EP 137: The Beast of British Columbia May 23, 2022

Show notes

The province of British Columbia in Canada was gripped by a string of disappearances and deaths of its young people in the early 1980s. At first, the police thought maybe the missing children were runaways, and didn’t spend too much of their time on the cases. However, when a 9-year-old boy disappeared and then his body was later found, the police realized that 9-year-olds don’t usually run away from home. Eventually, the police would arrest Clifford Olson, who would be dubbed “The Beast of British Columbia”. Listen to this week’s episode to hear about the 11 murders of children from the ages of 9-18 that Clifford confessed to, as well as other possible murders for which he may have been responsible.

EP136: THE WHINY-VOICED SERIAL KILLER May 16, 2022

In the early 80s, a serial killer was murdering women in the twin cities of Minnesota with an ice pick. After each attack, he would call 911 weeping and begging for the police to put an end to his terror. It was only after one of his victims escaped that Paul Michael Stephani was finally apprehended. Fifteen years later, when Paul learned he had terminal cancer, he made a full confession of all his crimes, which included a murder completely off the authorities' radar. Popstar Cyndi Lauper once sang, “Money Changes Everything” and nothing could be more true. People fight about money every day, and it pits family members against one another. Husbands against wives, siblings against one another, parents vs. children…it goes on and on. One such family that was affected by money was the Mack family in Reno, Nevada. When Charla met Darren Mack and they fell madly in love, Darren didn’t mind lavishing his bride with trips and expensive gifts. But when Charla filed for divorce, the wheels fell off the bus, so to speak. Once earning in excess of $40,000.00/month, Darren claimed he only made $5,000.00/month and could afford the financial agreement he made with Charla in Court. But when he was ordered to pay Charla her million-dollar settlement, Darren lost it. He decided murder was the only way to solve his financial problems…but Charla wasn’t the only victim he had in mind.

In 2019, Keyona Griffin called 911 and whispered for them to please hurry because she was about to die. In the call, she told the dispatcher that her aunt had already been murdered and she was going to be next. But the urgency in her voice somehow got lost in translation, and the police left after knocking on her door and getting no answer.
Keyona's death and the murder of her aunt set in motion a sequence of events that resulted in two more people being killed. In 1997, two women were mutilated and murdered on the grounds of a psychiatric hospital in Grangegorman, Ireland. Only months later, a young couple named Catherine and Carl Doyle were slaughtered in their countryside home in front of their four young children. All four of the victims were murdered at the hands of a young father named Mark Nash, who would eventually become known as one of Ireland's most violent and gruesome killers of all time.

During World War II, atrocities committed by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime were horrific. As the Nazis occupied France, the French Resistance movement helped the war effort by spying for the Allies and helping to smuggle Jews from France. Unfortunately, Hitler and the Nazis were not the only evil people preying on the vulnerable during the war. One such man was a Frenchman named Dr. Marcel Petiot. Dr. Petiot used the Resistance as a cover for one of his most horrendous money-making schemes—after he spent his life involved in shady and unethical actions. When Ryan McConniel married Brittany Lee in October 2007, he brought his daughters from his first marriage with him. Ryan believed that Brittany would make a wonderful stepmother to his girls, and he trusted her to care for them while he worked full-time. Toward the end of 2009, Lauren began exhibiting disturbing behaviors, ones that Brittany blamed on the abuse Lauren supposedly suffered at the hands of her mother. Brittany always had an explanation for bruises and problems Lauren had, and even though Ryan knew better, he turned a blind eye to Lauren's increasing deterioration.
