Critically Acclaimed #133 | Ennio Morricone, Kelly Preston, The Old Guard, Palm Springs, Relic, Greyhound, Home Movie: The Princess Bride, Castle Freak Jul 14, 2020
    Show notes

CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED is stuck in a time loop! CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED is stuck in a time loop!

This week, William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold say goodbye to composer Ennio Morricone and actor Kelly Preston, and review the new sci-fi action-thriller THE OLD GUARD, the time loop comedy PALM SPRINGS, the slow burn horror movie RELIC, the World War II naval adventure GREYHOUND, and the all-star PRINCESS BRIDE remake!

And this week on THE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED STREAMING CLUB, Bibbs and Witney release CASTLE FREAK from the catacombs! It's one of the lesser known films from the late, great horror filmmaker Stuart Gordon, and it's extremely loosely based on an H.P. Lovecraft story, and it's VERY cheap and VERY gory!

    Ennio Morricone - 2:33 Kelly Preston - 13:38 The Old Guard - 23:49 Palm Springs - 42:36 Relic - 56:11 Greyhound - 1:03:32 Home Movie: The Princess Bride - 1:15:17 Castle Freak - 1:30:36

Star Wars: Episode Zero - The Searchers! Jul 13, 2020
    Show notes

Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are working backwards through film history, using STAR WARS as the starting point!

This week on EPISODE ZERO they take a trek to Monument Valley for John Ford's THE SEARCHERS, starring John Wayne and Jeffrey Hunter as cowboys searching for a lost girl in the American frontier. The film is considered one of the greatest westerns ever made, and it's easy to see why, but its legacy is conflicted and complicated, even though its influence on STAR WARS is clear.

Canceled Too Soon #192 | My Own Worst Enemy (2008) Jul 12, 2020
    Show notes

[NOTE: We apologize for the lower-quality audio in this episode.]

Christian Slater gets his own television series... and so does Christian Slater! MY OWN WORST ENEMY is all about a secret super spy who has a microchip in his brain that activates an alter ego with no memory of saving the world, who has his own completely separate life in suburbia! But when the chip malfunctions and they have to share each other's lives, are either of them up to the task?

MY OWN WORST ENEMY may or may not be the best tv show based on a song by Lit, but was it... CANCELED TOO SOON? William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold explore this short-lived spy series with a twist in the latest episode, and figure out whether it's a great series about middle-aged power fantasies, or a bad series that gets trapped by its own internal logic.

Critically Acclaimed #132 | Hamilton, Metamorphosis, The Truth, Bugsy Malone Jul 06, 2020
    Show notes

There's a million things that CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED hasn't done, but just you wait! Just you wait!

This week, William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold explore the brilliance and understandable criticisms of the hit musical HAMILTON, venture into the gory world of the possession thriller METAMORPHOSIS, and ponder the works of Hirokazu Kore-eda with his new French film THE TRUTH!

And this week on THE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED STREAMING CLUB, Bibbs and Witney unearth one of the weirdest musicals ever made! BUGSY MALONE launched the career of Alan Parker and Dexter Fletcher, with a story about Prohibition Era gangsters played entirely by kids! Sure, it's got great music by Paul Williams, but is that premise just too danged weird to work?

Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are working backwards through film history, using STAR WARS as the starting point!

This week on EPISODE ZERO they strap on jetpacks and fly around with COMMANDO CODY: SKY MARSHAL OF THE UNIVERSE in his very first cinematic adventure, RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON! It's a serialized action series with lots of fist fights, lots of cheapness, and several connections - direct and indirect - to the STAR WARS series!
