In this episode, Tim Pilleri & Lance Reenstierna have a wonderful conversation with a writer, historian, journalist and teacher, Stephanie Schorow. While the conversation covers a number of topics, the main focus is the work Stephanie did as she wrote her book, Inside The Combat Zone: The Stripped Down Story of Boston's Most Notorious Neighborhood. Meet the dancers who stripped to punk rock, the cops who tried to keep order on the streets, and the hookers who turned tricks and slipped wallets from gullible tourists. Go beyond the enticing marquees promoting all-nude revues to discover how the Zone—in an era dogged by miserable economics— remained one of Boston’s most profitable neighborhoods.

To purchase any of Stephanie's books, contact your local bookstore, library or visit Stephanie's website at: https://www.stephanieschorow.com/index.htm

Here are some of Stephanie's favorite bookstores if you are in the Boston area:

319 // Titanic Obsessions w/Daniel Stone Oct 05, 2022

Show notes

Welcome to Crawlspace. In this episode Tim Pilleri & Lance Reenstierna speak with Daniel Stone about his new book, Sinkable.

In Sinkable, Daniel spins a fascinating tale of history, science, and obsession, uncovering the untold story of the Titanic not as a ship but as a shipwreck. He explores generations of eccentrics, like American Charles Smith, whose 1914 recovery plan using a synchronized armada of ships bearing electromagnets was complex, convincing, and utterly impossible; Jack Grimm, a Texas oil magnate who fruitlessly dropped a fortune to find the wreck after failing to find Noah’s Ark; and the British Doug Woolley, a former pantyhose factory worker who has claimed, since the 1960s, to be the true owner of the Titanic wreckage.

Daniel is a national bestselling writer on science, history, and adventure. He's a senior editor for National Geographic and a former White House Correspondent for Newsweek. He's a professor of environmental science at Johns Hopkins University.
