Sport Specific Training! If you are a strength and conditioning coach you either just smiled or cringed or facepalmed yourself. This polarizing word is something that has a bunch of people shook because we don’t have a definition for it, and there is some confusion with other terms that people think may be synonymous, when in-fact they may not be.

In this weeks episode of The Podcast I get the opportunity to sit down and talk about the idea of sport specific training with Mike Boyle. This has been a bit of a “hot topic” on his instagram based off his 1:00 monologues that he is doing daily. Coach Boyle talks about what he see’s sports specific training is and what his problem is with it, where he sees training and how his needs analysis drives his training, and the idea of the “90%” of training. Mike then discusses where he sees the role of education as a coach and where the idea of looking for people who do the exact opposite of what you do, or at least don’t think similarly to you, and reevaluate some of your thinking. We finish off talking about what are some things that he has changed of late when it comes to “filling buckets” and how he sees sprinting and speed work now.

You see it all the time, coaches on social media talking about training and how “keeping it simple works.” While at times this may be correct, but there are many times where improving an athlete’s physical performance is anything but simple. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss why I feel that this “self talk” that gets shared within our departments could be holding us as a profession back a bit.

The conference season for basketball is here, and it’s a great time to catch up and learn from practitioners at other universities. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I piggy back of some of Mike Snowden’s thoughts from last weeks podcast when it comes to being open to spending time with coaches during the season to talk shop and learn from each other in every realm of coaching, not just the x’s and o’s of training.

In this weeks episode of The Podcast I get to catch up with Buffalo’s Mike Snowden to discuss the process he’s gone through taking over as the Director of Olympic Sports at UB. Mike starts out sharing with us how his learning experiences starting in the Navy, and moving into each position he’s had prior has impacted him as a director. Mike then shares with us how he has utilized resources around town and on campus to better help what they’re able to provide for their student athletes. This cross campus involvement is something that many coaches have issues with, so hearing how someone can connect and build multiple programs is exciting. Mike finishes off sharing with us talking about the NSCA Basketball SIG, and what they’re hoping to build with that. As we enter this “coaching carousel” time of of the year there are some things that we need to keep in mind, but the biggest thing is the idea of “culture changes” that are asked of some coaches. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share my thoughts on how we could possibly do this a bit better and avoid some of the negative circumstances that have brought our profession some extremely negative attention in the recent past.

This weeks episode of The Podcast is an instagram live discussion I was fortunate to have with Fergus Connolly recently. In the talk we go over quite a bit about his latest book, “59 Lessons”. Fergus also dives into some of the issues he sees with “sport science” today, including some of the limitations of tech, and how it needs to impact people because we are a people business. We also talk about his presentation in The Strength Coach Network, and how problem solving is what he’s always been looking to do, and how leadership fits into that. We finish out talking about his involvement as a presenter for The 2019 Seminar.
