Once the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States, New York City will "fully reopen" July 1. The Mayor said, "We are ready for stores to open, for businesses to open.” Theaters will also be operating at "full strength." It’s his belief vaccines are capable of quashing any outbreaks from new variants.

They aren’t as sure about that in the U.K. Things are going very well there but now variants first detected in India have become the second most dominant in just weeks. Public Health England said there’s no evidence of widespread transmission or that these variants cause more severe disease or render the vaccines any less effective. Other scientists are alarmed at how fast these cases appear to be increasing even with social-distancing restrictions still in place.

An unwelcome surprise in Vietnam. It’s detected its first locally transmitted cases in 35 days. Authorities have ordered tighter surveillance to prevent a new outbreak. That country’s strict quarantine and tracking helped it successfully contain three outbreaks so far and has one of the best records in Asia.

How many companies in the U.S. will require employees be vaccinated? A survey from the Rockefeller Foundation says most of them. 63% plan on requiring proof. As for consequences, 42% say the employee will not be allowed to return to the workplace, and 35% said discipline including termination is on the table.

The first study of NHS staff in England shows fully up to one fourth of healthcare workers there are still reluctant to get the vaccines. This is especially true among black and south Asian staffers, workers under 30, pregnant women, and those who already had Covid.

In the United States cases were down 27%, deaths are down 7%, and hospitalizations are down 3% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since April 14.

There are now 6,813,287 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, Virginia, New York, Maryland, and Florida.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Chattahoochee, GA. Huron, MI. Grant, OR. Muskegon, MI. Ferry, WA. Donley, TX. Hemphill, TX. Pecos, TX. Bent, CO. And Fluvanna, VA.

The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, Michigan, Minnesota, Colorado, and Delaware.

There have been 575,070 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.79%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Michigan 116. California 86. Texas and New York 68. Georgia 60. Florida 52. Pennsylvania 51. Illinois 41. And Arizona, South Carolina, and Colorado 23.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, New Hampshire at 59.8%, Massachusetts at 54.7%, and Connecticut at 53.9%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi at 30.7%, Alabama at 32%, and Louisiana at 32.1%.

Globally, cases were up 4% and deaths up 7% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since April 23.

There are 19,428,181 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: India 386,888. Brazil 69,079. The United States 59,269. Turkey 37,674. And France 26,538.

There have now been 3,161,637 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.

Coronavirus news, updates, hotspots and information for 4-29-2021 Apr 29, 2021
    Show notes

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for April 29th, 2021.

An EU agency says Russia is spreading fake news that the West and EU are trying to undermine their Sputnik V vaccine and trying to sow distrust in the European Medicines Agency. That agency regulates which vaccines can be put on the EU market. The European Commission so far doesn't intend to order Sputnik V, but Germany may talk to Russia about an individual order and Hungary’s already using it.

We’ve heard about the situation in India, but next door, in Pakistan, that country recorded more than 200 COVID-19 deaths in a day for the first time since the start of the pandemic. They are now considering stricter lockdowns because Pakistan has very limited health resources, with ventilators and oxygen in short supply.

Research is now underway at Oxford to come up with blood tests that will determine not only whether a vaccine will work but for how long. Volunteers who survived COVID are being deliberately exposed to gauge levels of protection against reinfection. They’re trying to learn how to tell if a new vaccine would provide protection without having to test it on tens of thousands of people.

A new study shows why you should not skip your second vaccine dose. In a "real-world" study, the effectiveness of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in keeping people out of the hospital was 94% for those fully vaccinated, but only 64% for those with one dose. As we reported here before, 8% of Americans are not returning for their second shot.

And from the utter silliness department, a conspiracy has been making the rounds that singer Mariah Carey faked getting her vaccine injection in a video. In the video, the needle cannot be seen coming out of her arm. The reason is the person giving the shot used a retractable needle. These are sometimes used to help protect health care workers by allowing an extra push on the plunger to retract the needle up into the syringe.

In the United States cases were down 26%, deaths are down 7%, and hospitalizations are down 2% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since April 14.

There are now 6,810,611 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, Virginia, New York, Maryland, and Florida.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Chattahoochee, GA. Pecos, TX. Huron, MI. Hemphill, TX. Muskegon, MI. Grant, OR. Coos, NH. Ferry, WA. Fairbanks North Star Borough, AK. And Coosa, AL.

The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, Michigan, Colorado, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania.

There have been 574,326 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.79%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Texas 75. Florida 74. Oklahoma 72. Georgia 71. Pennsylvania 65. California 62. New Jersey 49. Illinois, Michigan, and South Carolina 37.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, New Hampshire at 59.7%, Massachusetts at 54.1%, and Connecticut at 53.5%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi at 30.6%, Alabama at 31.8%, and Louisiana at 32%.

Globally, cases were up 5% and deaths up 4% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since April 23.

There are 19,316,514 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: India 379,459. Brazil 77,266. The United States 56,604. Turkey 40,444. And France 31,539.

There have now been 3,146,284 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for April 28th, 2021.

India has reported more than 17.6 million cases since the pandemic began last year. But experts fear the actual number could be 30x higher. That means more than half a billion cases. Health workers and scientists have long warned infections and deaths are greatly underreported for a variety of reasons. Some predictions have the death toll peaking at more than 13,000 a day — more than 4x the current daily death toll.

As expected, the CDC eased guidelines in the U.S. on wearing masks outdoors. Fully vaccinated Americans don't need to cover their faces anymore unless they are in a big crowd of strangers. The unvaccinated can also go outside without masks in some situations. It was essentially an endorsement what many Americans were already doing.

Brazil's health regulator rejected several states’ requests to import almost 30 million doses of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine out of safety concerns, and the Russian government is not happy. The agency said there were faults in all clinical studies of the vaccine’s development, as well as absent or insufficient data.

Pfizer’s CEO said that before the end of this year, they may release a pill that can treat early-stage COVID-19 infections at home. It would work by inhibiting the enzyme the virus needs to infiltrate human cells. Of course, it all depends on clinical trials and the FDA.

West Virginia’s trying to climb up the ranks of our top vaccinating states report by paying young people to get the vaccine. $100 savings bond for anyone age 16 to 35 who gets vaccinated. The Governor said, "I'm trying to come up with a way that's truly going to motivate them to get over the hump." Even those who’ve already gotten the shots will get paid retroactively.

In the United States cases were down 24%, deaths are down 5%, and hospitalizations are flat over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since April 14.

There are now 6,817,794 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, Virginia, New York, Maryland, and Florida.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Dimmit, TX. Chattahoochee, GA. Grant, OR. Caroline, VA. Pecos, TX. Hemphill, TX. Ferry, WA. Coos, NH. Muskegon, MI. And Huron, MI.

The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.

There have been 573,355 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.79%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Michigan 117. New York 116. Pennsylvania 77. New Jersey 61. Texas 60. Florida 58. Illinois 24. California and North Carolina 23. And Georgia, Virginia, and Maryland 18.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, New Hampshire at 59.5%, Massachusetts at 53.6%, and Connecticut at 53.2%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi at 30.2%, Alabama at 31.6%, and Louisiana at 31.9%.

Globally, cases were up 6% and deaths down 2% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since April 23.

There are 19,197,940 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: India 362,902. Brazil 76,085. The United States 52,046. Turkey 43,301. And France 30,317.

Coronavirus news, updates, hotspots and information for 4-27-2021 Apr 27, 2021
    Show notes

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for April 27th, 2021.

The President of the United States is expected to announce changes today to the CDC’s guidance and recommendations regarding outdoor masks. Dr. Anthony Fauci indicated over the weekend the changes will apply to what vaccinated people can do, with some changes also even for unvaccinated people.

The U.S. will start sharing its stock of AstraZeneca vaccines with the world, but first it has to clear America’s FDA. That could mean as many as 60 million doses being exported in the coming months. The U.S. has been under mounting pressure to give the vaccine it purchased to countries like India.

It doesn’t look like Israel needs help. The country leads the race to vaccinate citizens before variants can take hold by far, and it’s working. There were zero Covid-19 deaths last Thursday and new infections are plummeting. Citizens no longer have to wear masks outdoors, they can dine at indoor restaurants, attend concerts, and go to school in person.

Italy’s trying to get there. There was a gradual reopening yesterday, but few people seem happy about it. Some say it’s too cautious, others say it’s too hasty. The 10pm curfew remains, preventing theater reopenings. But some virologists say the virus does not negotiate and the tentative reopening could usher in a new surge.

Health insurers seem ready to roll back consumer-friendly changes that were made early in the pandemic. Many had been waiving all deductibles, copayments and other costs for insured patients who got COVID-19. Now, a number of insurers are quietly ending those waivers. So, COVID patients can no longer assume they won’t have to pay deductibles, copayments and coinsurance.

In the United States cases were down 16%, deaths are down 3%, and hospitalizations were up 5% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since April 14.

There are now 6,812,645 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, Virginia, New York, Maryland, and Florida.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Caroline, VA. Chattahoochee, GA. Grant, OR. Pecos, TX. Dimmit, TX. Hemphill, TX. Coos, NH. Huron, MI. Ferry, WA. And Coosa, AL.

The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, Michigan, Colorado, New Jersey, and Delaware.

There have been 572,652 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.79%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Florida 62. New York 38. Michigan and North Carolina 37. Georgia 34. California 22. Washington 21. And New Jersey, Colorado, and Connecticut 19.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, New Hampshire at 59.4%, Massachusetts at 53.1%, and Connecticut at 52.7%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi at 30.2%, Alabama at 31.5%, and Louisiana at 31.8%.

Globally, cases were up 13% and deaths up 3% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since April 23.

There are 19,245,933 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: India 319,435. The United States 47,456. Turkey 37,312. Brazil 29,669. And Iran 21,026.

There have now been 3,116,582 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.

India set a world record for the fourth day in a row for daily infections. Also new daily death tolls for nine consecutive days. The United States said it will help India in its time of need, but there were no specifics given. It’s anticipated that will include shipments of drug treatments, rapid diagnostic testing kits, ventilators, PPE, and oxygen.

A nightmare in Baghdad, Iraq. At least 82 people were killed when a fire swept through a hospital where Covid-19 patients were being treated. Many of them were bedridden and on ventilators. 110 additional people were injured. The fire was reportedly caused by an exploding oxygen tank.

Why would someone get the first dose of vaccine, but then refuse to get the second? According to the CDC, that’s what millions of Americans are doing. Nearly 8% have missed their follow-up appointments. As for possible reasons, some say they don’t want the potential side effects, some think one dose will be enough, and others blame lack of supply…even though that’s a problem that is just no longer present.

A slight ray of hope for the international travel industry. The President of the European Commission said vaccinated Americans will be allowed into EU countries starting this summer. What’s unclear is how proof of vaccination will be handled. Some member countries like Greece were already opening up to vaccinated tourists on their own.

The President of NASCAR says it’s considering requiring competitors be vaccinated in order to compete. Some drivers, including current NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott said, that decision is a personal choice. NASCAR was one of the first sports to resume competition after the shutdown, did not do any Covid-19 testing, and reported no widespread outbreaks.

In the United States cases were down 16%, deaths are down 3%, and hospitalizations were up 5% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since April 14.

There are now 6,858,406 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, Virginia, New York, Maryland, and Florida.

There have been 572,199 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.79%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: New York 43. California 38. Florida 34. Illinois 25. Texas, Virginia, and South Carolina 16. New Jersey, Maryland, and Kentucky 13.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, New Hampshire at 59.2%, Massachusetts at 52.3%, and Connecticut at 52.1%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi at 30.2%, Alabama at 31.5%, and Louisiana at 31.7%.

Globally, cases were up 15% and deaths up 4% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since April 23.

There are now over 19 million active cases around the world, at 19,339,968.

The five countries with the most new cases: India 354,531. Turkey 38,553. The United States 34,736. Brazil 32,572. And France 24,465.

    Show notes

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for April 23rd, 2021.

Vaccines are now available to all US adults. But vaccinations are declining. Counties across the country have begun turning down shipments of doses. 34% of U.S. adults have been fully vaccinated. A recent Kaiser Family Foundation survey showed 20% said they definitely wouldn’t get a vaccine or only get one if it was required. An additional 17% are in "wait and see" mode.

The CDC is said to be thinking about changing its recommendations about mask usage outdoors. Many states are already moving ahead with looser restrictions. Some health experts say there's very little transmission outdoors, except in particularly crowded circumstances. In fact, researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found less than 10% of transmission occurs outdoors.

Disturbing news out of Michigan; there’s been a record-breaking spike in child hospitalizations, hitting a high of 70 this week. That’s twice the number during the worst days of the wave in November. As of April 17, the 10-19 age group had Michigan's highest rate of new cases. For kids under 10, the average was 400 new cases per day.

On the other end of the spectrum, nationwide, hospitalizations among older Americans have plunged more than 70% since the beginning of the year. Deaths have dropped as well. Since seniors were given priority with the vaccines, it offers dramatic evidence vaccinations are working.

The EU is fighting mad when it comes to the AstraZeneca vaccine. It’s asked member countries to back legal action against the company by the end of the week for allegedly violating its contractual obligations to supply vaccine. Opponents of that move worry this will only further undermine confidence in the vaccine.

In the United States cases were down 7%, deaths are down 2%, and hospitalizations were up 7% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since April 14.

There are now 6,848,237 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, New York, Virginia, Maryland, and Florida.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Dimmit, TX. Caroline, VA. Grant, OR. Coos, NH. St. Clair, MI. Newaygo, MI. Ferry, WA. Grayson, VA. Cheboygan, MI. And Macomb, MI.

The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, Michigan, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.

There have been 570,312 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.8%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Michigan 121. California 92. Florida 86. Texas and New York 68. Pennsylvania 56. Georgia 46. Illinois 38. New Jersey 30. And North Carolina 25.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, New Hampshire at 58.8%, Connecticut at 50.3%, and Maine and Massachusetts at 50%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi at 29.7%, Alabama at 30.7%, and Louisiana at 31.2%.

Globally, cases were up 18% and deaths up 6% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since April 21.

There are now 18,928,051 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: India 332,503. The United States 67,070. Turkey 54,791. Brazil 49,344. And France 34,318.

The FDA said that factory in Baltimore hired to help make Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine was dirty, didn’t follow proper procedures and had poorly trained staff. That is likely what resulted in contamination of material going into a batch of shots. That batch, enough to make about 15 million doses, had to be thrown out.

The World Health Organization said infections have been rising at an alarming rate for eight straight weeks as the virus sweeps easily through several parts of the world. More than 5.2 million new cases last week - the most in one week since the pandemic began. Deaths also increased for the fifth week.

A new directive is requiring hospitals in Ontario, Canada to stop all non-emergency surgeries and non-urgent procedures immediately. This as COVID-19 patients continue to fill hospitals and put the healthcare system under strain amid a third coronavirus wave. The province is also giving hospitals the authority to transfer patients to other hospitals without their consent.

A growing number of a certain group feels like the pandemic is being blown out of proportion. But it might not be a group you’d expect. It’s educators. Education Week reports nearly one in three surveyed said it’s not a real threat to schools. 15% also said no social distancing at all is necessary.

COVID-19 has reportedly claimed the life of a former member of the legendary Four Seasons music group. Joe Long is actually the second member of the group to die from COVID. Tommy DeVito lost his life last year. Frankie Valli announced Long’s death on his Facebook page.

In the United States cases were flat, deaths are down 8%, and hospitalizations were up 9% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since April 14.

In India’s capital, patients struggle to breathe for up to 10 hours as ambulances try to find an open bed at one of the six hospitals there. For others, there’s no available ambulance at all. Nearly all ventilators are in use as India recorded over 250,000 new infections and over 1,700 deaths in 24 hours. The U.K. announced a travel ban on most visitors from India and Canada is considering the same.

The European Union says yes, it found a “possible link” between Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine and blood clots, but the benefits outweigh the risks. They recommended a warning be added to the label, which the drug company said it will do.

The U.S. administration has issued guidelines for federal agencies to test workers for COVID-19, confirming these offices can mandate employee testing. The CDC said, federal employees who have a testing requirement to enter their workplace and refuse can face “consequences.” It did not specify what those consequences might be. It did say the Americans with Disabilities Act allows for it and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has deemed it acceptable.

There’s a kind of tourism to the United States that’s doing quite well, vaccine tourism by wealthy people from Latin America. Politicians, TV personalities, business executives and a soccer team charter planes, book commercial flights, buy bus tickets and rent cars to get the vaccine in U.S. due to lack of supply at home. Some say they don’t feel guilty because it’s starting to appear Americans don’t seem to want the vaccines.

Today’s celebrity infection is rock star Ted Nugent, notable for dismissing COVID-19 just four months ago as a “scamming pandemic” and committing to never taking the vaccine. Now the 72-year-old reported to fans he thought he was dying and can hardly crawl out of bed.

In India, New Delhi imposed a weeklong lockdown to prevent the total collapse of that city's health system. Ambulances roam the streets looking for a hospital with empty beds, patients line up at medical facilities, and ambulances each carrying half a dozen bodies idle outside crematoriums. The virus is spreading at a rate faster than at any other time there.

At a White House Covid-19 task force briefing, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky reported the current 7-day case average is up to over 67,440 per day and the 7-day average of daily deaths is up to about 695 deaths per day. She’s confident the vaccines are effective, but said they take time to kick in, around 2-6 weeks, so prevention measures must stay in place.

Oregon is receptive to that message. Health officials there are considering mandating masks and social distancing in all businesses indefinitely. Many businesses and residents are fuming, with 60,000 signing a petition against the measure. But proponents say it’s necessary because state law requires a "permanent" rule to keep current restrictions from expiring.

The United States remains committed to the idea that banning travel is a major part of ending Covid-19. The State Department said it’s going to boost its “Do Not Travel” guidance to about 80% of countries around the world. It’ll be a significant increase in the number of countries at the Level 4: Do Not Travel designation.

As an indicator we’re at the stage where everyone is free to get a vaccine, a defense official says prisoners at Guantanamo can now start getting them. They actually were at the relative top of the list until many expressed outrage that they were prioritized for eligibility over many demographics of Americans. There are actually only 40 men being held there.

In the United States cases were up 4%, deaths are down 5%, and hospitalizations were up 10% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since April 14.

The global death toll from the coronavirus topped 3 million people Saturday. This as vaccination campaign have experienced setbacks and infections rage in countries like Brazil, India, and France. And the actual number of deaths is believed to be much higher because some governments have concealed statistics.

After initial concerns about supply and a rush to get appointments and vaccines, desire to get the vaccine appears to have plateaued. Appointments are getting skipped and officials are struggling to get appointments filled…even in very hard hit states like Michigan. Mass vaccination sites have started closing. Pharmacies in one part of Louisiana say vaccine demand has "completely fallen off."

One cause for reluctance making its way around the Internet rumor mill is that the vaccine somehow affects fertility. OB/GYN’s are getting questions about it and most point out that all the major medical societies, including the Society for Fertility, have come out and said there is no evidence to support fertility problems with the vaccines. Not only that, research has shown the presence of antibodies in umbilical cord blood and breast milk that get passed on to the baby.

Chile is not having a lot of luck with the Chinese Sinovac vaccine. That country has mounted one of the world’s most rapid vaccination campaigns using the Chinese vaccine, but health authorities are scrambling to deal with a surge of new infections and deaths. Half the adult population has already gotten at least one dose and officials say the level of protection after just one dose is being overestimated and restrictions eased too soon.

Otters at The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta have tested positive for Covid-19. They’re expected to make a full recovery, but it does point to how easy it is to be exposed to the coronavirus. These are animals traditionally kept in an enclosure and away from the public. However, they began sneezing and have symptoms like runny noses, tiredness, and coughing.
