Show notes

Explorer's Guide to Wildemount provides everything you need to play D&D on the continent of Wildemount (set within the world of Exandria, the setting for the hit show Critical Role)—a land of war, betrayal, and swashbuckling adventure.

Comprised of four regions, Wildemount provides endless potential for adventure in a land of brewing conflict and incredible magic. Rising tensions boil over into all-out war between the politically dubious Dwendalian Empire and the light-worshiping wastefolk of Xhorhas, supplying a vibrant backdrop for any D&D campaign to explore.

UltraModern 5e Redux Apr 01, 2020

Show notes

Crit Academy covers UltraModern5 Redux or U5, a supplement designed to offer classes, backgrounds, feats, skills, rules, equipment, and opponents for settings outside of traditional ones involving dragons and dungeons, though still employing D&D 5th Edition rules. This book is an expansion of the core 5E rules and thus does not reprint material from core books required for play.

There are new classes presented in Ultramodern5, and although similar in build to those in official 5th Edition licensed products, readers will notice a few notable exceptions.

Firstly, all U5 classes have martial archetype options, and unlike their fantasy counterparts, offer these options at the same levels. Archetypes are no longer bound to specific classes, meaning you can feasibly match any class to any archetype.

There are also classes that are not combat-based—their power is not in how much damage they inflict, but how they can alter the course of a story.

100 Weapon Histories Mar 25, 2020

Show notes

Episode 162: 100 Weapon Histories When playing Dungeons and Dragons some players can spend hours upon hours developing their characters backstory. For some, this may just be how long it takes to decide on a concept that can be explained in a few sentences, while others will write out pages and pages of content. In either case, very rarely does the player include lore and history of their equipment. This simple and minute detail is a huge lost opportunity, not only for the player, but for the DM as well. Today we cover "100 Weapon Histories" by DnDSpeak a list of 100 interesting weapon stories is great for adding fantastic stories to mundane or magical weapons. A player can take their roleplay to the next level but using these histories in their characters background, or adventuring career. These also make for a great DM plot hook. A weapon used to murder a queen? I bet it's famous enough to be recognized by servants of the slain queen.

Puzzles, Predicaments, and Perplexities Mar 04, 2020

Show notes

Adventurers will find themselves tested in many ways during their careers seeking fame, fortune, justice, and truth. Some of these tests will challenge their strength, agility, spellcasting knowledge, and combat skills. Other encounters will require diplomacy, conversation, observation skills, and social interaction. A rare challenge provides elements of both and requires deeper thinking and analysis. Such puzzles are meant to guard treasure and secrets, and present a unique challenge to characters and players. They also suggest a worthy reward lies on the other side.

In this episode we discuss Puzzles, Predicaments, and Perplexities a collection of logic puzzles, brain teasers, and encoded sequences intended to test the problem solving and deductive reasoning of characters and players. These puzzles are designed to be easily placed into any adventure with no additional work, yet also provide guidance on how Dungeon Masters can customize the details to best fit into their own campaigns.
