we do in training is supplements, it’s supplementation.”
This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Learn more about “The Rolls Royce” of bar velocity monitoring here: https://kinetic.com.au/gymaware.html
Devan McConnell joins us for another My Thoughts Monday to discuss supplementation. Devan breaks this down as not just the nutritional aspect but uses supplementation as a metaphor to what training actually is. He brings it full circle to where training fits and how it needs to connect with your “culture” and what your “why” is with the programming of your athletes and how they fit together. Devan shares with us how he uses anonymous questionnaires to help drive discussions on the past year leading to the athlete’s having more autonomy to push the program forward.

Episode 126-Sam Portland, Ealing Trailfinders-Looking at Fatigue, and How the Playing Surface Impacts It Mar 27, 2018
    Show notes

“What these variables are telling you is how you’re getting to the end product of that jump height essentially, and I think that’s where were we will find with the study, across different positions of rugby, especially sense it carters for a lot of different physical characteristics, that you’ll see how that will change from athlete to athlete.”
Today we are joined by Ealing Trailfinders’ Sam Portland discussing his research on how playing surfaces impact fatigue in his rugby players. After a quick intro, Sam starts right in sharing with us the what’s and why’s he’s looking at with his research. Sam breaks down why he’s looking at jumps on a force plate, what metrics they’re examining, and why he has so much interest in looking at if/what effects there are on fatigue based on playing surface. He then breaks down how the data is being collected and why he set it up in this manner.
We then shift gears and start talking about training and programming. Sam breaks down how he’s seen the idea of “less is more” being very successful with some specific athletes going as in-depth as to share us a breakdown of a “14 day roll over” he had great success with. We also discuss some successful methods and progressions he has implemented to improve “game speed” with his athletes.

My Thoughts Monday #23- Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond- Be Careful, We May Need The Hand That Feeds Us Mar 26, 2018
    Show notes

“There’s been a lot of positives that have come not just for individual coaches, but for coaches in the profession as a whole because of our connections to specific sport coaches.”
This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Learn more about “The Rolls Royce” of bar velocity monitoring here: https://kinetic.com.au/gymaware.html
For this weeks My Thoughts Monday I play devils advocate in the discussion as to where S and C coaches should report and the role in sport coaches in our profession. I touch upon:
    1) Increases in our ability to individualize working with less teams
    2) Increased staff
    3) Increased compensation
    4) Increased involvement within the team
This is all just a devils advocate look at the idea of us completely separating ourselves from sport coaches. There are many things that have had a positive impact on the profession that may go away, or return to the "way it was" not so long ago.

Episode 125-Scott Caulfield, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and Coaching Education Manager NSCA Head Quarters-Pushing The Profession Forward. Mar 20, 2018
    Show notes

“the engagement with our strength and conditioning coaches from high school through professional is growing right now, it’s the best I’ve seen it in my seven years here at the NSCA. It’s come from a commitment that the NSCA said ‘yeah we realize that we need to do better for the strength and conditioning coaches and we are going to do that.’”
Today I am joined by the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and Coaching Education Manager NSCA Head Quarters, Scott Caulfield to discuss projects that are being put together to help better educate our coaches. Scott starts out sharing with us the background to their latest offering, Foundations of Coaching Lifts Course, which is about to go live. This course fills a major void that many have said about the CSCS exam, and that is the hands on coaching evaluation. We then start discussing many the challenges of building courses and events, and the reasoning behind the directions they are moving. The amount of work that goes into these courses and events is staggering, and something the work and effort involved is something people need to understand. Scott finishes off by touching upon the different pro sports groups they’re involved with and what similarities they see across the board, and how engagement across all levels of coaching has moved to the front seat of what he’s trying to do for the profession.

My Thoughts Monday #22- Keir Wenham-Flatt, University of Richmond-Five Reasons To Implement The Minimal Dose Mar 19, 2018
    Show notes

“It’s a fact that every new exercise, every amount of frequency, every amount of intensity, every amount of volume, has a limited ability to elicit adaptation within the athlete. Every time we use it we have begun on the path to reaching a point of zero return, or diminishing return.”
This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Learn more about “The Rolls Royce” of bar velocity monitoring here: https://kinetic.com.au/gymaware.html
For this weeks My Thoughts Monday brings Keir Wenham-Flatt, gives us the five most imprortant reasons why to implement the minimal amount of stress necessary to your athlete’s in their training. These five are:
    1) Prioritizing the stuff that matters
    2) Long term adaptation in the program
    3) Maximizing potential upside vs minimizing potential downside
    4) “Wiggle Room”
    5) Intensity
Mr. Rugby Strength Coaches dives down each of these rabbit holes. He shares where he sees each of these fitting in and how, when looking at these, coaches can be more successful in the development of their athletes.

Episode 124-Dr. Steph Allen, Boston Physical Therapy and Wellness-New Conversations To Have Look At Female Athlete ACL Injuries Mar 13, 2018
    Show notes

“Exposing an ACL ligament to estradiol in a petri dish type thing resulted in less collagen synthesis and less, what they call fibroblast proliferation. So it’s basically, both things are going to correlate to less tensile strength.”
In this week’s edition of The Podcast I get to sit down and discuss Dr. Steph Allen and discuss ACL injuries in female athletes. After a brief introduction Dr. Allen shares with us the research she has been looking into. These two areas are the neuromuscular training (brain-muscle connection) and hormonal contributions to the risk of injury. This conversation was prompted by a discussion with her colleague about what we have seen with our student athlete’s here. This revolved around twins who had multiple injuries at the same time of the year, and many other female student athlete’s who were injured who’s cycle where at similar parts of their cycle when they were injured. This leads us down a rabbit hole of her discussing literature that she has been diving into that discusses the relationship between specific hormone quantities leading to ligament issues, and what we have seen here with our student athletes. Both of us really hope that this leads coaches to have more in-depth conversations with their athlete’s about their cycles and research into when these injuries occur. As the saying goes, where there’s smoke there’s fire, and there seems to be quite a bit of smoke in this situation. Dr. Allen is putting out awesome content as to what they’re doing at Boston Physical Therapy and Wellness on instagram at @stpehallen.dpt. Make sure to give her a follow!
