Canceled Too Soon #80 - GCB, aka Good Christian Bitches (2012) Jan 06, 2018

Show notes

They're good. They're Christian. They are allegedly bitches. So it mades perfect sense to call this short-lived comedy series from SEX AND THE CITY producer Darren Starr, STEEL MAGNOLIAS writer Robert Harling, and author Kim Gatlin... GOOD CHRISTIAN BITCHES. (And then there was an uproar so they called it "GCB" instead.)

With Leslie Bibb, Kristen Chenoweth, Annie Potts, Miriam Shor, GCB had one of the best ensemble casts of any tv show in years. But was it really... CANCELED TOO SOON? Critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold cross themselves and take a trek through every episode of the series, and talk about what worked, what failed, and which of the cast members are indisputable international treasures.

Canceled Too Soon #79 - Roar (1997) Dec 31, 2017

Show notes

Heath Ledger and Vera Farmiga got their big breaks in ROAR, a sexy teen riff on BRAVEHEART and HERCULES, about a gang of hot young Celts who do battle with an immortal Roman to save Ireland from oppression. Along the way they rescue banshees, kiss fire maidens, rescue Jesus Christ's personal correspondence and throw spears into heaven... for reasons.

ROAR failed to take off on the Fox Network, but was it possibly... CANCELED TOO SOON? Join film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold as they solve the mystery, walk you through every weird episode of ROAR, and wonder what possible reason the hair department and makeup department could possibly have had to do what they did to Vera Farmiga's bangs.

Canceled Too Soon #78 - Practical Magic, aka Sudbury (2004) Dec 22, 2017

Show notes

Most people know that Sanda Bullock and Nicole Kidman co-starred in PRACTICAL MAGIC, a very surreal supernatural comedy about a family of witches who run afoul of deadly curses, ghostly ex-boyfriends and multiple generations of prejudice.

What most people DON'T know is that PRACTICAL MAGIC spawned a failed tv pilot in 2004 called SUDBURY, starring Jeri Ryan from STAR TREK: VOYAGER, Kim Delaney from NYPD BLUE, and Kat Dennings from TWO BROKE GIRLS.

The PRACTICAL MAGIC television series never actually aired, but still we ask... was it CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold track down this obscure chapter in tv history to figure out what the film did better than the show, what the show did better than the film, and just how weird PRACTICAL MAGIC was in the first place.

Canceled Too Soon #77 - Fishing With John (1991) Dec 15, 2017

Show notes

FISHING WITH JOHN was one of the weirdest talk shows, fishing shows, reality tv shows or shows of any other kind. The series followed composer John Lurie as he invited celebrity guests Jim Jarmusch, Tom Waits, Matt Dillon, Willem Dafoe and Dennis Hopper to exotic locales, where they went fishing. Badly.

That's it. That's the whole series. FISHING WITH JOHN was either a merciless satire of television, a serious meditation on the smaller moments in life, or the mellow predecessor of manic Adult Swim absurdism (or all three).

But was it... CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold analyze a series that practically refuses to be analyzed in the latest episode of the podcast.

Canceled Too Soon #76 - David Cassidy: Man Undercover (1978-1979) Dec 08, 2017

Show notes

The late, great David Cassidy was a tv star, a pop star, a teen heartthrob and - for one short season - a hard-boiled undercover cop infiltrating drug dealers, gun runners, baby smugglers and high-octane grocery store thieves. You know, like you do.

But let's be honest here... was the pop culture curio DAVID CASSIDY: MAN UNDERCOVER canceled too soon? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold delve into every episode and discover that this seemingly absurd TV series was 21 JUMP STREET a decade before 21 JUMP STREET, and POINT BREAK a decade-and-a-half before POINT BREAK, and THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS over two decades before THE FAST AND FURIOUS.

Yes, really.

Canceled Too Soon #75 - Human Target (1992) Nov 30, 2017

Show notes

Our very special JUSTICE MONTH OF JUSTICE concludes with a superhero series that pretty much everybody forgot about: HUMAN TARGET, starring rock legend Rick Springfield as a man who can impersonate anybody, and who uses that technology to impersonate the people he saves and get creepy kicks out of living their private lives.

Rick Springfield wishes he had Jessie's Girl, but does he wish that HUMAN TARGET wasn't... CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold dive into the original TV adaptation of HUMAN TARGET to find out what works, what needed work, and why this just might be one of the worst ideas for a superhero show ever.

Canceled Too Soon #73 - Aquaman, aka Mercy Reef (2007) Nov 15, 2017

Show notes

SMALLVILLE was the only live-action DC superhero show in town for many years, but did you know it almost had a sister series about the adventures of AQUAMAN? From producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar came MERCY REEF, a superhero show that's basically FLIPPER but if the dolphin and the human were the same guy.

MERCY REEF (aka AQUAMAN) never made it past this legendary pilot episode, but was it really... CANCELED TOO SOON? This week, GEEK HISTORY LESSON podcast co-hosts Ashley V. Robinson and Jason Inman join your usual hosts William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold to fish this pilot out of the murk, dissect it, and find out just how close we came to getting a good Aquaman tv series as our JUSTICE MONTH OF JUSTICE continues!

And hey! Ashley V. Robinson and Jason Inman are also the co-creators of the upcoming comic book JUPITER JET, in stores December 6, 2017! Pre-order it now, and follow them on Twitter at @AshleyVRobinson, @Jawiin, @GHLPodcast and @JupiterJetComic!

Canceled Too Soon #72 - The Flash (1990-1991) Nov 11, 2017

Show notes

Before there was JUSTICE LEAGUE, before there was THE FLASH, there was... THE FLASH, an expensive and ambitious live-action superhero series that emerged from the wake of Tim Burton's BATMAN, and bridged the gap between the retro comic book adaptations of yore and a new generation of faithful tv shows and movies.

It's got a huge cult following that continues to this day, but was THE FLASH really... CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold take you deep into all the episodes, guest stars and unexpected connections to shows like BIRDS OF PREY and BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES as their JUSTICE MONTH OF JUSTICE continues!
