**Cult Flav Is Going Off**

Each week, Cult Flav – aka Sarah and Bryn – goof, rant and hyperfixate our way through news, product reviews, questions from you(s?), and occasionally guest interviews…from around the world of home cooking.

Latest Episodes:

We’ve got another first look out today for By Heart, and next week, our big Sift review is going to be out.

By Heart Mini Review: https://youtu.be/P3ZVWKjwFS4
Umma Mini Review: https://youtu.be/McWxu2o_XRQ?si=qTnDYJHyUPgThxWE

We’ll certainly be taking first looks at equipment too and we expect to fold in goofy absolutely rank-type shit, listener questions, and plenty of strong opinions into the mix. We’ll probably do more interviews too, but we want them to be more like the one we did with Sad Papi where we cooked with him IN OUR KITCHEN.

Sad Papi Interview: https://youtu.be/e9LibD4ttTQ

Cooking is the point and we want to lean into that. Less telling, more showing.

Thank you all so much for hanging out with us the last few months. We appreciate all the feedback and how much you played in the space with us while we figured this out.

We're taking questions as always over in the Cult Flav Community: https://cultflav.com/community

👋 Have a great week, we'll see you next Sunday!

Stocking a Kitchen From Scratch, Cutting Boards, Ice Cream (feat. Mei Liao) Mar 23, 2025

Show notes

This week, we’re talking to our friend Mei Liao who runs one of our favorite channels, @daywithmei. She recently made a cross-country move and has started rebuilding her kitchen equipment collection as both an avid home cook AND a food content creator.

Then Mei joins us in answering a listener question about wooden cutting boards, but let’s be honest, Bryn commandeers that question and barfs out a bunch of facts without answering it... (Sorry! Clearer answer below 👇 — Bryn)

And then we round the episode out with an ice cream ranking in a booth at Mamahuhu in San Francisco. Mei was even kind enough to bring in some new flavor combinations that she’s testing out.

“Is it better to have one big wooden cutting board, or should you have multiple for different tasks?” - Silas

Mei suggests shelf liners to add more grip: https://www.homedepot.com/b/Kitchen-Kitchen-Storage-Organization-Shelf-Liners-Drawer-Liners/N-5yc1vZc3xh
Sheet pans for food prep: https://cultflav.com/products/winco-eighth-sheet-pan

Wood:

👍 can sequester bacteria

👍 gentle on knives

👍 doesn't create more plastic

👎 handwash-only, occasional oiling.

Plastic:

👍 sanitizable in a home dishwasher (though some boards can warp)

👍 soft ones (such as LDPE) are gentle on knives (but not dishwasher-friendly).

🤷‍♂️ bioavailable microplastics unlikely(?)

Glass/Steel

👍 Easy to confirm sanitization

👎 Prone to causing injury due to knife slippage

👎 Causes way more knife damage/wear than plastic/wood
