Coronavirus news, updates, hotspots and information for 4-02-2021 Apr 02, 2021
    Show notes

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for April 2nd, 2021.

The World Health Organization says Europe’s immunization campaigns are “unacceptably slow” and that’s risking prolonging the pandemic. Its regional director noted that to date, only 10% of Europe’s population has gotten one dose. The European Union sets that number for its 27 nations at only 5.6%.

Two more over the counter, rapid result COVID-19 tests that can be done at home are on the way in the U.S. FDA approval should vastly expand the availability of such tests even as U.S. testing numbers continue declining. The tests involve a nasal swab and a test strip with results in 10 to 20 minutes.

In Canada, Ontario is “pulling the emergency brake” as its Premier phrased it, entering a limited lockdown for 28 days Saturday. It’s just short of a stay-at-home order. It’s their third lockdown since the pandemic began. The Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses called the lockdown “unconscionable.”

A study in Britain as reported by the BBC says only 18% of people who have symptoms ask for a Covid-19 test, and only 43% with symptoms properly self-isolate. Men, younger people, those with young children, and the working class were less likely to self-isolate.

It’s one of the most frustrating parts of the pandemic; hearing things from official sources then hearing that you didn’t hear what you heard. The CDC yesterday walked back controversial comments made by director Rochelle Walensky suggesting those who are vaccinated never get infected or transmit the virus to others. That goes against precautions the CDC has been urging vaccinated people to take; keep wearing masks and gather only in limited circumstances with the unvaccinated. The agency said, “Dr. Walensky spoke broadly. It is possible some people who are fully vaccinated could get COVID-19. The evidence isn’t clear whether they can spread the virus to others.”

In the United States cases were up 17%, deaths are down 26%, and hospitalizations down 2% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending up since March 23.

There are now 6,923,637 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, New York, Virginia, Florida, and Maryland.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Kingsbury, SD. Huron, MI. St. Clair, MI. Dimmit, TX. Sanilac, MI. Pitkin, CO. Macomb, MI. Lapeer, MI. Otsego, MI. And Missaukee, MI.

The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, New York, Michigan, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

There have been 553,120 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.82%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 137. Texas 136. New York 82. Florida 69. Georgia 64. Michigan 55. Massachusetts 32. New Jersey 30. And Pennsylvania and South Carolina 28.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, New Mexico at 38.1%, Connecticut at 35.4%, and South Dakota at 34.8%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Alabama at 23.6%, Georgia at 23.7%, and Mississippi at 24.7%.

Globally, cases were up 30% and deaths up 18% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending up since March 5.

There are now 22,434,053 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: Brazil 89,459. India 81,441. The United States 76,786. France 50,659. And Turkey 40,806.

There have now been 2,825,940 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for April 1st, 2021.

A batch of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine failed quality standards and is unusable. The company didn’t say how many doses were lost or how this might impact future deliveries. Turns out one of the factories that makes one of the ingredients didn’t meet standards and had not yet been approved by the FDA to make part of the vaccine.

While rumors float around the Internet that there were no more deaths in the U.S. in 2020 than usual, the government reports the pandemic pushed total U.S. deaths past 3.3 million, the nation’s highest annual death toll ever. The CDC says the coronavirus alone caused about 375,000 deaths and was the third leading cause of death last year.

France’s President called the variants of the coronavirus "an epidemic within the epidemic" and extended a lockdown to the entire country and closed schools through all of April. Gatherings inside and outside are banned, and no one can travel more than 6.2 miles from their homes. Hospitalizations are on track to surpass even the first deadly wave of last spring.

Pfizer says its vaccine is safe and strongly protective in kids as young as 12. Their vaccine is authorized for ages 16 and older, but vaccinating all ages is seen as critical to helping schools return to normal. Researchers reported levels of antibodies even somewhat higher than that seen in young adults.

Does the vaccine work? Well if it does, we’d see it first in the senior population prioritized for the vaccine. And the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living said yesterday nursing homes in the U.S. have seen a 96% decline in new cases since December 20. And COVID-related deaths declined 91%.

In the United States cases were up 20%, deaths are down 23%, and hospitalizations down 2% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending up since March 23.

There are now 6,927,626 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, New York, Virginia, Florida, and Maryland.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Dimmit, TX. Kingsbury, SD. St. Clair, MI. Huron, MI. Sanilac, MI. Lewis, MO. Otsego, MI. Pitkin, CO. Macomb, MI. And Lapeer, MI.

The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, New York, Michigan, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

There have been 552,038 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.82%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 149. Oklahoma 103. New York 87. Florida 84. New Jersey 75. Georgia 68. Pennsylvania 44. Illinois and Massachusetts 37. And West Virginia 36.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, New Mexico at 37.5%, Connecticut at 34.4%, and South Dakota at 34.3%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Alabama at 22.7%, Georgia at 23.1%, and Mississippi at 24.3%.

Globally, cases were up 32% and deaths up 16% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending up since March 5.

There are now 22,228,160 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: Brazil 89,200. India 72,182. The United States 68,756. France 41,907. And Turkey 39,302.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for March 31st, 2021.

Little doubt now the U.S. is getting hit with a fourth wave of COVID-19, but those showing up in hospitals look a lot different this time. It’s people under 60 accounting for most new cases. Health experts are saying that’s actually good news, as it shows the vaccines given to seniors are working. More than 73% of people 65+ has received at least one dose of vaccine, and nearly half are fully vaccinated.

We told you yesterday about the early release of the World Health Organization’s study with China practically absolving China of any negligent role in the outbreak. Now, the U.S. and 13 other countries say that report lacked access to complete data. One of the team’s investigators has admitted China refused to provide raw data on early COVID-19 cases.

A reporter in Brazil says, “We have people dying because of lack of oxygen, people are literally suffocating. There are no medications for intubation, there are no ICU beds. The situation is completely out of control.” Yesterday, Brazil registered a daily record of Covid deaths, more than 3,700.

On the flip side, what is England doing right? London recorded zero daily deaths from Covid-19 for the first time in over six months. The country as a whole recorded 19 deaths. This as England's "stay at home" order was lifted Monday and restrictions were eased.

In Concord, NC, a parent’s worst nightmare. An elementary school had 95 students quarantined after 17 kids tested positive in a surge of cases. The school will undergo a deep cleaning to be ready to open after spring break April 13.

In the United States cases were up 18%, deaths are down 29%, and hospitalizations down 4% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending up since March 22.

There are now 6,946,220 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, New York, Virginia, Florida, and Maryland.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Bacon, GA. Lewis, MO. Marion, MO. Dimmit, TX. Webster, NE. Hitchcock, NE. Kingsbury, SD. Shelby, MO. Big Horn, MT. And St. Clair, MI.

The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, and Connecticut.

There have been 550,952 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.82%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Texas 110. California 101. Florida 96. New Jersey 82. New York 60. Michigan 52. Pennsylvania 33. Tennessee 28. Georgia 25. And Arizona, Virginia, and Kentucky with 23.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, New Mexico at 37.5%, Connecticut 34.4%, and South Dakota at 34.3%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Alabama at 22.7%, Georgia at 23.1%, and Mississippi at 24.3%.

Globally, cases were up 32% and deaths up 14% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending up since March 5.

There are now 22,057,591 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: Brazil 86,704. The United States 62,459. India 53,158. Turkey 37,303. And France 30,702.

    Show notes

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for March 30th, 2021.

The World Health Organization and China did a study together that, according to an advance copy obtained by the Associated Press, says the virus originating from a leak at the lab in Wuhan is “extremely unlikely.” It concludes transmission happened from bats to humans through another animal, like a pangolin, mink, or cat.

The U.S. government now has data from real-world usage of COVID vaccines and their effectiveness was found to be nearly as robust as it was in controlled studies. Pfizer and Moderna — highly effective at 90% after two doses. In testing, the vaccines were about 95% effective. The data also shows the vaccines are 80% effective for two weeks or more after just one dose.

But the Director of the CDC apparently sees “impending doom.” Dr. Rochelle Walensky gave a dire press briefing yesterday in which she said, “I’m going to reflect on the recurring feeling I have of impending doom. Right now, I’m scared.” The country saw a 16% uptick of new cases per day over the prior week. Walensky says the trajectory of infections looks like what Europe saw a few weeks ago before experiencing significant surges.

Record daily case numbers, increasing variant cases, and signs of exponential growth led British Columbia to lock down yesterday until at least April 19. This as Canada suspends use of the AstraZeneca vaccine for people under 55 due to pervasive blood clotting concerns. It has yet to get emergency use authorization in the U.S., but the U.S. government was donating the AstraZeneca vaccine to Canada and Mexico. Canada’s facing a slow vaccine rollout, with only 1.8% of its population fully vaccinated.

Daily national surveys by Carnegie Mellon shows vaccine uptake has increased, but the proportion of adults reluctant to get it is unchanged. Concerns are especially high among females, Black and Hispanic adults, and those with certain health conditions. Overall vaccine hesitancy remains steady at 23%.

In the United States cases were up 15%, deaths are down 29%, and hospitalizations down 6% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending up since March 22.

There are now 6,961,375 active cases in the United States.

Big Horn, MT. Kingsbury, SD. Shelby, MO. And Huron, MI.

The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, New Jersey, Michigan, New York, and Connecticut.

There have been 549,892 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.82%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: New York 122. California 97. Florida and North Carolina 57. Georgia 36. Louisiana 35. Texas 32. Pennsylvania 22. Virginia 21. And Connecticut 18.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, New Mexico at 37.1%, South Dakota at 34%, and Connecticut at 33.7%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Georgia and Alabama at 22.6%, and Mississippi at 23.7%.

Globally, cases were up 30% and deaths up 12% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending up since March 5.

There are now 21,987,849 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: The United States 59,707. India 56,119. Brazil 42,666. Turkey 32,404. And Poland 16,965.

There have now been 2,790,109 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.

Mexico has published revised figures indicating the number of coronavirus deaths is 60% higher than previously reported. More than 321,000 people are now believed to have died there. And that puts Mexico at the second highest Covid-related deaths in the world, after the US. The miscount is being blamed on a likely lack of testing.

New York and New Jersey are back on top of the list of U.S. states with the highest rates of infection. New infections have gone up 37% in a little more than a month. However, neither state is experiencing anything like last spring when hospitals and morgues were overflowing.

Critical care doctors in Paris say surging infections will soon overwhelm their ability to care for the sick in hospitals. And that means possibly choosing which patients will get treated and saved. A group of doctors writing an opinion piece said, “We have never known such a situation, even during the worst (terror) attacks.”

New research shows the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are effective in pregnant and lactating women, who can pass protective antibodies on to their newborns. Additional research is needed to know how long those protective antibodies last in newborns. The researchers also found no evidence of more or more intense side effects in pregnant and lactating women than in the general population.

If the administrator of the medical center there is to be believed, an Amish community in New Holland Borough, Pennsylvania has become 'the first in the US to achieve herd immunity to COVID-19' after 90% of their households became infected after resuming church services late last spring. Public health officials and epidemiologists are not disputing the outbreak but are very reluctant to assign anything positive to the way this herd immunity was apparently achieved.

In the United States cases were up 12%, deaths are down 31%, and hospitalizations down 6% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending up since March 22.

California will start vaccinating anyone 16 and over in 3 weeks, joining an ever-growing list of states that are doing so. The state expects to get 2.5 million doses a week in the first half of the month and more than 3 million a week in the second. Alaska’s already vaccinating those 16 and over. Florida will open to 18+ April 5, and Texas will start inoculating all adults next week.

Hard to find any vaccination effort beating Israel’s. The country has now administered two doses of vaccine to more than half its population. Israel began easing a nationwide lockdown in late February and has seen an 85% drop in daily deaths, a 72% drop in the critically ill, and 86% fewer daily cases since mid-January.

The U.K. is extending coronavirus emergency measures for six months, allowing the government to maintain the ability to restrict citizens’ everyday lives. This includes the power to ban protests, shut down businesses, restrict travel, and detain people suspected of being infected.

Research shows rapid antigen tests on arrival after travel can be just as effective as a ten-day quarantine. Of course, that research was commissioned by several British airlines. Last year, Britain’s 10-day quarantine rules for arrivals from most countries hammered travel and stopped countless people from taking trips.

In a sign you might have to get the vaccine or quit college, Rutgers University will require students enrolling for the 2021 fall semester to prove they’ve been vaccinated for COVID. Rutgers is believed to be the first large university in the U.S., maybe the first college of any size, to require vaccines.

In the United States cases were flat, deaths are down 31%, and hospitalizations down 12% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since March 14.

There are now 7,018,080 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, New York, Florida, Virginia, and Georgia.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Webster, NE. Chattahoochee, GA. Dimmit, TX. Big Horn, MT. Bacon, GA. Huron, MI. Otsego, MI. Wexford, MI. Beaver, UT. And Sanilac, MI.

The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, New Jersey, Michigan, New York, and Delaware.

There have been 546,504 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.82%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 242. Texas 133. Florida 101. Georgia 91. New York 78. Michigan 54. Massachusetts 40. Pennsylvania and New Jersey 38. And Illinois 34.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel dropped plans for a 5-day shutdown over Easter, calling it a mistake and apologizing to citizens. The move came after a videoconference with Germany’s 16 state governors. The plan raised logistical and legal questions and was criticized for there being no public discussion of it before it emerged Tuesday.

On the flipside, Belgium is reintroducing a strict lockdown in response to a surge of new infections. Schools are closing and residents will have limited access to nonessential businesses. Confirmed new cases in Belgium increased 40% over the last week and hospital admissions rose 28% after a long period of stability.

Cuba will administer experimental vaccines to nearly the entire population of Havana by May in a massive study. Cuba’s in late phase trials of two of its five experimental shots, which will be Latin America’s first homegrown vaccines if testing is successful.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for March 24th, 2021.

AstraZeneca cannot seem to catch a break. U.S. health officials said the recently announced results from the company’s U.S. trial may have included "outdated information.” AstraZeneca reported its vaccine provided 79% protection among adults of all ages and no serious side effects, but the Data and Safety Monitoring Board said it’s concerned that represents an incomplete view of the efficacy data.

Brazil reported more than 3,000 COVID-19 deaths in one day for the first time yesterday. There are calls for the government and the new health minister to take action as the country becomes the pandemic’s global epicenter.

France will offer vaccine shots to anyone over 70 from this weekend. There’s a renewed sense of urgency as France and its EU neighbors are suffering a third wave. The head of France’s hospital federation said hospitals could face an “unprecedented shock” within 3 weeks.

A reminder the virus is cruel and undiscriminating. 20 patients and staffers in the cancer ward at Duke Raleigh Hospital tested positive in a coronavirus outbreak. So far it’s been contained to one fifth floor wing. Infected patients who continue to require hospitalization have been moved to the hospital's COVID-19 unit.

The travel industry is telling the U.S. government enough is enough. More than two dozen travel trade groups signed a letter that went to the White House saying it’s time for international travel restrictions to end. They want a “risk-based, data-driven roadmap” to cancel inbound international travel restrictions by May 1 and an end to mandatory quarantines but keeping the testing mandate.

In the United States cases were down 8%, deaths are down 35%, and hospitalizations down 17% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since March 14.

There are now 7,040,066 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, New York, Florida, Virginia, and Georgia.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Lyon, KY. Chattahoochee, GA. Huron, MI. Otsego, MI. Wexford, MI. Shawnee, KS. Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, AK. Missaukee, MI. Boone, NE. And Sanilac, MI.

The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, New Jersey, Michigan, New York, and Delaware.

There have been 543,798 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.83%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 198. Texas 79. New Jersey 61. Arizona 53. Florida 48. Ohio 42. Pennsylvania and Tennessee 34. Georgia 32. And New York, Massachusetts, and Mississippi 21.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, New Mexico at 33.3%, Alaska at 31.5%, and South Dakota at 30.4%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Georgia at 19.4%, Alabama at 19.8%, and Tennessee at 21.3%.

Globally, cases were up 25% and deaths up 3% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending up since March 5.

There are now 21,223,694 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: Brazil 84,996. The United States 58,705. India 47,264. Turkey 26,182. And Italy 18,765.

A late-stage U.S. study shows the PR plagued AstraZeneca vaccine provided 79% efficacy against disease and 100% protection against hospitalization and death across all age groups. The study, of course, was done by AstraZeneca, but the company said its experts also identified no safety concerns including blood clotting. AstraZeneca's vaccine has yet to be given the green light in the U.S.

New cases of COVID-19 in the United States rose 5% to more than 394,000 last week, the first increase after declining nine straight weeks, according to Reuters and CDC data. 30 out of 50 states reported more new infections in the week ended March 21 compared with the previous seven days, up from 19 states in the prior week.

Germany extended its lockdown measures by another month and imposed several new restrictions, including largely shutting down public life over Easter. If you need another incentive to get vaccinated, here’s a sweet one. Starting Monday and going to the end of this year, if you take your vaccination card to any Krispy Kreme in the US, you can get a free glazed doughnut. Not just once, but every day. Of course, it’s a treat, not exactly a health plan.

Germany’s Health Minister says vaccines will not arrive quickly enough to prevent a third wave of the pandemic. He said, new infections are rising at a "very clearly exponential rate and even if the deliveries from EU orders come reliably, it will still take a few weeks until the risk groups are fully vaccinated."

An Israeli-American pharmaceutical company is getting ready to launch a Phase I clinical trial for what could be the world’s first oral COVID-19 vaccine. The technology can be used to orally administer several protein-based therapies that’d otherwise be delivered by injection. The study also showed the Pfizer vaccine is 97% effective in preventing severe cases, hospitalizations, and death.

As predicted, Spring Break has become a bit of a problem. Miami Beach Police fired pepper balls into crowds of partiers and arrested at least a dozen Saturday. Officials say they are “out of control and more than we can handle.” A state of emergency has been set as well as an 8 p.m. curfew.
