Skip the banter: 00:10:25 (give or take a minute depending on ads)

In June 2011, 20-year-old Indiana University student Lauren Spierer vanished after a night out in Bloomington, leaving behind surveillance footage, conflicting accounts, missing belongings and a final stretch of time that has never been fully explained. Several people saw Lauren severely intoxicated and struggling to walk, yet the men who were with her later gave accounts that did not always match, including differing versions of how she spent her final known 90 minutes and whether she actually left the townhome where she was last reported alive. Over the years, investigators have examined theories ranging from an accidental death and concealed body to abduction, serial killer Daniel Messel and even Israel Keyes, but no direct evidence has established what happened. Fifteen years later, Lauren’s parents are still waiting for the one piece of information that could finally explain where their daughter went. Allison walks through the evidence, the inconsistencies and the details that continue to keep Lauren Spierer’s disappearance unresolved.

Terror in Alaska: Robert Hansen - The Butcher Baker | Ep 263 Sep 20, 2026
    Show notes

Skip the banter: 00:06:10 (give or take a min depending on ads)

Robert Hansen, known as the Butcher Baker, became one of Alaska’s most notorious serial killers after targeting vulnerable women in and around Anchorage and taking them into the wilderness. For years, disappearances, prior allegations, and warning signs failed to bring serious scrutiny, even after 17-year-old Cindy Paulson escaped Hansen and gave Anchorage police a detailed account of her abduction. As investigators connected the murders of women including Sherry Morrow, Paula Goulding, Joanna Messina, and Eklutna Annie, evidence began pointing back to the quiet local baker with a private plane, a hunting background, and an aviation map marked with remote locations. Allison walks us through the Robert Hansen investigation, the failures that delayed it, and the evidence that finally forced authorities to reconsider what women had been telling them for years.

    Show notes

    Skip the banter: 00:09:57

Carly Ryan thought she knew the teenage boy she had spent months talking to online, but the relationship was built around an identity that did not exist. As investigators began looking at the people behind Carly’s online conversations, they uncovered a much larger pattern of deception and grooming. Allison tells Carly’s story with a closer look at the warning signs, investigative evidence, and assumptions that complicated how the case was understood.

Shelly Knotek: The murders of Kathy Loreno, Shane Watson & Ron Woodworth | Ep 260 Aug 30, 2026
    Show notes

    Skip the banter: 00:06:35

For years, the Knotek home appeared to be a place where struggling friends and relatives could find support, while inside, Shelly Knotek’s daughters were witnessing escalating abuse, control, and isolation. As Kathy Loreno, Shane Watson, and later Ron Woodworth disappeared from the family’s life, Shelly offered explanations that those closest to her increasingly struggled to believe. The episode also examines the warnings that surfaced along the way, including injuries, troubling behavior, and a 2001 report to law enforcement that did not immediately lead to intervention. Allison walks through the sisters’ accounts, the investigation, and the details that show how much was happening in plain sight before authorities finally acted.

Bonus: What Happened to the McStays? Aug 28, 2026
    Show notes

Today we’re sharing something a little different: it’s the first episode of a new

podcast from our friends at ABC Audio and 20/20 called “What Happened to the

McStays?” In 2010, in a quiet suburb of San Diego, a family of four seemingly

vanished into thin air. When investigators searched their home, they found the

family’s two beloved dogs unattended outside, rotting food left around the house,

and clothes strewn across the floor. The nation was left to wonder: Did the

McStays leave of their own accord, or did something more sinister happen?

To hear the whole story, follow “What Happened to the McStays?” on Apple

Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you like to listen – or listen ad-free and get the

whole series before anyone else by subscribing to 20/20 True Crime+ on Apple

The murder of Kristin Smart | Ep 259 Aug 23, 2026
    Show notes

    Skip the banter: 00:07:51

When 19-year-old Cal Poly freshman Kristin Smart disappeared after an off-campus party in May 1996, investigators quickly learned she had last been seen walking back toward campus with fellow student Paul Flores. Early delays, inconsistent statements, a mysterious black eye, and later cadaver dog alerts inside Flores’ dorm room raised serious questions, but years passed without Kristin being found. Decades later, renewed investigative work and previously unheard witnesses brought attention back to details that had been overlooked or left unresolved in the original investigation. This listener suggestion from Kelsi, Destanie, and Maya examines how those early decisions shaped a case that refused to disappear. Allison walks us through Kristin’s story and the evidence investigators kept returning to as the search for answers continued.

The murder of Sian Kingi | Ep 258 Aug 16, 2026
    Show notes

    Skip the banter: 00:06:48

When 12-year-old Sian Kingi vanished during a short bike ride home, investigators were left with a yellow bicycle, reports of a suspicious station wagon and several witnesses who had noticed more than they initially realized. As police followed those details, they uncovered earlier encounters that placed the same couple at the center of increasingly serious concerns. Allison tells Sian’s story with a close look at the witness accounts and investigative decisions that began connecting those pieces.
